Need advice: upgrading my Subaru Outback

I've owned a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback for a few months now and I'm interested in tinkering around with it and making some performance upgrades. Right now it has really sluggish acceleration (0-60 in 13 seconds) and a top speed around 120 mph, but corners really well. Where would be a sensible, financially sensitive place to start to get a bit more vvvrrrooom out of it? I think I'd like to improve the acceleration most of all, if that's possible. I drive off road almost as often as on road, and I have no interest in cosmetic changes. I also don't know a whole lot about cars so bear with me if I ask stupid questions.

I want to upgrade THIS car, not buy a more expensive one. I've already put my favorite bumper stickers on it, so I am fully committed.

I had the same outback for a few years. Things I would recommend are:

- Get a tune up.

- Don't even bother trying to get more power. The cost is way more than it's worth.

- Put your money into things that will make it a better car. New tires, new brakes, new struts, fix all the scratches and dents, clean the interior (and keep it clean), put some big lights on a lightbar if you're into that kind of thing, upgrade the speakers and stereo, the list goes on and on.

Throw in a Cold Air Intake, basic computer chip upgrade, new throttle body, new spark plugs/wires, have engine sea foamed through vacuum lines, sea foam oil ~500mi before changing it, and maybe new exhaust if you wanted to go all out (not worth the $$$, imo). Upgrading the motor mounts may also help, as vibrations in old mounts may cause power loss.
