My life ends. Swains Demise.

I grew up going to a little resort in western NY called Swain. What seems like a little tiny resort in the middle of nowhere with nothing but bunny hills, back woods, an a terrain park really is. Swain has been the main facet of my life since age 3 when i learned to ski there. You may ask "So what, no one knows or cares where that is". The resort started shortly after WWII with only a T-bar after a few years of operation from a truely devoted family that put everything they had into it in post war america. It also has one of the oldest running ski patrol chapters in the United States. It's had its fair share of impressive talent. The NYS X-Games had Mike Wilson competeing around 2000. The Dadali's both skiied there. Pat Goodnough also learned to ski there. 4 insane guys have ridden what some have reguard a shit hole. That place is straight up my home, with out it skiing and this website would not exist to me. Yesterday (April fools day) i found out that the resort would be closing it's doors forever if someone doesn't buy it by August 15th. The resort has been on the market for multiple years and it hasn't sold which makes odds look pretty slim. This appeared to be a dirty april fools joke among friends. We called him a liar. He was not kidding. This is the truth. My resort shall be swiped form this earth forever if magic doesn't happen. Defeat is eminent and i just straight up feel like shit. I'm sure this isn't tha only resort that won't open it's doors next year an i feel the pain of others that have to go through it. My home is gonna be gone. I will have to go somewhere else next year but nowhere really feels like home. "But just as any passionate skier knows, new endeavors will manifest"- Landis Tanaka.. . . . . . .

My summer will be depressing and opening day somewhere else will be worse.

If you have an extra 3 million dollars laying around.. . . .

Buy me resort.

Thanks, NS

that sucks really. i know how lucky i am to live beside such a great mountain (although the park isnt AAA). driving somewhere else is just not the same.

Sorry to hear that man, I hate seeing NY resorts closing their doors like that. That price is insane though, he'll have to lower that if he plans on selling the place. Hopefully something comes through this summer though man, I'm pulling for ya.

Dude that sucks, really sorry to hear that sounded like a cool mountain. Now I wish my home mountain would close so I wouldn't have to split time between SR and it.

man this sucks! i was gonna buy a seasons there next year because ill be going to school at Alfred....i love skiing at little resorts like swain and kissing bridge over bigger ones like holiday valley or bristol because they usually take better care of what they have, but now im gonna have to hit up the bigger hills? shit

Damn that sucks, looked like a nice little place too.

Ouch. They just started lift service downhill mountain biking too this past summer.

I think, 2 or 3 years ago that the asking price was 3m. Unfortunately

it has a limited amount of skier visits it can generate without some

creative marketing to entice weekend warriors since its basically a day

trip resort.

In the interest of helping get the word out.

i would tell you just to go to bristol but bristol got rid of their park director last year and the park this year was shit. honestly it was the worst its been in 5 years. dont know what to tell you bro, other than to pressure bristol into building better stuff and make that your new home

I forgot to mention i'm a park an instructor employee so i lost my job :[

The asking price is now 2.2 Million.

Bristols park did make me cry. The last two years ours has truely been amazing. My parents will prolly get a Hunt Hollow membership or Bristol passes next year. My moms the ski club coordinator for our school so she's boned. I'm goin' to Niagara University next year so i'll prolly get a Holiday Valley pass and one to another resort too. I might even just stay in VT for all break an see if i could pick up somesort of work to ski deal. A bristol park job for tha month or two i'm home would be nice. I can do anything resorts ask me, The working knowledge i got at Swain between Instructing, park, announcing, pushing, sleds, fixing rails an doing straight up office work has helped me out so much for the long run.

I'm really sorry bro come to Bristol and get on that park crew and make it a better place thats something ya know? But i only made it to swain once this year and the park was looking legit, bigger than bristol. Really sorry to hear this I don't know what i would do if my resort shut down. +vibes

thats so shitty i have no idea what i would do in the situation that you are in. but on behalf of all the kids that ski at bristol your always welcome to join us like the guy above me said.

I'm deffinetly gonna be there a lot (Bristol). We need to build that park up. Awesome features but some shit just isn't set up right. You've always had a nice park. But one jump? Horrbile rail lips? Your flat down i believe it was used to be a mad fun rail, it had a literal jump in front of it. Crazy, that park has so muhc potential. If the skiiers ran it (Max Carey owned it) I wouldn't even be this sad right now.

thats great! the same thing almost happened to me like 2 years ago. the mountain ive been skiing since i was 6 was rumored to be shutting down. im not sure of the specifics, but its doing really well now. glad to hear things turned up for the better.

SWAIN RESORT SET TO OPEN FOR 2009-10 !!

New Operators Reach Lease

Agreement for Swain Resort

Agreement Signals Lease with Intent to Purchase by Experienced Ski Operators

SWAIN, N.Y. – The operators of Ski

Denton in Coudersport, Pa. and owners of Swain Recreation Center, LLC

announced today that they have reached an agreement to lease Swain

Resort with the intention of completing an acquisition of the resort as

soon as feasibly possible.

Under terms of the lease agreement,

Ski Denton owners Scott and Jodi Carts and Shawn and Celeste Schoonover

will continue ski operations at Swain Resort with the intention of

completing the purchase of the resort in the near term and transforming

it into a four-season family destination.

I too grew up at Swain and while I hardly even ski there anymore i was glad to hear the news today...

Here is some more info on the purchase:

SWAIN - Swain Resort has been saved.

According to a press release by Carr Marketing Communications, the

operators of Ski Denton in Coudersport, Pa., have reached a lease

agreement with the intent to buy Swain Resort.

The release states that under terms of the agreement, Ski Denton

owners Scott and Jodi Carts and Shawn and Celeste Schoonover will

continue ski operations at Swain Resort with the intention of

completing the purchase of the resort in the near future and

transforming it into a four-season family destination.

“It basically buys them a couple of months to a season or two so

they can get the financing to make the purchase,” said Eric Stearns,

general manager of Swain Resort, Tuesday morning.

“They are bringing back most of the employees, if not everybody ... this is a good group,” he said.

Specific details about the deal were not disclosed.

Stearns said the Ski Denton group does not plan on changing Swain’s

name. Season passes already purchased and any prior school ski club

contracts will be honored.

“The Ski Denton partners are a young, industrious, and capable group

of experienced ski center owner-operators,” current owner Philip

Saunders said in a prepared statement.

“However, this will only be a success with the support and backing

of government at the local, county, and state level. Swain is an asset

to the region and the lease plan is a short-term one. To finalize the

purchase and survive in the long run the various government entities

need to team up and step forward with needed financial backing and tax

incentives to make this work.

“The New York State Empire Development Zone program has been very

helpful in securing needed tax incentives over the past 10 years. This

combined with over $4 million in infrastructure investments over the

past decade has set up the new operators for success provided continued

community and government support.”

Saunders and co-owner David Flaum announced that due to declining

profit they would be selling the resort in April. Liquidation of the

facility’s assets was scheduled for Aug. 15 if a deal could not be

reached by then.

“We at Ski Denton are very pleased with this agreement and are eager

to help play an important role in keeping the Allegany County economy

viable. This agreement makes great business sense and we cannot wait to

get to work with the staff to grow and improve Swain. We are all very

excited about the possibilities that will come along with operating

both Swain Resort and Ski Denton and we look forward to getting

involved with the strong and loyal Swain skiing community,” said Scott

Carts in the release.

“This announcement is nothing short of excitement for the Town of

Grove ... everyone is excited about the fact that the ski center is

going to see operation and will have new owners. They’ve got fresh

ideas about using it and we’re all for it,” said Mike Johnsen, Grove

town supervisor, Tuesday night.

Johnsen said this news was coupled with some other good developments for his area.

“We have been working on high speed Internet and cell phone coverage

for years and I just received word from Southern Tier West that they’ve

received $600,000 in funding from a state grant to to provide wireless

high speed Internet access in Grove,” he said, adding, “It will take

months, not weeks, but I’d like to shoot for this ski season.”

Johnsen said he has also contacted Congressman Eric Massa about aiding Grove in attaining cell phone coverage from Verizon.

“He has been very receptive and I am hopeful that something will get done soon,” said Johnsen.

“Between the high speed Internet news, hopes for cell phone coverage

and the new operator of Swain it has been a positive day for Grove,”

said Johnsen.

The Allegany County Industrial Development Agency has played some

role in the deal, but details about its exact involvement are not clear

at this point.

“Appropriate steps to ensuring the long-term viability of Swain,” said John Foels, IDA development director.

The new operators plan to make a variety of announcements in the

coming months regarding plans to transform Swain into a year-round

destination, including hosting additional festivals throughout the

summer and fall season along with increasing the wedding and conference

business, according to the release.

A press conference with new operators and other officials will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Swain has been business for 62 years and has 102 acres of ski and snowboard trails.

Ski Denton is located about 65 miles south of Swain.

I am so happy that Swain has been purchased and will remain open. Thats great news and i hope that the mountain can really expand and suceed. Growing up skiing at Bristol from when i was a wee lil boy i know what it is like making a small mouintain your home. If it wasn't for Bristol my life would be very different and i would probably hate winter *gasp*

WORD!

I think the skiers should just run that park, the lips to every rail are horrendous, and you can barely clear have the jumps.

Last time I went to Swains park it looked SICK, but NOTHING was groomed. The entire park had about 2 inches of pow (upstate NY fluff anyway) so hitting stuff was mad hard. But I am super stoked I have good reason to drive out again this winter, as long as the park is more legit than Bristol's.

Sorry for 3rd post in a row :/

But I forgot to say congrats man!

If Bristol ghot shut down Id flip out, glad to see I started this forum with bad news, and by the end problem solved!

We really tried our best to get there an rake stuff off on days like that, sorry man.

Our park crew is a lot of skiers and we really have so much love in everything there. Safe to say it's a skier park crew (everything is chill between boarders an skiers and everyone is homies) but there is no bias like at some resorts.

might turn into a sledder's dream tho, ya never know. plus word on the street is that donald trump was looking into it

Donald Trump??? No way! haha

He has to own a resort somewhere doesn't he??

Swain was getting looked at by some people from out West least year or the year before but they backed out.
