My friends thumb is stitched to her stomach

Yeah, just came back from seeing her, thought I would share this crazy story.

A week ago, my friend goes on a work-trip/party to her bosses house on a lake near Ellensburg, WA. Shes an experienced wakeboarder/waterskier/wakesurfer, and they go out boating and she starts teaching people she works with how to wakeboard and all. Anyways, shes wakesurfing (on a surfboard on a slack line behind the boat riding the wake). She gets tired, so she tosses the line and jumps off the board.

Heres where shit goes bad. The line ends up wrapped around her wrist, and it cinches. The boat is still going. She manages to flex her wrist so that the line pops off, giving her some nasty burns and bruises, but the line then cinches again around the joint of her thumb. The line is feeding out this entire time, but when it hits the thumb, its out of length, and the handle snaps into her thumb... and it tears off all the skin, muscle, nail and nerve from past the joint of her thumb.

Of course she freaks the fuck out when she surfaces, as the tip of her thumb is just bone and tendon. You would too. Long story short, they get her to the hospital after an hour and a half, where they happen to have a competent hand surgeon (though not competent staff apparently... all of her hospital forms read "left thumb" when its her right... and to make it worse, last year that same hospital fucked up and amputated the wrong foot of a patient... yikes). Since they couldnt find the tip of the thumb, they told her she had two options - amputate the thumb below the joint or cut a flap out of skin out of her stomach and wrap it around the bone and tendon in the tip of her thumb and try to get it to take so that she could use the joint still.

So she chose the stomach thing. I have to say, I've seen firsthand tumors being removed from brachial plexi, a doctor use a hand hand drill to relieve intercranial pressure in some dudes head and even a frontal lobectomy... and what I saw today when I visited her was seriously the weirdest thing ever. Her hand is attached to her stomach. They cut a flap of skin off from her stomach, stitched that hole together and wrapped it around her thumb in this weird ass tube of flesh that connects her thumb to her tummy. Shes doing well, 7 full paid weeks of disability from work, and all her surgery is free cause of her works health plan. Apart from going stir crazy in her apartment and avoiding relex reactions to move her right hand, shes fine. She wont have a nail anymore, and has 5 more surgeries and 5 more weeks of recovery (1 more with her hand attached to her side), and then she'll be alright. Dunno if she'll ever wakesurf again though.

So kids, remember, have fun this summer, but be careful. You dont want your hand stitched to your stomach.

Wait - so her thumb is still attached to her abdomen? Not just the skin that was removed from her stomach?

i honestly do not know what i would do if i saw half of my thumb missing. +vibes, hope she manages to make it back out on the water.

Apparently, if you do that the skin dies and doesnt graft well to the bone and tendon. She said it was really creepy in the ER too, after they put her on morphine she examined her thumb and said she could still flex her thumb and see the tendon pull the bone down... uuugh, that made me queasy just typing it.

wow id freak out so much. everyones got fake nails these days so she can still technically have a nail. +++++vibes

I want to know why the boat didn't stop immediately after she let go of the rope. I mean thats what a spotter is for unless it slowed down to turn around but usually you can tell when theres someone still attached to the line.

I cut my thumb down to the bone when I was younger, about the entire length of the thumb, slit a tendon in half and ya..tons of blood haha. I took the wrapping off of it right after I did it on the way to the hospital to look at it, it was the craziest shit I've ever seen. My bones were so pearly white, it was creepy.

"come visit me. my thumbs stitched to my stomach"

you got that phone call and didnt take a camera...come on lol

i hope she still wakeboards/surfs n everything tho. that happening prolly wont again but i do understand that its a psycological thing. next time i guess she could throw the rope out away from her wen she lets go to avoid this from happening. this would prevent her rather freak accident.

+ vibes to her recovery

damn that sounds horrible. shes very lucky(ok not lucky) that her medical bills were covered. I dont think id even want to see the price of an operation like that + all the other shit shes going to have to go through. wishing her a good recovery + vibes

Ya dude ropes can get pretty dangerous quick. On the waterski team im on we have releases. so say if im getting drug by a boat the rider just pulls on a rope ( not the same one that im holding on to) and it releases me from the tower

easy as that

+++ vibes bro

Its like a one inch tube of skin going from her right side near her belly button to the joint in her thumb. I'll try to get a picture for you guys, its really... creepy.

that almost sounds like a medieval medical thing

"and we shall seweth fair maiden's thumb to thine abdomen heretoforth"

When I was younger, me and my broseph were playing cool ninja games in the forest with machetes and we decided to chop a tree down. I was chopping from the opposite side as him and my machete got stuck and he swung and sliced the middle, pointer and ring fingers of my right hand. I went to the sink to wash all the blood off and I looked into the cut and I saw tendons and bones and stuff. I also got to see a crack in my bone because the impact broke my middle finger.

Hand injuries are fuuucked upppp.
