ive sort of convinced my parents to let me get something smaller so i can get more bang for my buck, so now im looking more into hatchbacks and smaller suv's. anyone have any recommendations?
interested so far in...
-audi A3
-volvo C30
-subaru impreza
if i still decide to get a SUV..
-toyota 4runner
-jeep grand cherokee (maybe cherokee)
-ford explorer
anyone drive any of these? any opinions? if you know of any other cars that fit my description then let me know.
cheers,max

i would go for the volvo because they are one of the safest cars out there and u are probably just getting ur license

is this for just driving around and getting you to the hill?

my family has an A4 and an explorer

the audi is nicer to drive, duh, gets better milage, faster, with a set of winter tires its pretty good in the snow

the explorer is nice and big, i haven't driven it in the snow yet

my, and friend's, experience with jeeps, mainly grand cherokee is pretty bad.

my friend has a grand cherokee from the early 2000's, very well taken care of, only 100,000 miles, and pretty much everything is breaking

yeah i have heard stories on both ends of the spectrum about jeeps, some say they run like champs no problem, others hate them. right now im leaning towards the audi as far as hatchbacks, explorer and 4runner if i get an suv

if your looking safe get on 08 or newer impreza. i have an 08 and they have a whole bunch of new safety features that the 07 and older models dont have. imprezas are pretty cheap new and used and get pretty good gas mileage for an AWD car. definietly test drive one i love mine.

volvos are piles of shit..

and for the op. if your parents are buying you a new car dont you think you should consult with them instead of ns?

my parents are helping me pay for a used car, and ive narrowed it down to these options with their approval. just tryna see some peoples experiences with them.

Toyota 4Runner definitely out of those SUV choices, I drive one and I love it. It sounds like your price range could also include a Toyota FJ Cruiser. I'd go with the Subaru out of the smaller cars, most dependable out of the ones listed.

This man knows what's up. For the most part, Toyotas are insanely reliable. Unfortunately, Toyota quality has dropped in recent years. Watch out on the FJ. I have heard the transmission is kind of spotty in the more recent FJs.

if you are under 22

DO NOT TOUCH THIS CAR WITH A 20 FOOT POLE!!!!!

it will cost a SHIT LOAD to maintain

I've had my 96 pathfinder since September of last year, and i have put nothing into it, until today, bought some yellow fog lights, key less entry, and some other misc stuff,

But yeah, get a car that you wont have to put much into maintain, 4Runners are a good choice, but they have such a high re-sell value its CRAZY!!! so if you got the cash, get a semi low mile 4Runner.

89 and just as classy as the day she was born.

my parents have a ford expedition (I know not one of your choices but very similar to the explorer) and the thing drives very well and feels very safe. it has something called advance trac which is suped up all wheel drive. even when trying to get this thing to skid out in the snow we cant. they also have a good crash rating. ours has 92000 miles on it and the only things we have had to do are oil changes, brakes, and tires.

i had an explorer, it was really shitty

my mom has a cherokee, its a pile, just like all jeeps

my dad has a 4runner but it has no balls to speak of

for SUV i would definitely go with the 4runner. toyota's are great cars and are really reliable.

as for cars i don't have any experience with any of those but from what i've heard the subaru would be my choice. my friend has a c30 and loves it. they're pretty cool cars and volvos are very safe. this would be a good option too.

i am only asking because the quality of somewhat newer fords is said to be rivaled only by honda and toyota if not better than theirs. there is a reason they make almost all of the cop cars and taxis

Because it would look like shit if state and local funded organizations bought whole fleets of non domestic vehicles? Why else do ya think almost all municipal vehicles in the US are domestic?

the ford explorers run into problems. don't buy em. as far as suv's go jeeps are alright but can suck in snow if not set up right. toyotas run for forever and usually do alright in snow. as far as cars go subaru's are sometimes awkward with the awd. i hate ours personally. but in terms of reliability it's held up well for the past 5 years. audi's are expensive to repair. keep that in mind. they also aren't the most reliable cars on the road. but i don't hear about enough huge problems to make them any worse than anything else on the road. most of these cars aside from the ford are going to be fine. it's more of what kind of shape the vehicle is in and how it was maintained than what car it is...usually. lol. good luck with your search.
oh yeah and if you want a bad ass rig you can buy a dodge diesel 5 speed and have some fun. get a 12 valve. 18 mpg city 22-25 highway and super reliable. mines barely broke in at 192k. hell my grandpa just turned like 470k in his haha.

my point is that they are durable but you sir are right too. if you look at tests done by others on the internet, magazines, and other independent works and awards fords quality is impeccable. there is a reason they never went under during this depression, it is that they make good vehicles. i was wrong with the explorer. dont get that. i realize the expedition and the explorer are on two different planets
