my slave makes rails

hell yeh. my dads friends buisness is slow and he can make me a rail. they call him mike the welder and hes like pro welding duder. all he wants is a nice schematic drawing to show him. now for YOUR help. i have never grinded in my life, not once. i can hit rails all day long on my snowboard but i have never went to the park on skis.

so what should i do? obviously a strait rail, but do i get a double rail for easier slidage? how long? how high? do i have it touch the ground or make it off the ground with a launch ramp? o, and this rail will be in my backyard so speed is key and what not.

im not asking for a drawing, just advice. but if you give me a kickass drawing, ill give you something kickass in return.

geta double barrel 2-3 ft off the ground and prolly a good 20-25 ft long will suit you nice.

yea, double barrel like 12 feet long. (thats the size that most commen stock is, so it will keep cost down.) welding is really not that tough, ask the guy to teach ya. I just started welding this pask week and I feel that i could piece a flat rail like that together fairly easily. I will draw up a simple plan in Autocad type program then throw it up.

Have him make 40ft S rail or a 25ft C or some nice kink, most resorts have nice flat rails.

here is one that i drew up last night, real simple design, easy to build an the cost will be low.

Materials:

2-12 foot 2 inch steel piping

4-3 foot 2 inch steel piping

2-36'x10'x1/4' steel for feet.

Optional:

2-4'x6'x1/4' steel for easer welding

To build:

Weld two 12 foot pipes together in a tangent like way, (parrell and even).

Then weld on 4x6x1/4 pieces 2 feet in from each end of piping.

Then weld on the 4 3 foot pieces.

Then weld on the feet. very simple.

Ask the guy to teach you to weld, its just like hot glueing in preschool, just with electricity. Very simple to make strong enough welds for any jibbing purposes.

I like your plans, what program did you use?

I used autodesk inventor, its a pretty slick program, autocadd based, but more for parts and pieces and less for houses and shit. Im gonna try and make some crazy shit, like roller coasters and shit. What you see there is nothing, i had to upload such a crappy quality pic because any drawing that comes out of inventor is like 10 megs.

how the program runs is cool shit to, you build each part in differant files, then piece them all toghter in a assmeble. that rail is like 10 part files and 1 assembly file.

is that a good program? i have never heard of it. the only reason im running this software is because its free (not really free, but in college you can take out software for the schoolyear for free.)

inventor seems pretty cool....

i'm rockin AutoCAD 2002.... full 3d.... it rocks.... i built a 3d house with it, and then i built a box, and i was working on a wallride....

thats sick. do you have aim?

o and even tho i would like it higher, i wouldnt have the space in my yard to work up the speed to either grind an upkink to that or build snow up to it. so im thinking about 2 feet high? would that work?

go for a flat rail. they are the easiest by far

UNBAN MOMMY!

yea, i have aim, abmxer2 is me. i can build other stuff too, Im thinking about putting together a rail plan book, putting it on cd, and selling the plans.

yeah dude pretty nice drawings, have you ever learned solid works? it works wonders, im in a technical high school and my shop is CAD, ive learned Cadra, Autocad, and Solid works those are pretty much the best programs try to download solid works if you can you will love it and if you need help just message me, you build the part in 3D first witch makes it 100 times easier because then you it builds your three views for you, leaving u only with basic dimensioning to fix if its wrong

go for a rail thats only like 1 foot off the ground, if you are just learning, this will be a good height since you wont be able to nut yourself

he probably wants to use this rail later on too, so a rail 1 foot off the ground would be a waste

Yea, NH LINE, that sounds pretty sick. I have very pretty good knowledge of this program, which is nice because if i ever have to work with another program i can kind of 'feel it out'. I just started college, and i can tell ya that if you are in tech highschool right now, learn AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. it comes in handy in college if you want to go to a tech school like me, Im at Vermont Tech. Also if you have the ablity to get into a machine shop right now go for it, thats what i am here for, and i have learned some basic stuff, i just need to practice with rail building.

yea, the only thing is 15 feet is not a resonable amount, you have to think of what sizes stock comes in. 8, 12, and 24 feet are commen for 2-2.5 inch piping, so you have to build around that.

ohh, and my advice to anyone out there is to first scout out your material, that can make a big desecion on what your building. For example, im going to build a rail similar to the one above pretty soon here, but my demensions may be different, just because im a poor fuck who doesnt want to spend any money material. I just raid dumpsters, then buy what i cant get for free. so you can see why i say get as much material toghether first, then think about design later.

shit, i didn't learn to hot glue until i was like 10. Do a single kink with plenty of flat and jump off the side before you get to the end when you are learning, then do for the downkink. If it's a mellow kink, it's easy to learn and hella fun

'Cheerleaders are dancers gone retarded'

hey yeah im in all the advanced placement i can get in CAD, what it is every year for my four years of high school i do half a year of shop and half a year of academics, also in one of the advanced placement things im in i work with Machine Technology (Another shop at my school) and i get to see how all my stuff that i create gets built and machined so its guna be cake in college for me... hopefully

ok i like the idea alot! how does 12 feet long and around 2 feet high sound?

and also what should my approach be? a jump? just step up made of snow? or have the rail go right to the ground?

NH Line it sound like you got the good idear from the start. You prolly know more then me right now. If i were you i would start applying to tech schools now.

damn thats one nice yellow rail

what you gonna do when shit hits the fan, are you gonna stand and fight like a man, will you be as hard as you say you are, are you gonna run and go get your bodygaurd

Just be careful of galvanized steel... i heard that it can be toxic when welded or something. Drench it in HCL tho, and youll be coo...

'Our drinking team has a football problem'

vt rider if you could take that yellow rail and add kinks at each end id paypal some cash for a few different angels or whatever and dimensions. looking kickass. not like full kinks going all the way down to the bottom, you know what i mean.

thanks.

that's a pretty easy design...I might make one up for the fun of it..I can get all the materials free from my school

those are sweet rails i need to get me some of them

what you gonna do when shit hits the fan, are you gonna stand and fight like a man, will you be as hard as you say you are, are you gonna run and go get your bodygaurd

'I can hit rails all day on my snowboard. What kind do I want to slide on my skis?'

Whatever dude. Same thing maybe?

Snowboarding is a bit different in that most boarders ride right on the the rails don't need to turn.. As skiers we usually air onto the rails and have to turn at least 90 degrees.. I agree, a rail is a rail, but sliding on skis is different than on a board.

Im rocking the Autocadd 2004 w/ 3d.. What now huh?!

-Jason

No shit it is easier to 50/50 a rail on a board than it is to slide on skis, but the entire basis for the thread is not thought out. Point being, if he slides rails on a snowboard 'all day long', he would know what to build or strive for.
