So here is the deal, im gunna be in grade 11 next year and since the start of high school ive been asking my mom if i can take a year off after high school to go ski and do whatever else i want. everytime i ask she says no. but today drving home from the golf course out of nowhere she says "if you want to take a year off after high school to go work and ski at whistler then that is alright" she basically told me that she wants me to take a year off as long as i promise to go back to school after that year.

some of you are older but for those in highschool would your parents let you take a year off to ski?

i mentioned it and i got the crazy eye.

golf courses are a place of zen. you think alot. if i didn't quit golf i bet i would be like bill gates.

the only thing about taking a year off is that it is that much harder to go back. what you should do is when you get out of high school take summer courses and than take the winter off. seems much more logical to me

its true. I have a friend who wanted to take some time off after he graduated. Hes now 21 and hasn't gone back yet

it's true. it's going to be harder to get back into the school thing. i wouldn't do it, just go skiing during breaks.

nice parents. my parents are trying their damn hardest to keep me away from any school even near a mountain. but i've heard both ways on taking a year off. some say its the best thing they've ever done, others say it was almost impossible to go back to school. i figure once i get out of college i'll have plenty of time to ski bum it

going to school will allow you to make money later. taking a year off will LIKELY screw up your earning capacity later in life. The more you make the more you spend, it's all relative.

my mom said i could, she actually said she wanted me to, but im going to cmc so i get to ski every day anyway cause they schedule classes around skiing if you want.

Why do you say that? I took a year which turned into two bc i didnt have money, but this year im going to go back. Ive always wanted to go back bc when you see your highschool friends like juniors now and you havent even gone yet, its really depressing, but ive always planned on going back.

i wanna take a year off and go ski when i grad but thats in a while...but yeah just keep telling yourself that your gonna go back dont wait longer than a year

i'm kinda doing the same thing this year.. i'm going to the fall semester at my college from late august to like december 10th then taking the winter off and starting school back up in the summer around late may.. at lesat that way i'll get some credits racked up

haha. that's what i was thinking. man kids are whipped by these parents these days. unless they're paying your way...then that's different.

but yeah. do it. i did.

earning capacity you cant predict. but going back to school after taking a yr off is very very difficult to do.

go to school and do it where you can ski.

trust me, i took sometime off and getting back into school is alot harder than i had expected

you're in for a rude awakening if you think it's just as simple as "taking a year off to ski in whistler"

have fun paying for absolutely everything.....trust me, it'll turn out to be 3 to 4 times as expensive as you're predicting.

you'll never have the will to go back after a year of amazing skiing. just wait it out and go to a school near a mountain

i was condiering this too, and if i dont do it then i will just go to a college near a mtn. how often would i get out to the mtn if i was in school?

the way i'm plannin it is (if i go to a school near a mountain) is to ski only when i have free time. meaning not neglecting the actual reason i'm at school. but if its dumping, then screw class i'm goin skiing

whaaat there's a lot of people in this thread that think taking a year off is baaad.

going right into college after highschool is baaaad. you get burned out, too much schooling, you need a break, I've know a few kids who have taken years off and they loved it/it worked out well for them.

i think it shouold be mandatory to take a year off after highscool to ski

a kid i know got to be homeschooled/go to regular school for a year, but has to be in school for one more year. he got to ski everyday, and it didn't screw up his education. that could be a plan for you

it can't be that bad. look how many people do it....almost everyone! i did it. just finished my 3rd year of college and i have 4 more but i'm not burned out at all. college is the best time ever, but if you can take a year off to live on your own and ski then take it.. just be make sure you have a plan afterwards and that you can still do it. if you were planning on getting any scholarships or anything don't count on those still being there if you don't go to college right away.

finish high school, go to college where u can ski, then ski bum it for a yr after u finish college, and if ur college has a study abroad program, do that, my bro studied abroad in austria and snowboarded there.... i think thaz the best way to go

my dad took a year off after high school and was going to go back and become a dentist but he never went back to school and became a carpenter and works his ass off

here is something to think about... taking a year off when you are 18 to ski will give you a big does of reality, like parents not helping out with money, not bailing you out and stuff like that

PS my rents dont give me any money or bail me out ever!!!

most of the time i dont mind because my money sense is 10000000000 times better than my friends who's parents give them anything they want
