any part of zermatt is good to stay in it's not that big and there are electro-busses to take you round. Try to stay close to the bahnhofstrasse or the river.
You cannot ski on the Matterhorn it's a solid piece of rock. You can ski on the foot of the Matterhorn, kind of.

hahahaha you cant ski the matterhorn but it's cool to look at.
the town is absolutely sick though, it's really small so there aren't any bad place to stay geographically speaking.
i stayed at a little motel run by an old lady last time and it was super fun, can't remember what it's called though.
