need game play ideas

a really cool company that builds amazing flash games has offered to build me a ski game for jibij.com. i want to do this right the first time. you guys use the web and know the sport, so this seems like the best place to get concepts started. first meeting to layout game play will probably be next week. any ideas are appreciated... big or small.

it cant be like 1 jump its gotta be a whole park..good graphics..good ski details from, line salomon head fischer elan kneissel rossi dynastar atomic and anyone else....diff riders...diff mountains...diff jumps rails..maybe this was too big..

Make sure you can do flips, spins, grabs, spins with flips, flips with spins. Have a slopestyle course.

Yeah slopestyle would be sweet because it could incorporate all the newschool skiing elements, maybe like a couple tables, couple rails, big air jump. Maybe a halfpipe run too where you actually go down the pipe unlike flashkicks version. I think gameplay should come before graphics, but graphics are a nice bonus too. I would use DNA Spin as a standard, to make a super sweet game!

obviously it can't be on the level of mad trix (not that that's neccessarily a good thing), but just make sure it takes some skill and has points so there's an excuse to play it 500 times a day

 
It has to be slope style for sure...and make it better than dna spin cause that game isnt to great...make rails and jumps and shit...make it cooll///

i understand dna spin doesn't exist anymore. anybody got screenshots or anything?

also... there's a plan to have a realtime leaderboard and give away shwag every month to the top player or randomly draw a name from the top spots.

www.dnafinland.fi/freestyle has some screen shots, yeah make it like a sopestyle competition with a high score option, have rooms to play it in and it could be like X games format with different player going one at a time and the best runs wins. That would be soooooooo sweet. Right on dude, keep us posted.

You need to by a cellphone plan or something with the company to play the game. Only subscribers have access to it. I wish I lived in finland and had a cell phone, b/c I would be playing it right now!

make sure the game has good wipeouts... It makes the game sooo much more amusing. like the crashes in motionplayground.com Yeah, try and use accurate physics too.

 
and make it so that off axis spins actually count...in dna spin if you did a d-spin 1260 it would count as like a 540 becuase you could only spin straight, or flip to get points, if you do a combo, the comp doesnt know what to do and waits for you to get back on axis before counting spins (if that made any sense)

 
make sure the tricks arent impossible like a quad lincon loop or a misty5800. Its gotta be like actual tricks that people can do. Also try to make it continous and be able to work ur way up in the industry and get sponsors. Anotehr idea would be to moe actual slope style courses of the mountains and make those.

i dont think it's gonna have multiple riders/skis...becuase that's not the point of it...it should have decent graphics, and as many tricks as possible

yea seriously its not going to be like some elaborate thing with 15 skiers and all the sponsors and carreer modes...i just say that they should focus on making a slopestyle course with a couple of hits and realistic tricks with smooth controls

alright my bad on the whole going over board thing - so just try to make as many tricks as possible and try to tweak them out really good

 
Check out motionplayground.com it has realistic physics engine and ok grafics. But if you make a game like this one, make it easier to land.

DNA Spin was a side scroller. You had a 3D model of a skier placed on top of a 2D background of a ski hill. There was just an invisible wall thing in front of the picture to act as the ground/collision.

You skied down a ramp holding down the spacebar and various arrow keys. Left and right made you spin, up and down made you flip. Little bars showed how much spin and flip 'energy' you had. You'd realease the bar at the lip of the jump and the skier would do the flippy spinny thing. z, x, c, v were grabs. Hopefully you would land upright, and have enough speed for the quarter pipe at the bottom. Same flippy-spinny rules apply there.

What DNA Spin did right:

-Graphics - bright, 3D, cartoony, lots'a blue.

-Side view (tricks look cooler, easier to time flips so you land upright, easier to make for the developer then a full 3D game)

-FUN!

-Landing off balance slowed you down

What DNA did wrong/you need to do:

-Make the physics realistic. You could flip and spin on flat ground in DNA, not good.

-Holding grabs = more points. DNA spin gave you the same points whether you did the grab for a split second or 2 seconds. Bad!

-Count flips and spins seperately - One couldn't do Misties or Rodeos in DNA - a flip with a spin was just scored as a flip. If the player spins 3x and does a front flip, its a Misty 1080!

-Bigger - usually the jump in DNA spin landed you right at the bottom of the quarter pipe, and you wouldn't have enough speed to get up the wall. Even if you just do a 2 element park (1 jump, 1 qp), make sure both elements can be used well.

-Make sure there is room for the player to turn around 180 for switch tricks before each jump/rail/qp. Obviously switch tricks = more points, but don't want everyone ALWAYS doing switch tricks, so maybe popping a jump switch gives you less air.

Other stuff:

-High scores list!!!

-No music - someone will always hate it, no matter what you choose.

-If you can't get good sound effects, don't use any. Otherwise it just becomes annoying and I'll turn off my speakers.

-Don't bother with different skis and sponsers and companies and gear - just takes more time.

-Gameplay is ALWAYS more important then graphics. Just make sure graphics get the message across that I did 720 with a Mute grab in the last 360 degrees of the spin.

-If a flip with lots of spin energy is a rodeo/misty, then a spin with a little flip energy should be an off axis spin - make sure thats worth extra points over a normal spin!. A jump with equal amounts of flip and spin energy should something special... lincoln loop maybe.

-Doing a trick once = 100% points. Second time the same trick is done = 75% points, third time = 50% points and so on. Don't let doing the highest scoring trick over and over again be the only way to win.

lets see..

www.newgrounds.com, on the main page check out roof top skating. it allows you to create your own character modle and stuff, it's pretty cool. the animation and tricks in that certain game are horrible, though. the graphics are stupid, the characters look awful, but the intire design your own person before you hit the run or whatever.

side scroller, whatever you want. just make the keys easy to controll. don't do the dna controlls, those where boring, let the skier be able to steer down the run. i don't want to have to follow a certian line, i want to mix it up. maybe hit a rail instead of a kicker or something.

my trick opinions:

-biggest spin, 1440.

-most flips (front, back) 3.

-speacil combinations for d-spins, misties, rodeos, crucials, ect.

-have around five grabs, cool ones. toxic, critials, mike nick luikangs, mutes..

-for a speacil flip or something, a secret combo.

-riding switch is a MUST.

so far, what is the game most likely gonan be like, give us an idea so we dont over expect somethig and when its not that we get pissed. SO far what do the people making the game think its gonna be like?

Everything's in the very early stages still. No game play has been determined yet. I'm laying out ideas (a lot of which came from right here) and we're going to bounce them around to figure out what's doable and what isn't.

It should be a cool game because these guys are hella talented. But, you're right, nobody should be expecting an online game to even come close to a PS2 or XBox style game. I'm just hoping we can push the limits of Flash a little and do something cool and a little different.

Most importantly, I want it to be something that jibbers will waste tons of time playing. :)
