SOMERS - A former teacher and coach at John F. Kennedy Catholic High

School, charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old female student, was

forced to resign at the start of the 2006-07 school year after parents

expressed concern about telephone and e-mail conversations he had with

their daughter, school officials said yesterday.

William R. Menchen, 34, of Wappingers Falls, who worked as a substitute

gym teacher at Rye Neck High School this year, is charged with six

misdemeanor counts in the alleged abuse of a 15-year-old girl he met at

the start of the 2005-06 school year at JFK.

It was unclear yesterday whether the girl was the same girl with whom

Menchen had been in contact before his leaving JFK.

A spokesman for JFK said Menchen would have been dismissed last year had

he refused to resign.

"He had violated (New York Roman Catholic) archdiocesian policy with

regard to inappropriate contact with a student," said the spokesman,

Alex Malecki. "At the time, an investigation did take place via the

Westchester District Attorney's Office. No charges were filed."

The Rev. Stephen Norton, president of JFK, said the Mamaroneck district

had contacted the Catholic school's athletic director, Pat Maurer,

before hiring Menchen as a substitute.

"I would have been very clear if they had called my office and said that

we asked him to resign," Norton said.

Rye Neck Superintendent Peter Mustich said his district's athletic

director got a "glowing recommendation" from Maurer and was told that

Menchen was leaving the Catholic school for more money and to pursue

graduate studies. Mustich was critical of JFK's handling of the inquiry,

something the JFK president defended.

"I'm not sure she had all the pieces of information at the time," Norton

said of Maurer.

Menchen worked 12 days this year in Rye Neck, Mustich said, and had

undergone a routine criminal background check.

"(He) will not be returning" to Rye Neck, Mustich said.

Menchen had worked as a gym teacher at JFK at least since 2001. He was

also the girls volleyball coach from 2001 to 2003 and coached boys

baseball, beginning in 2002.

Malecki, the JFK spokesman, said administrators had known of no other

inappropriate incidents involving Menchen, other than the conversations

with the girl.

"My understanding from those conversations was that, at that juncture,

this young lady's parents did not believe that anything sexual was going

on, but perhaps (it) was moving in an inappropriate direction," he said.

Norton said JFK was also aware that Menchen had a police record when it

hired him. He apparently was convicted of a minor charge in Connecticut

in 2001.

"From his discussion with me, (one incident) was a college kind of stunt

or something and he went too far, and it was one of those college things

that had happened," Norton said. "The archdiocese was not ready to

dismiss him at that time with that explanation. Aside from periodic

tardiness, we didn't have any other problems with Bill. ... At the time,

I was looking at an employee who was doing a good job for us."

Putnam County sheriff's investigators on Thursday accused Menchen, a

former Patterson resident, of inappropriate conduct with a 15-year-old

Putnam County girl during the summer in Kent. He is charged with one

count of third-degree sexual abuse, three counts of child endangerment

and two counts of unlawful imprisonment.

The sexual-abuse charge alleges that he subjected the girl to sexual

touching; the endangering charge because his actions were likely to hurt

her physically, mentally or morally; and the unlawful imprisonment

counts because he used his car to transport her without her parents'

consent. The case remains under investigation, said sheriff's Chief

Investigator A. Gerald Schramek.

Menchen, free on $15,000 bail, is due in Kent Town Court on Oct. 16.

Efforts to reach him by telephone were unsuccessful.

My teacher from the 7th grade

Jimmie Vance Grubbs, 66, didn't say much as he left the Mecklenburg County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon.

Grubbs -- a former Language Arts teacher at Bradley Middle School -- is accused of molesting one of his students. School officials said Grubbs resigned his position in May.

Police said it happened while inside the school, during school hours and afterward.

Parents are appalled.

"That's scary. You don't think that something like that would happen from a teacher," said parent Wendy Caracciolo.

Huntersville police are trying to figure out just how many students were sexually assaulted inside the walls of the school.

"There are allegations from three to five children that we need to look into," said Lt. Ken Richardson.

Richardson said the 12-year-old told police he was also molested on a trip to Myrtle Beach.

Grubbs took other children there as well and officers are now investigating those claims with Myrtle Beach authorities, said Richardson.

"You hope you never have to work a case like this," he said.

Grubbs' neighbors said he seemed friendly and they wouldn't expect this.

"My little girl has been over there planting tulips. She was never out of sight, thank goodness, but just to think that she was that close to someone doing this to children," said parent Aprilia Lane.

Grubbs paid a $150,000 bond and is out of jail Wednesday night.

As Huntersville police interview more of Grubbs' students, they said they expect more charges will come out of their investigation.

Officials said Grubbs does not have a criminal record.

Huntersville police said Grubbs is the founder of a non-profit group called "Swinging With Kids," which raises money for children's sports.

Investigators said they're trying to learn more about that group.

Only thing interesting at my school that happened was one of the Manual Arts teachers got busted making bombs and the school basically got shut down for the whole day on a bomb threat.

We stayed pn the oval and played down in the creek, it was the best bludge day ever!

Here's the news article:

John Howard Amundsen is already facing a charge of fraudulently

obtaining explosives after police raided his Aspley home on Tuesday

night.

It is alleged they found enough explosive material to blow up five suburban blocks.

Amundsen has been remanded in custody and will appear in court tomorrow over the new charges.

Detective Police Superintendent Paul Wilson says it is the first

time anyone in Queensland has been charged with terrorism offences.

"These charges emanate from the Commonwealth Criminal Code, and the

charges are an act done in preparation for terrorist acts; using a

carriage service to make a threat; using a carriage service to make a

bomb threat - that is a telecommunications device," he said.

"Further charges of fraud and charges under the explosives regulation will be also preferred in relation to this 40-year-old."

Amundsen faced the Brisbane Magistrates Court earlier this afternoon charged with fraudulently obtaining the explosives.

His lawyer Andrew Boe says his client is not a terrorist.

"I think the public should and the media should just drop the ante a

little bit about being too preoccupied that this has got anything to do

with terrorism. It hasn't," he said.

"He's not associated with any terrorist organisations, there is a

completely plausible and non-nefarious explanation for the

circumstances in which he finds himself."

Queensland Police Minister Judy Spence has told Parliament a large police task force has been formed to look into the incident.

"The task force comprising 40 detectives, including federal police, will continue to investigate the matter," she said.

"The ideal situation in any terrorist act is prevention. All

agencies involved should be congratulated for the good work."

Apparently he had the explosives for a "special effects" thing for a "movie".

at my school districts environmental center (also a state park), that all the elementary schools use, there were certain trails in the woods that we were not permitted to hike on. a few years ago we found out that the man in charge of the environmental center (also a district bus driver) was growing pot in the forest surrounding those "forbidden trails"...needless to say, he did some time in jail.
