hey,

Im headed to jackson hole for spring break and i wanna do some hikes to ski some more challenging stuff. i did a few hikes while i was in breckenridge last year and they were ridiculously short so a backpack would have been stupid. but i know jackson is bigger so would a backpack to carry some skis make my life easier? or really doesnt matter?

either way it doesnt matter, im not to worried about buying one since im pretty sure itll get alot of use over the years.

Thanks,

matt

you know what would be a lot better?

stand under a very unstable zone at jackson, ofcourse with a backpack on, and have a buddy stand on top and let off a charge

dont go backcountry unless you know what your doing.

quoted for truth

In fact if you do not know what you are doing do not go to Jackson Hole. Gapers not welcome.

what was that all about?^ he might know what hes doing, and he never even said he was hiking backcountry. i agree that jackson has been getting so much snow and its really unstable-i was there thursday and friday and saturday- but theres even stuff in bounds you hike to like headwall and casper bowl and crags (although i guess thats not to far of a hike...)

but to answer your question i dont know to much about backpacks but i dont think you can go wrong with a dakine helipro... i used the 20l at jackson for a day or two this past week, got plenty of room for avy gear, diagonal carry, etc... again i dont know that much about packs but the helipro has worked great for me.

and jacksons pretty insane its gotten so much snow we had a pow day like every day we were there. we even skied rock springs with a bunch of guys through the lower gate, it was kinda sketchy but as long as you know what youre doing the avy danger isnt that bad.

there will be plenty of untarcked pwoder, traverse over but try to stay on the trails, its not also worth it unless your a trained proffesionals

dont bother unless you have a beeper shovel and probe too and know how the fuck to use them

just dont be a dumbshit and you'll have a sick time

fyi: jackson will make breck look like a foothill

if you dont know your way around you will get screwed and jackson wil fuck u up just like the old tram sign said lol

but the bca stash is a great pack fro jackson as well as the heli pro

ha i can see this becoming a howto get to chads thread.

everyone bitching this guy out then he releases a video of him on the spoon couloir.

but yea i did two seasons dish pigging at jackson before i went out into the serious backcountry. dont go unless your prepared and have some there who knows what there are doing and where they are going.

dakine heli pro is the way to go. lots of space comftable pretty easy ski carry.

have fun though its a cool place to ski.

i know you've gotten alot of shit from this thread about not going into the bc without knowledge, which is a must, but in response to your question about what kind of pack, none, the only things i could imagine you hiking in jackson would be the headwall and casper bowl, both of which are short hikes ~30 minutes and its easy enough to throw your skis over you're sholder. But really, jackson has gotten so much snow this year you will have so much fun without hiking, hobbacks are a must, expert chutes, saratoga bowl is always good if shit starts to get tracked out over by sublette and thunder, but the way its looking you wont have to worry about that. So pretty much, wake up early, get in the gondy line and lap thunder and sublette the hole day, i know over break the gondy line can be rediculous and its really not worth it to come down from the top,

you dont need a pack in jackson to do about 95% of the inbounds stuff, if not 100%. they patrol well and as long as you're not dumb, you wont get caught in anything serious in the resort. that being said, be careful, its pretty hairy out there.

sorry kinda just glazed over that. for going BC bring a pack, but make sure you have someone who knows the area with you. but for inbounds dont bother, the hikes are manageable. the headwall has some sick stuff off it but the hike isn't too bad, just carry your skis. i would say that the inbounds has so much good stuff that its not really necesary to go out, unless it gets super tracked out or youre going to be at jackson for a while. i brought my pack this year but didnt use it, but you probably should get one just incase you do go out of bounds

Like everyone said don't go BC unless you know what your doing. i know someone who died on cody peak a while ago. but as far as your question goes, i was in jackson in february and im going back next week. i skied w/ a backpack (dakine heli) and i used it several times while hiking the headwall and the crags. it was a big help w/ the diagonal ski carry, but not essential at all. its also great to carry water or an ipod if yous ski w/ one. basically its great as far as convienience goes, but not a must.

There is a lot of the out of bounds skiing at Jackson that doesn't require much hiking at all. The only one that I would suggest is Casper/Craigs, because you can't get lost there because it is still in bounds, and used a lot, so you can see the trail to walk up there. You really can't just go out to teh back country at Jackson, unless you have someone else there who knows where to go, or else you will be at the top od a 200 foot granite cliff that you can't tell is there. Even if you just go off of Sublette gates, you can get to some good stuff that only has a short walk out that wouldn't need a pack.

Heli Pro is money. I use it for ridge hikes at bridger. All inbounds so I don't need a lot of gear carrying ability. I can carry my skis and a bladder, some extra goggles and gloves. I usually tie my jacket around my skis, but when I get to the top, the pack is still big enough to carry my jacket while I ski. If you're doing some all day BC stuff go for a bigger pack. Cramming trekkers, skins, snacks, etc would be a bit of a stretch for that lil' guy.
