NBA owner is a rampant racist, how should the players respond?

It blows my mind that so many of you are willing to degrade freedom of speech over a lousy situation like this.

Nobody is degrading free speech. He said what he said, which is perfectly within his rights, and now the league is speaking out against him, and punishing him for it, which is perfectly within their rights.

For some reason a lot of people seem to think that free speech means you can run around willy nilly shouting any stupid ass thing you want without having to fear any kind of retribution whatsoever. There seems to be a belief that freedom of speech means being able to shout any horrible thing, and if anybody speaks out against the person, they are restricting their freedom. He's not being punished for speaking, he's being punished for what he said. There's a difference.

I fully understand they have the grounds to do what they want with him, but what I am trying to say is that just because they can, does not mean its justified.

What he said was bogus. Especially considering the mix race of his gf and composition of the team. I can fully stand behind the fact that they want to ban him from the NBA for the poor portrayal of the sport that became public because of him. My only argument is that I believe the fine is unreasonable and should be challenged in court. To say "fuck off but pay us first" to me says "we want nothing to do with you. But your money? Yea.. we like that"

So if he does manage to sell, he's looking at somewhere around $540M profit, conservatively of course...

$540m in profit for the sale of a group of fit and capable black men...

Just saying...

Why isn't it justified? He basically called black people scum who he can't even bear to be seen taking pictures with in fear that people think he associates with them, yet he owns a team full of blacks who make him millions of dollars. Punishment seems fair to me.

lol 2.5 mill to someone who owns an nba team hes has 2 billion that's like 2% of his money, You have any idea how much money Mark Cuban pays per year in fines to the NBA, and how much money the NBA has made him over the years. I'm sure when you sign a paper to get a team, there's some sort of morality clause in the contract he signed.

I hate this argument so much. Its like the 30th time I've heard it today...

2.5 Million USD is 2.5 Million USD. I dont care if you're Bill Gates or a Homeless guy under a bridge. Just because you have made $X.XX during your life time, $1 is still $1.

Some guy on facebook today said "I read on twitter that $2.5 million to him is like $8 to the average american"

Are you kidding me?

A rich man will not be a rich man for long with that mentality.

^This shits funny, but also propagating more false information.

He didnt say he didnt want black people attending the game. He asked his gf to not attend games with minorities because he was getting calls from someone or some people ripping on him for it. Obviously thats fucked up, but a lot of people are crying wolf rn

i don't know how i feel about this punishment. it'd be different if he made racist statements to the news media, via social networking, etc., but he didn't. he made them in private conversation with his significant other and someone else decided to make that shit public.

They team could get rid of Sterling, that's the point you and Watts are missing. All they have to do is throw the playoffs, collectively, and he'll be gone. But they're not willing to do it. So if Sterlings own, current team, or the people most directly affected by his comments, won't do anything major, then I can assure you no one else will either.

You're very idealistic. This will blow over long before anything major will happen, guaranteed.

first off, youre telling me if they suck the owner will sell the team? The same owner that already owned them when they were the consensus worst franchise in American sports? How in the shit would that happen.

Next, youre already being proved wrong. Don't talk NBA if you don't know what youre talking about.

Ya people are too fucking soft. I only listened to the first few minutes of the tape but he never even said condescending things about black people, and there was no use of the "n" word or anything. What he said is hardly even racist, and i'd argue not even racist at all. People are making this a way bigger deal than it should be.

The thing that bothers me the most about this is the fact that TMZ is the source of the tape, they literally took everything he said out of context (as they do with all the shit they put out), I actually doubt he said anything that was directly racist.

Yup. Instead of focusing on the decades of bad shit he's done to realize he's a terrible human being, dumb fuck people have to listen to a 30 second PRIVATE conversation in the mans own house to get all outraged.

Sterling is a bad person, but the fact that this one thing is what people choose to focus on is asinine

Either way he is going to royally fuck the girlfriend that recorded then sold the recording to TMZ for illegally taping a private conversation. You can bet your ass she won't have a cent to her name for hte rest of her life.

ps, rule number 1 with white people is don't make them feel awkward about they're ancestors or the fact that they hold a more favorable position in our society,

if too many people started talking about it something might change.

Clearly made a big mistake rating you 10/10. That has been rectified.

Your argument here is truly fucked. Should we blame all Germans today for what the Nazis did? Should we blame all Spaniards today for the Inquisition? Should we blame everyone from England for the Crusades? Should we automatically blame every Muslim person today for the attacks on 911? Blaming modern generations for the faults of their ancestors will do nothing but create a more divisive and violent society.

You might have to dumb it down a little bit... i don't think he'll get any of those references

Sterling absolutely is racist. And the things he said on that tape are absolutely racist.

The reason so many of you seem to be missing it is, I think, because Sterling is a very old school racist. His racism has been ingrained in him from the time he was a boy growing up in the 30's. I listened to the whole tape and the way I interpreted it was that Sterling has nothing against black people, he doesn't consciously hate them or anything like that, hence the reason he doesn't care if this girl fucks them, but he believes, on a very basic, fundamental level, that blacks are inferior to whites. He didn't want this girl to be seen in public with blacks or taking pictures with them and putting them on the internet because he thinks that people seeing pictures of someone he is closely associated with with a black person will rub off negatively on him, and make him seem weak, or less powerful, because he is associating with an inferior race.

At least he tells it like it is, no bullshitting with him haha.

I think if they vote the dude out, he may come out with a shitload of dirt on the other owners... I know I would if I were him.

Probably an unpopular opinion but i honestly think everyone over reacted to this

I could agree. I don't think he really said anything wrong. He was honest, not racist in what he said about the hoodie or tatted up guy.

What a man's opinion on race is within the confines of his own home does not warrant him to get banned from the NBA. I think that ban is bullshit. It's not like he flaunted his racism so I don't see the big deal, people are allowed to be racist. Also, I pray Lebron goes through with his claim to sit out the next season if Sterling is still an owner.

Also it's fun to note that his girlfriend (the one that fucked him over on all this) is black but wishes she was white...tell me that's not racist...

My god. I hate the media. Cuban was not trying to be racist and I highly doubt he was trying to bring up Travyon Martin. But leave it to the media to bring that shit up. What the fuck. He is just trying to say that he would avoid a sketchy looking person, who the fuck wouldn't.

Normal thing to say, the contract with the NBA is if 80% of the team owners vote you out, you have to sell your team. Mark is a very smart guy went up agianst the SEC for I think 9 years over a law suit and won I have a lot of respect for him.
