i got a grand cherokee that wont stay running when i start it. anyone know what the fuck's wrong with it?

I assume it isnt diesel...

It could be a number of things. Not only the fuel filter, maybe its the spark plug, there are a bunch of things that could go wrong.

you dont need a tune up...you need a fuel filter. if your car turns over, but the engine doesnt grab then thats what you need. another symptom is the engine grabs but its jerky when you drive (feels like you are running out of gas). how old is your jeep? how many miles on it?

 
its a 96, got like 100,000 miles. it'll stay running if i like rev up the gas and it runs fine once i got it goin.

Yah you need a fuel filter whoever said spark plug didnt know what they where talking about because if your engines starting then it means that its sparking.

did you run it out of fuel, like run the tank dry? COuld've clogged the fuel filter! Cheap easy fix! You can do it yourself! Just disconnect the fuel lines at the filter and switch them up! It is simple! Just watch as there will be a bit of fuel left in the line! I drive an 82 Jeep CJ so I know of the infamous Jeep probs. If that doesn't work, you might consider installing a manual choke, to lift the idle in the mornings or when the engine is cold! Best of luck!

there are alot of very nice american made cars...including jeeps. plus 95% of cars of non domestic names are also now made in the US by americans sonny

 
that may well be the case but the vast majority of people I know that have owned american cars have had bad experiences. And there is a reason why the resale value of my 89 Civic is more than a 95 Cavalier/Sunfire. It's quality. I guess that I can only go by my own experiences though.

 
shit i was wrong. sorry. So i was taking a break from work and i did go on the net to the kelly blue book site and did some quick calculations. my 89 civic hatch (i put in the right mileage and options) and it came out to $2,920. I then entered a '95 cavalier 2 door with the same options as my car (cd player, a/c etc. + pwr doors, locks) and it came out with $3,295. So i was wrong and i do apologize. but a $375 difference for a car that is 6 YEARS OLDER is just ridiculous. why would you ever buy a car that depreciates that fast?

(and yes i know that i have no life)

 
It could be a million things. Before replacing the fuel filter which can be a messy Job make sure the idle is adjusted properly, the air filter is clean. I've learned that trouble shootin cars is tricky buisness especially when it come to jeeps

The cherokee really isnt' a JEEP.

Anyone with a TJ, CJ, YJ won't waive to a cherokee owner. In fact, my friend gives them the finger when they do wave to him.

then your friend is super cool. i've had a yj and now i have a tj...its true we only wave to others with wranglers, cjs etc, but cherokees arent yuppie machines for the most part...grand cherokees are though.

hey my grand cherokee isnt a yuppy machine. its geared up for off roading, its got a lift, nice off road perelli's, a grill guard, and nerf bars. not a yuppy machine at all.

If you've had all that work done to your cherokee don't you have better means of trouble shooting problems than posting them on a ski site

Jeep Cherokees are the SHIT. People that drive them are pimps. Anyone who disagrees probly drives some piece of shit 89 Honda or something. And the reason for ur ZJ (grand Cherokee) for not starting could be one of a hundred diff things- fuel pump...did you pull that out of ur ass? Based on what little info that was given, that conclusion was retarded. There you have it- Thats what I think

i bought a 87 wrangler a few years ago and i tricked it out and resold it for 5k. then i saved up for a couple more years to buy my 99 black sahara that i have now, which i purchased off of ebay. its off the hizzy fo shizzy

because i think i have earned it. i'm a 3.9 gpa college student who does so much shit that i dont have time to make a lot of money and im preparing for law school. working my ass off these past 4 years is earning it i think.

ha...well i just got excepted into medschool, which i hear requires good academic standing, so now i have my undergrad and grad loans to pay off when i get out. i also work on the side so i can keep my car on the road. you one of those kids with parents who would pay them to get good grades in highschool i bet....

 
no i dont need to be paid to get good grades and congrats on med school. i'm just tired of people calling me out on here because my parents can afford to provide me with nice things. if all of you're parents would but you nice cars and shit you wouldnt say no, i wanna work for what i have. when i graduate from law school believe me, i'll pay them back for everything they've given me.

For starters, its probably not your fuel filter. More than likely its you Idle Air Control Valve(IAC). A fuel filter wouldn't let you even rev the car to keep it running, it would turn over and die.

thats not true at all...a car can still run with a bad fuel filter...it just feels all choppy and jerky....

 
it was actually just the alarm system on it. one of the sensors was fucked up and it wasn't letting the fuel in so the car wouldnt stay running. never heard of this shit happening but the jeep dealer supposedly fixed it and its running fine now.
