My knees hurt

How do you motivate yourself to not ski when you're skiing well and it's so nice out, the homies are out. But I should be in the gym not skiing. How do you switch mindset?

Set up a basic gym routine/schedule and stick to it. 2-3 days a week at a time you know you can make work for you. Ski with the homies on the days in between or on the weekends. If this cant work, return to monkey.

Not good to be in the gym all day either but it doesn’t take long to strengthen your knees. Walking backward on the treadmill is great or sissy squats

Thank yall, but I know what to do for knee strengthening. It's the mindset change to better self-preservation i dont know how to do

I have a hard time with it in winter too. During the summer i have no problem being in the gym everyday, winter it goes down to 2 or 3 a week and i have trouble feeling motivated while im there. Mainly I tell myself i need to move my body in a different way than skiing and go do some exercises for the knee that tore an acl. Skiing is still the priority but maybe view the gym as needed recovery/prevention?

You’ll probably hear this a lot and it’s not gonna be mind blowing, but…

stop smoking weed.

just master the art of showing up to the gym.

start small.

get to the gym, do a 10-15 min workout then leave. Do that for a week. Next week, step it up, do 30-45 min. On the weekdays, don’t skip a single day. when you build up the routine it will feel like second nature. Then you can get into 1hr+ routines.

for me personally, anger and spite are the biggest motivators. Instead of feeling sorry and depressed, I trick myself into getting mad at the situation. It helps to get in that mindset by being a little drunk, hopped up on caffeine and blast some angry music like hardcore or hate breed type stuff. Start jumping around, scream yell, punch something. Think of those “friends” that fucking leave you behind when they think you’re not cool enough. Think of those shitty bosses that won’t lift a god damn finger while you slave away for bull shit pay. Think of the back stabbing coworkers that would throw you under the bus to come out looking better. Think of how unfair society is where stupid mfs get everything handed to them. Think like skierman.

alcohol is the worst thing for your body/muscles/tendons/joints, it dehydrates and breaks down muscle mass, its a poison.

drink water, i cut out soda, and enjoy body armor super drink by the six pack!

Vitamins: one a day, glucosamine, turmeric.

your boots... if you are driving your knees hard, into "brace boots", it makes my knees feel so shitty.

other than that, the gym is good for cross training, staying fit, but theres no replacement for actually skiing. strength skiing with top to bottom runs, really work for your turns by standing tall and squatting thru turns, one foot skiing excersises are huge, and yeah, you aint getting that burn from paying to lift weights.

by the way, im hiring entry level construction laborer in rado, get paid to work out, and be ready to flex on every season.

Been having the same problem, all the years of skating and skiing finally catching up to me a little. I do get some knee inflammation and discomfort after long days on the hill, some days are worse than others but overall nothing too crazy, just enough to know I am aging. Aside from working out 2-3 days a week, eating somewhat healthy, here are a few things I have found helpful.

- Just to reiterate, not that it isn't painfully obvious, but weight training and some cardio help a lot in keeping the muscles strong, I feel as tho this helps with impact specifically in the sense that your muscles can take more of the load than your joints and ultimately offers more support.

- After a day on the hill, I like to stretch and also ice my knees for about 30 minutes to bring down that inflammation, also just feels great if I'm totally honest.

- Pop a couple Advil prior to shredding or after, either way just helps with inflammation. If you struggle with some knee discomfort even when you aren't skiing, Advil can help alleviate some of that while you ski. For me I noticed that helped a lot when training for soccer while I was in school after not doing shit for the summer, just helped prevent the soreness.

- Epsom Salt Baths, this one is a bit of a grey area, I've done them a few times, but basically your body absorbs magnesium which is supposed to help with inflammation. Although I've read that there really isn't much evidence to support this.

- Cold plunge, there is a quite a bit of research on this, but I have heard that cold plunges can have drastic effects on the brain and body including an increase in dopamine that lasts about 6 hours, improved alterness, and better circulation, which is supposed to help reduce inflammation.

- Good sleep, this is probably the most important. After a good day of shredding, and just in general, you need to get proper sleep on a consistent basis. There is a guy named Matt Walker who studies sleep, and I do not think I have heard someone present scientific facts on a topic as well as this guy has. Not only will you get better at skiing, you also reduce the risk of injury by 60%. I'd recommend the joe rogan podcast with him, it's mind blowing. The reason I say you will get better, is because when you go into deep sleep, your brain is replaying what you did that day some 3 times as fast as it does when you're awake, essentially it is a shortcut to muscle memory. If you think this is cap, listen for yourself.

Some of these things are kind of up for your own interpretation in terms of how effective they would be for you, but that said, I think it's all worth trying. I think the main key in all of it is consistency; working out, getting good sleep, and eating healthy on a regular basis is going to improve joint pain and just make you a better athlete all together.

Putting this into practice takes some effort and discipline, much easier said than done, but that's the name of the game.

It depends. What does a doctor tell you?

Also, fuck the gym when it's nice out. Go touring. Go cross-country skiing. Go cycling.
