My teachers are on strike

Well it's day 2 of the Strongsville high school strike. Yesterday was fucking nuts but its a little better now. Sucks for me because I have to go to school an hour early so some moron can attempt to teach physics. Then I go to ap calc where I sit in the library for an hour and a half because they don't have a teacher for it. Not tryin to complain but there is absolutely no reason for me to go but yet attendance is being enforced so if I have to go if I want to graduate. O and apparently anonymous is tweeting about us. So that's good.

Lol at teachers striking

Because getting 3 months off in the summer, plus all weekends, plus all holidays, plus teacher service days, plus almost no chance of getting fired, plus getting out at 3pm most days is apparently not enough.

Fuck teacher strikes. If you truly care about learning and teaching, how about you look in the mirror and be thankful for being able to teach in a union-lead America.

All those teachers should be fired on the spot.

Seriously. Their pay may be on the lower end, but they have quite the ideal job as far as schedule/days off/vacation.

yea they get all that time off, but it's not like the checks are just piling up for those 3 months each summer.

I know a bunch of teachers, and most of the ones who aren't married work their asses off all summer in a second job.

I think most of NS is too young to realize just how different making a few extra thousand dollars a year can make your life.

and that logic is hilariously stupid. Why do doctors make so much? Shouldn't the satisfaction of helping injured and sick people be their compensation?

you dont say ima be a teacher and make a shit ton. if they are unhappy with their job it is all on them.

ALL the fucking teachers in BC did that last year, shit was gay bro

my teachers didnt really give a fuck though the only thing that changed was no sports teams and no report cards

I am currently studying in Costa Rica and actually was coming to ask about strikes in the US. Never happened to me in the states, but starting this Friday, all my teachers are going on strike. Could last days or weeks. They strike every year and I've been told it lasted two months one year... The upside, on school.

I sympathize with them. For gods sake they gotta be around high school kids all day long for like 20 bucks an hour id probly kill myself.

dude, quit complaining about attendance.. You realize you are getting an easy A now for just showing up. You are lucky they dont cancel school until the strikes over, and then hold you in school over the summer.

Because they only actually work while they have classes... Any semi-decent teacher who actually makes their own lesson plans, quizzes, homework, and exams works much more than just 8 hours per day. And with supbar pay for how much they do.

This. Although my sister is gonna be a teach, I have to agree. They get a lot of time off so they don't need to bitch. I wish utahs teachers striked. It's fucked how screwy the school systems are here.

Yeah that's only because they aren't allowed to really strike. They did do a real strike when I was in 9th grade, no school for a week, only really hurt the 12th graders in the midst of college apps. Same happened in gr 4ish, at that point no school for a week was like christmas came early.

Yeah but to become a teacher it only takes 4 years and its not a very hard diploma to get.. so in the end, they really don't have much to cry about.

I'd go on strike too.

HAHAHAHA im sorry but i live in arizona (im saying it again) my mom is a teacher and she says starting salary is 30,000 (high school teacher) to be making 42,000 you would have to work at out school for around 50 years...

I'm not saying all teachers are like this but my math teacher in high school literally said and did the same thing for 20 years. My book had all the homework assignments written in it (ie. Pg. 520 all odds) and he would give the same assignments even. Once you've taught the same thing for a while I doubt you have to spend TOO much time planning.

Plus, you get the choice to have your checks spread out though just the school year or through the entire year so if you do it the smart way you're going to be getting paychecks in July for nothing. I know teachers make shit for money but they usually have good benefits with weekends, holidays, snow days, and summers off. It's worth it to work 50 hours a week for 9 months to have 3 months off to do whatever the fuck you want.

The teachers union for Ontario had told all teachers to withdraw volunteering for extra curricular activities to strike against the government that was imposing contracts that cut their pay, removed many of their sick days, made it illegal for them to strike and removed collective bargaining rights. If teachers were caught volunteering their extra time for students they would get in trouble with the union. Now the union has agreed to let teachers go back to volunteering their time if they so wish, but it was a very shitty first semester, because they couldn't strike they made it very hard for students so the government would allow them to negotiate a contract. We couldn't talk to teachers after class or anything. They didn't bring work home, all work had to be don't during the hours that they were being paid between. I understand why the union had them do that but it still sucked, We had no ski trips, clubs or anything. /rant

I always see my friends complaining about how tough it is to be a teacher. You teach 6 classes a day max usually at 45 mins a class-- your working 4.5 hours a day. That leaves you almost 4 hours a day to grade papers do work....or you could just gossip and sit in the teachers lounge and talk about how much work you have.

In NYC's suburbs i know people who make about 70k right out of college as a teacher, better than most people in finance working 70-80 hour weeks.

Plus great healthcare plus pension for life. They have it better than most people yet they still bitch and moan about everything.

hahaha fuck the teacher's union.

anybody who goes to public school in ontario will tell you what's up.

I could go for pages, but long story short I think if they want more salary and less responsibility they should have chosen a career path with more salary and less responsibility. It is hands down one of the easiest professional careers to become a part of so I don't feel one fucking bit bad for them.

the other part that sucks is that it isn't necessarily the teachers who make these calls, it's the union. so when all of our extra-curriculars got taken away a lot of my teachers were just as pissed off as the students. nobody wins.

this doesn't factor in all the benefits they get. You get paid that same amount even after you retire for the rest of your life.

Holy shit, I do not understand you people. Teachers play a huge role in the development of a child's/young adult's life. People put time in for a small salary to actually make a difference. Oh wait, I forgot - it is the CEOs of huge corporations that will help the development of children.

And I don't know if you people ever considered the fact that correcting school work, creating the schedule, finding good teaching resources, etc does not take 30 mins? In addition to full work days all of that has to be done, and often that work has to be done on their own time.

Everyone feels so fucking entitled to everything.

That bitch that that kid posted on here that was trying to get people to donate $50,000 so she could have this old italian bass because she didn't think she could get the parts she wanted on a cheaper one.

People like that.

All these fucking lobbyists, shitty unions, all these people crying that the world is unfair.

Stop bitching, find something you like to do and go do it. If you can't handle that than go fuck yourself cause nobody cares.

If I read right that said 60K a year, wtf are they complaining about?

Me and my single mom live on 48K a year

I hope your kids get the worst teachers possible since you clearly have zero respect for the position.

well in my 13 years of experience in the system about 2/3 of the teachers are mediocre to complete garbage.it's different at every school I guess, but I recently realized that when I started elementry school the teachers at mine were mostly older and strict but by the time I was in grade 8 they had all been replaced by women who just had kids and never shut the fuck up about it and just dump 4 hours of homework on kids every night and expect them to learn from it. it ruins childhoods.

in highschool it isn't as bad but there are still a good amount of fuckwad teachers who either have no idea what they are doing or are just complete dicks.

my english teacher was throwing around the word 'upwards' and she didn't know what it meant.

she told us we needed an upwards of 10 pages of notes and everybody was like wow that's a lot of fuckin notes, at which point we had to explain to her that upwards meant more than.

I respect teachers I just think everyone bitches far too much. Not just a teaching thing.

The sense of entitlement. Like people that bitch about being unemployed but refuse to work jobs they feel are below them. Shit like that.

My school went on strike, it lasted 2 weeks. Was pretty chill but it gets boring after awhile doing nothing

try 18 and i do have a point just like politics when people pretend they know what they're talking about

You're right. Whats the point of having an opinion on something if you're not an expert? Calm down or bitch somewhere else.

there's no winning that battle.

either he has to go in now and do nothing, which people will complain about.

or he can go in and learn from actual teachers, but during vacation time or during summer break....which people will complain about.

This is old but it's a pretty cool article if you're interested in this kind of thing.

sparknotes; Teachers in the US get paid very little compared to countries like Luxembourg, Korea, and Japan while spending the most amount of time teaching in the world.

Salary

This country seems to think that by increasing the hours of education per year they can raise test scores. In reality we need to make education a sought after profession, which would increase the level of competition in the field and the quality of the teachers. In places like S.Korea teaching is considered to be one of the highest status jobs, and only people with the highest levels of education are hired. Therefore, the quality of education across the country is outstanding and their test scores are super high.

Teachers (good ones, at least) have a very good reason to go on strike if you ask me.

I go to a private religious high school, the teachers here teach because of a love for the job and the enlightenment of young minds. They do not receive a pension nor any sort of compensation. The pay is relatively low for what they do compared to public schools. The pay does not go up like it does at a public school. Argue all you want but most teachers are sort of screwed by their salaries once they no longer live on their own.

I probably shouldn't say what I what like to this, as both of my parents are teachers and they taught me better.

You should probably have rephrased that then. It kinda came off as "teachers have a really easy job"

Which trust me, we dont.
