MySpace - Food for Thought.

I just found this article, it's super long, I apologize. However, it's a good read concerning our beloved MySpace, read on:

Was MySpace created by an internet marketing company known for spam, adware and spywear. Was it bought for a rather large sum by news corporation known for pursuing power first and profits second.

Essentially the kids are alright they just need space and privacy to develop their own identities. It's an argument I'm totally sympathetic to, but it becomes completely problematic when one realizes that something like MySpace just isn't a traditional bottom-up youth culture situation at all. Rather it's something more like an engine, a structure to contain the bottom up energy and transform it into something else entirely.

Now that probably comes off as rather critical, yet it actually purposefully devoid of value judgments. If all MySpace is doing is giving kids a place to be themselves on line and transforming that into ad revenue its a rather benign operation in my book. But is selling ads the only reason for MySpace as a company? Is it the only reason News Corp was willing to pay many hundreds of millions for the service? Without inside knowledge it's difficult to answer, but it is an undeniable fact that the MySpace database is filled with a massive, perhaps unprecedented, amount of demographic data.

MySpace knows their users basic info, name, email, age, etc. Then it also knows their friends, their friends data, their favorite bands, the way they speak, who they like, who they don't. Heck it can probably run a simple algorithm and figure out your favorite words (assuming you use MySpace). A more complex algorithm and it can probably imitate they way you talk.

Not only does MySpace have an absurd amount of personal data on people, the sort of stuff traditional demographics companies have been collecting for decades. But it also has something perhaps far more valuable, a wealth of data on the relationships between all those people. And just what emerges from those relationships remains to be seen. We can speculate a little though.

Imagine a new friend request, good looking person, same style, likes the same books and movies you do, never met them but sure you say yes. Something maybe a touch off, a touch cold, robotic maybe. But they are in your network, in the conversation churn. But slowly they push in odd ways, push certain products, certain activities, push for more info. The future of marketing just might read the same zines as you, buy the same punk 7" as you, watch the same YouTube as you. Perhaps they might even know just what you'll buy better than you.

That's just a scenario, imagine another one. One where it's not about the personal touch, but instead the bigger picture. Youth culture has always relied on reality moving faster on the ground than it does in the board rooms. The ability for kids to find and build their own worlds outside of the ones filled with parents teachers and cops. But what happens if MySpace can see trends faster in their data than kids can actually see them on the ground?

Just a scenario, but remember it might be my space and your space, but it's their data in the end...

 
It's a crazy thought to think someone is behind the scenes taking notes and all of your conversations you are having, or music you like etc.

And we thought NS mods were bad. HA!
 
Who cares if they have this 'data' It just show's we like funny people doing dumbass shit on YouTube and what kind of music we like, unless you're a dumbass and post you're full name and address and shit.
 
Its like those supermarket 'club' cards. Its just so you can be tracked so stores know what consumers buy. (Clubs are rediculous too, you now have to have a savings card so you can get food at normal prices. It also makes you think you're getting a great deal, which is bullshit.)

Many larg corporations pay large sums of money to companys like myspace, safeway, nexopia, iga, sobies for the perpose of getting your vital data. While this imformation is suspose to be confedintial many of these companys sell this data to other companys, which are many times research companys. They then sell the data to companys who want to sell their product to you. While in previous times they had to test which demegropic will have the best response to a product now they have information to take most of the guess work out of it.

Yes i realize that this sounds a bit odd, even like I should be wearing a tin foil hat but the likelyhodd of this being true is far to probable
 
even before it was bought out by news corp companies were using myspace. my buddy works for an ad agency and was put in charge of doing a promotional thing for a company over myspace. They paid out the nose for being a featured profile and other things. However he didnt pu tit all together so well and it pretty much flopped but there is a lot of room on myspace for things like that and all the data they have collected is a advertiser or marketers dream. is this bad? i dont think so i just thin kpeople should be smart about what info they put out there and who they add as friends, but some people are just plain dumbabout these kinds of things.
 
and? Companies have been datamining the internet since it began. Its fine if a company uses information about me to market towards me. Google has been using AdSense to display ads relevant to the page you're looking at for years.
 
And what? It's merely an informative post, it's obvious the guys not trying to convince you of anything.

The question is WHY? Why do people on this site insist of making turning an informative piece of information into an argument. I think it's most likely one of coolest posts I have read on this site.
