im about to get my license right....well my prom is 2 weeks away and ill have it by then but my parents wont let me drive a girl there with me, even though ive been driving for almost a year and im a really good driver. That pissed me off right away, i have to have my mommy drive me to my prom..they wont let me ride with any kids either. second, im going for my test tomorrow and my mom announced to me that if theres a bus to school im taking that and i cant drive there. busride=1 hr driving= 15 minutes.

How the heck can i explain to them that i dont want to take the bus, i want freedom from them, i dont want my mom driving me around, and i wanna friggin get out of the overprotective smothering canopy that they have put over me.

I really wish i had parents that didnt care as much as they do, seriously. with all this rediculousness they are driving me away from them more than me liking them because there is no point to what they are doing. i dont know if im making sense but anyways i really need some help here

For one, driving to your own prom sucks, get a limo dude! Then you can drink and not worry about shizzle like that.

I think you can explain to them how you feel by saying what you said in your last paragraph. Tell them you appreciate that they care about you but it is getting to be too much and it is driving(no pun intended) you away from them

i gave them a whole speach on how they were smothering me by not letting me get my license till the summer so they said ok but its not much of a difference because i cant drive

That sounds pretty rough, but expecting to get a car just because you have a licence sounds pretty spoiled. Unless it's your own car that you paid for, and are paying insurance for and gas and all other expenses.

I'm going to be 21 this summer and I still take the bus to college every day. I do get the car when I ask for it on weekends (or basically when it's not being used), but I'll be taking be bus until I graduate, pay off my student loans and buy my own first car.

that sucks, the same thing happened to me kinda. PA state law was that you needed your permit for 30 days, then you could get your licence. My mom made me wait 5 months, i had to renew my dam permit. Then they wouldn';t let me take anyone for 2 weeks, then it changed to 4, then 6, then i was finally allowed. I did anyways, but it sucked. Im 19, almost 20 now, and my parents especuially mom are retarted about everything from girls to drinking to finding out stories about my friends. It's the luck of the draw, you either get cool parents, or ones that are dicks. But in reality we have it better than 90 percent of the world, we aren't hungry, we can drive, and we have a place to sleep. But it still sucks sometimes. Just a tip, don't do to many crazy shit once you do get your licence in the daytime, cause there are so many eyes. Everyone says they won't peel out, speed, ect, but everyone does, and if your not careful, it gets back to the rents.

Yeah my parents were telling me they would make me have my permit for a year.

Well, I was determined to get my license in about 4 months so all I did was complain on how stupid it was I couldnt send in for my license date.

I made them take me to places even if I didnt really need to go, just to get them sick of bringing me places.

But when they werent home I still drove places in town anyway without my license...which was pretty stupid now that I look back at it.

My parents wouldn't let me get my permit until 8 months after I turned 15, then they wouldn't let me take drivers ed, which would have given me an insurance discount. Now that I've been sixteen for about 5 months, they still won't let me get my license, because they dont' 'think it's safe for a child to be on the road today'. I have to meet girls for dates, and bum rides from my friends. I also have to take the bus to and from school, which is 45 minutes longer than driving a car. I also have enough money to buy a car, gas, and insurance for at least 4 years.

'Victory? We're French, we don't even have a word for it.'
 
haha gdawg ur situation seems worse than mine

ive had my permit since last june and they said no license for a year but i broke them down to 11 months...amazing accomplishment

man i know how you feel, with all the street racing crashes going on in Vancouver my oarents won't let me drive with any of my friends untill there 18, and they won't let me drive with more than one other person in the car, but what they don't see can't hurt them

 
My parents wouldn't let me get my lisence when I was 16 because they said that I was not responsible enough. Then for my 17th birthday they said that my present was that they were letting me get my lisence. I was so angry that I was a day older (than I was the day before my birthday) and suddenly they thought I was responible enough. I boycotted getting my licence for a few months then I boycotted learning for a few months after that. I was 19 when I finally got my lisence, and I think I'm less responsible now than I was back then.

i'm almost 17 and they wont let me even get my permit. they also wont help to pay for anything either

im 14 and my parents let me drive when i am out at my cabin cus there are no cops, or many people, as long as they are in there car and we are not going super far. just this year are they letting me drive on the highways, and i got it up to 50 once, thats not fast or anything it was just fun cus i have never controlled anything but a boat going that fast.

Yeah I take the bus and the train everyday. My parents only let me drive the car with 'aproved' friends once a week on the weekends. You parents sound just like mine, except that bites, they drive you to prom? OUCH, hope I dont have that happen. SOrry, I feel your pain!

shit my mom is making me commit to something, and i was thinking why, so i was like i am to skiing, wakeboarding and soccer. she was like you dont play select soccer and i was like cus its no fun, and i doubt i could do it. and then she was like join a ski team then, she means racing, and i did that and it was no fun ether, and then she was like well you are going to join the racing team for sailing, and i was on it last year and she is making me do it again, and i get use of boats and all but she is making me go to all these regattas all over and this weekend i will be missing the last weekeend of skiing at alpental to go sailing up in vancouver in the cold currenty salt water and it will be no fun. basically she is forcing me to sail when i dont like it. i siad it was no fun unless it is warm and nice and she is like well its not all about fun. and its making me angry. then my dad was like well if you do not commit then we will not commit, so he ws like you ether go to all of the 9 regattas, thats like every three weekends gone all summer, or we wont support you going to any. now i am faced with ether going sailing a lot and haveing fun some of the time and haiting it some of the time, or going sailing when i can and want to wich wont be super much but i will have all fun so i dont know. they are like forcing me to do the whole circut and only like 5 other poeople in the whole yacht club do that and they dont understand that its sapposed to be fun and not everyone goes to every fucking practice, which is in the middle of saturday, and waists my day, and this sucks.

A lot of peoples parents make decisions that seem utterly retarded. One of my freinds, who was 18, usually couldnt stay out past 11, but thats not even half of it. He felt he was so smothered that he joined the Air Force for 10yrs (he regrets it now). Anyway your parents have ultimate power over you, and they think their decisions are logical and in your best interest. Since they have absolute power and they think their decisions are logical you cannot really change their mind, no matter how retarded their thinking is. To put it in perspective, there are so many kids your age out there who are too poor to ride the bus, or afford decent clothes, and some who dont have parents, or parents who are abusive and such.

yeh i wasnt able to get my permit till i was like 15, and then it expired and i had to get it again and wait six months till i could get my licence. but my parents decided to buy me a 97 subaru outback and pay for the gas and the insurance till i am 18, so i guess i shouldnt be complaining.

Big_willy, I agree with you completely, however, many of our parents do stress us out, and I see nothing wrong with relieving some of the stress by talking about it.

Wow I am really grateful for my parents. Yeah they were a pain on occasion but they were really cool 90 percent of the time. Seems like a lot of parents don't realize what happens when you smother a kid. They just want to protect their kids but the kids get so annoyed that they end up doing stupid and crazy stuff just to rebel.

Also, why do parent's and the governmentseem to think that once you hit, 18 or a certain age, you are all of a sudden capable of doing stuff responsibly? there are some incredibly inept and terrible drivers out there abd its scary.

But hey, at least you guys don't live in NY where u cant get your permit til you're 16!
