My opinion on spin to win and ian cosco

god damnit, i just reread the first sentence of my post and realized how badly it probly came across.

can everyone just forget i wrote anything about cosco and just consider this a thread on comps? i really didn't mean to hate on him at all....

Haha, oh wow

You really felt the need to start your own thread about this even though there is a 3 page one on it already. Being modest at its best.

You all fail to miss the critical point here: Ian doesn't give a fuck, why should you? He somehow got himself into the big air, he did what he wanted to do, end of story. Did he do it because he was hung over, or as a statement about style/big air, or maybe because he was hurt, that's all speculation because he hasn't said shit yet.

maybe everyones wrong about this whole "making a statement" thing. maybe Cosco did what he did just to stir up newschoolers. To see how long you guys would stay on your computer bitching and whining about what tricks he did and didn't do... instead of going out and doing something usefull with your time. People are getting like 12000 posts and shit, its kinda sad

no, there is a 3 page thread on ian cosco. maybe if you had read, i've said numerous times that this thread was not meant to be about him. it was meant to be about competitions in general.

so please stop making me post the same thing numerous times in my own thread.

TJ's 1440s are not like aerials, mabey they would be if he penciled the shit outta them, but c'mon, they're smooth as hell. Plus aerial skiers would shit themselves taking off and landing switch.

your brain has a good relationship with the inside of your ass. Seriously, deflate your ego, and re read his statement, it makes a whole lot of sense

I'd say that in response to bristolrider's comment, the large majority of this site would totally agree with you about not wanting this to turn into aerials. But some of these double flips and what not are executed extremely stylishly, very unlike aerials. I agree with phillipc's idea for judging most of all though, that larger spins with clean grabs should win comps. But then again, comps are only a part of skiing, and movies in recent years i dont think have been as much about huge spins as about cool stylish tricks, and i think film segments mean more then comps. Just a thought...

pretty much the best thought out arguement on the spin to win subject ive seen on these forums. I totally agree. Switch ten after switch ten gets boring... but if everyone was throwing 3/5/7 than a lot of the kids on this site would be on the podium... at this point a swtich ten in your bag of tricks is pretty much a prerequisite for being a pro. I like to see more techy inverts. You dont see a lot of mistys and rodeos in comps anymore... And I love too see Wilson and Bushfield throwing the switch double backs... Maybe they should judge skiers on creativity along with difficulty and style... That way if it does turn into a switch-ten-fest at least the person with the most interesting way of pulling it off will win. Just my thoughts

i really cant stand reading this thread so i dont care if this has already been said... but cosco and jossi were the only ones to land cab 12s in the slopestyle... it wasnt a statement or a stand for non hucking in comps or whatever, it was cosco realizing he had no chance to win, and having fun with it. but he is thoroughly enjoying everybody making the biggest deal in the world about it...

You know why I love Cosco?

Because he is the only pro skier to spend time with us on this site.

He is a pro- he doesn't really need to come on here, yet he shares his opinon that find skiing as a hobby and not a profession.

First of all, I haven't seen any footage or heard anything substansive other than little murmers here and there about the whole Ian Cosco thing. But if Ian Cosco did straight airs and 180 to "Just have fun" then he is an asshole. I'm sure there were a ton of kids who wanted to get into the Open, and for Cosco to take a spot and waste it like that would be stupid. If he wanted to "have fun" he could have done it some where else and some other time. And of course that is not to say that comps shouldn't be fun, contestants should have a good time, but that doesn't mean goofing off in a serious competition.

Those are my thoughts anyways.

note to all: you either take your spot or drop it...if you drop out, no one else moves in, you are just a scratch...

"sarah burke rory bushfield jon mcurray sarah burke"

would be cool, but doesnt seem like something ninthward would honor.

wait hes on Atomic now so all good!:)

Hahahah, high 5 to Cosco, Im pretty sure his straight air and 180, have been more talked about then any other trick in that comp, and personally when I do comps if I can't win them I want atleast people talkin but someting I did the next day. So again Props to Cosco

Exactly what i was going to say! you took the word out of my mouth. And to N-John360* don't forget about cedric, he spend a great amount of time here :)

that was a wated spot in the semis. If someone who would be serious would have had that chance, they could have done something sick.

why are they so many threads about this, its the open not the xgames folks. he was just having fun throwing some laughter into it. WHO THE FUCK CARES!!!

are all u haters serious???????

1."why is cosco even trying to make it in the industry?" buddy hes not trying, hes already in the indtsury and kills it...he doesnt need to try its natural for him

2."hes to weak to trhow down?"-did you see his slopestyle run asshole?

3."creates controversy everywhere"- yeah if ur a fag and like to talk shit

4. "Take the easy routes"- u basically dont know shit ...

5."there are alot of people hungry to make it and then you have some guye pulling this shit and just being lazy basically"- at least he made it to big air

6." 'ohhh boohoo i dont like spin to win...Im going to be emo' " - spinning to winning is gay, and the word is emotional dumbass, something ian obviousily was trying to make a statement about at the open, id agree, he DEFINATLY wanted everyone in the crowd to know he wanted to just be EMO.

dude thats fucked up...actyually to tell u the truth newschoolers is fucked up and so is all this bullshit gossip .........who the FUCK cares....unless u were there u shouldnt say shit, and if you were there u shouldnt say shit unless u actaully know the people/person and if you knew them you wouldnt be saying shit because u wouldnt really give a shit.

yeah he didnt do shit off the big air jump, he didnt try, and didnt really care honestly, ...is it affectin your skiing because of his laziness? damn dude u guys needa spend more time on the mountain, trying to get to his level so when u do, then you can actually talk shit to his face about how "lazy and shitty" of a skier he is ......................and less time on fuckin NS.

I agree that harder tricks to win the comps are cool and everything. The harder tricks should win. HOWEVER, it is perfectly acceptable to throw a straight air or 180 in the comp as well. Apparently he didn't care about winning so the question is not so much "WHY?" but "WHY NOT?".

Stop drinking haterade. And also, tone down on the use of the word "shit". Swearing is one thing, being trailer trash is quite another.

soccer moms, medals, demanding fathers, and coaches who used to ski race, that is competition skiing. spin to win

I'd love to spend more time at the mountain, but i have this thing, its called a job, bitch. But your damn right if I was a sponsored fucking skier who did nothing but ski, i'd be out there throwing down as hard as I fucking could, not being emo cause I dont like spin to win. Thats the point I'm trying to make, fuck, get over yourself.

i think its fucking lame cause i kicked coscos ass in slopestyle and i tried to get into big air but couldn't because i think rex got cosco in after calling the only forward 1260 in the comp(mine) a switch ten.

i wanted coscos spot so i have the right to be angry that he wasted it.

it wasnt right to take a chance to get a baddass shot under the lights and turn it into a joke.

ohter people worked there whole lives to try to get where he was AND WOULD HAVE THROWN DOWN WETHER THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE GONNA WIN OR NOT.

so i'm calling you out cosco. your a PUSSY

ok...forget about cosco, its the example he is throwing out there. There is ALOT of spin to win comps out there...soo he, i think, is just protesting that. But i think that he is a pro skier....like winning comps is his bread, and him doing that shows that he might just be there for fun. Not to be an ass or anything, but if your there just to dick around, give your place to a kid who wants to win this shit.

I think style, veriation, amplitude, and difficulty of tick schould win. Not just difficulty, not just style, but everything as one. Hell even how you land schould be accounted into it. I know Cosco is a great guy and everything, and he is a sick sick skier, but to me that was just a waist of a spot, and some "up and commer" could of had his chance to shine instead of some dude dicking around. But thats my opinion, let the hate begin.

couldn't agree more matt...wow, there are some people on here who are really reading into this.

i thought it was hilarious that ian did a straight air 'kanger. coming from someone who sponsors him as an athlete, i guess i should want him to podium but i couldn't care less. he was wearing a full 80's stlye robber mask and did a straight air...it was the highlight of my night. the US Open judging comittee wasn't going to grab some kid out of the crowd and put him in the comp if they thought ian was not going to try. he was in the event because he has killed it at comps over the past 2 seasons. sometimes you are not feelin it when you stand at the top of a drop in. the jump was stetchy to begin with and had an awful tranny. so maybe rather than drop out of the event, like many other athletes had already done, he wanted to provide a little humor to a scene that could use it every once in a while.
