My Friend Totally Fucked his Whole Season Today(short story)

Well, no more ski season for my friend. FIrst day up he fucked himself. FIrst, I'll give you a little prologue.

So last season, ski patrol set up one of those bamboo cross things on the downside of a nole(sp) on a mogul run. So we spent numerous runs airing over this thing, doing stupid grabs and cross-taps and such. We each jumped it at least 5 times each.

Well one of my friends showed up, aired over it, and somehow managed to land, twist his leg, and snap his leg over the top of his boot. Imagine that for a second. Now this was a week before the end of the season so if your gonna break your leg, that was a pretty good time to do it.

I should also point out that although he is a fairly competent skier, he weighed 125-130ish at the time and kept his DIN at 13 despite my warnings.

Back to the story...

My friend went up skiing for the first time this season. All week long loveland hasn't gotten any snow, so despite 8-12 inches last sunday (that is if you risked a $1000 fine by cutting the ropes), today was gonna be an icy bitch.

I told him there were absolutely no substantial jumps or anything, just a couple tiny tiny little kickers to mess around on. After that, he told me he was going to pull a five his first day up.

So basically, he hit this unbelievably tiny jump, tried for a three, didn't make it, twisted his leg and broke it AGAIN. exact same place, same break after 5 and a half months of healing. I'm not sure if he turned his DIN down like I said he should or not.

That makes the third ambulance ride to Denver from loveland that his parents have had to pay in the last three seasons. I figured out the cost before and it ended up being something ludicrous like $30-50 every mile.

He also bought some brand new pipe cleaners for this season, not even mounted yet.

TO sum up:

friend broke leg last season.

rebroke it first day this season.

Sucks to be him.

He bought some brand new pipe cleaners for this season, not even mounted yet, and he never got to ski on them.

that is really shitty.... but at the same time, your friend needs to learn some responsibility for his own body and acitons

Yeah. I feel bad for him, cause I missed skiing A LOT and missing out on a whole season would blow unbearably.

I told him to take it easy and to try not to break his leg again.(in a jesting fashion.) Plus he was my ride up to keystone, breck, winter park, and beaver creek every once in a while. fuck.

Even though I still feel bad for him, if he broke his leg again because he STILL thought no DIN 12 rossi binding could contain his almighty self, and didn't learn his lesson the first time, Its kind of tempts a person to say,"Karma's a fucking BITCH!" I will try to refrain.

If you would have drove him to the hospital yourself, you could have saved his parents thousands of dollars! What a nice friend you are! Haha.

That's one reason ski patrol is a bitch. They hauled him down the mountain and laid him in a bed ski patrol shack. The kids mom works at loveland and she told the ski patrolers to shoot him up with some morphine and she could drive him. The patrollers said woulnd't let that happen, which might be a good thing because his mom drives like a crazy bitch when shes in a rush.

i partial tore some ligaments in my knee right near the end of last season, and after hearing this story i think ile be taking it easy for the first part of the season, by the, does skiing in a knee brace make a difference to turning and stuff, cause ile be in one most of the season?

pics or it didn't happen. I'll give him 100$ for his pipe-cleaners to help him with his medical bills.

That was pretty dumb. He had what was coming to him.

...and that's why you don't try anything new the first day of the season.

aww damn bro, i feel sorry for your friend, i was in that position to, but not breaking my leg, thats really lame, ill be hoping for a quick recovery

That really sucks for your friend, but keeping your din at 13 when your 130 lbs your kinda setting yourself up for shit like that but that really sucks

that sucks.

my friend brice did similar thing two years ago.  broke his leg snowboarding, then rebroke it his first time up on a wakeboard that summer.

I'm 200lbs and rock a DIN lower than your friend. He got what was coming.

Hope he has health insurance!

that sucks hugetime, i usually break fingers or something first day but ive never had a season stopping injury like that, but at the same time hes a dumbass for setting his din like that so i cant say i feel too sorry for him

I'm really surprised he didn't see that injury coming. 120-130 lbs, he doesn't need more than a 10 DIN binding... probably set around 7-8 max.

yea it really sucks for him, but 5 months is not enough time for a spiral fracture to heal, (if hea cracked it above his boot thats what im assuming it was). Any smart doctor/surgeon will say 6 months recovery PRIOR to starting any sort of sports/training. So, that being said, I wouldn't have slapped my skis on for at least 8ish months. I understand how he feels, I had to miss an entire season due to a torn rotator cuff, my surgeon wouldnt let me ski and now I understand why, this was like 5 months postop. And I just retore it 18 months after surgery (over this summer), but I'm not having surgery again. Best of luck to your friend, next time make him stay off the slopes a bit longer, and tell him not to pull stupid shiz like that. Hijack his skis and lower his din for his own safety.

Jake

he's a good skier, i'll give him that, but he thinks he's some kinda badass so he raises his DIN all the way up when he doesnt need to. previous to this he's also torn a ligament or something in his shoulder and displaced a vertabrae (sp?), but thats all i can think of off the top of my head.

Ambulance rides fuck you over hard, this kid I know got hit by a dumb bitch, broke his leg in 3 places and rode like thirty seconds to the hospital, costing him almost 2 G's.

moral of story

-dont crank ur din to 95 when u way 60lbs

-tryin a five for ur first trick of the season on a 1/2 foot kicker is stupid

-parents can hate there own kid even if they dont have a disability

-ambulance rides cost more then ur life is worth

all summed up in

-stupidity kills...u

im 140, and i ride like a 5, i dont need a high DIN because i dont ever hit anything larger then say 30-40 feet (Stupid EC "resorts")

maybe he was trying to compensate for something by setting his din to 13.  it doesn't make any sense to do that at his weight.  too bad he had to learn that at such a high price

although i completely agree his DIN was at a dangerously high setting...for all the people that are marveling that such a light person can get a high din setting, its all about leverage. I can be set at the same DIN as someone that is 60lbs lighter if they have a small foot and I have a big one. This is because if you have a big foot you need more leverage to physically get your foot out of the binding, while if you have a bigger foot/boot size you need less leverage, therefore lower DIN setting compared to your weight.

Bottom Line - Me being 220, 6'2, big foot, i can have the same DIN as someone 160 5'8 small foot.

im 90 pounds and have my din set at 4.5 at the moment, maybe mines a little low but his was way wya way way way to high, like retarded high

Fucking hell nothing makes me cringe more than the thought of re-breaking a bone in the same spot. The thought is truly horrifying.

i feel so bad for that guy. i mean i look forward to skiing all summer, and then if i broke my leg first day i would be so bummed after all that anticipation. well i hope he can get it healed to ski at the end of the season hopefully.

my best friend and kid i always always shred with tore his acl on a preseason rail last fall, and sat out the whole season. he helped me edit our movie and shit, but he had to sit out on every one of our adventures, and we had some ridiculous ones. it actually put a bunch of stress on our friendship too, it was fucking terrible.

long story short, i feel for him man. injuries are the worst, be careful out there this season

hahaha so shitty... not to smart to be that high i have learned from blowin my knee out at a 9 im going down to like a 7 this season!
