My first cork attempt:

Ok so we were all standing in our baby park..thats all we have open..above the money booter (a kicker with the landing right behind it) haha. we were contemplating on what tricks to try because the landing was soft. a young boy was throwing backflips off it so my old self am wanting to learn cork 5's. They all said no because they didnt want to land on their sides or back and said if i went first they would do it. as i roll into the jump i am thinking to myself i have this, i will get it. I roll up the lip and throw for my first cork ever. As i soar into the air approximately 3 feet above the ground and as i spin into the 360 i realize, shit im actually corked! as i am thinking this i abruptly feel the slushy wet spring snow condition upon my face and everything blurry, a pool of blood upon my snow planted face. Story short, i got the cork 540 but i didnt get my feet under me haha..i landed on my face and now i have a huge fat lip with scrapes all along my chinny chin chin.

Now that i threw my first cork i am not as scared as i was. my question is, will a bigger jump allow me to have more time to get my feet under me?

see thats what i thought too..but i had the spin i just didnt have the amount of air to get my skis down underneath me..basically the way im picturing it is that i got into the cork but ran out of air time to come fully out of it..like my tips were starting to come down and they touched the snow but i landed on my face

if you had a 540 degree rotation already completed, and you landed on your face, then you would have needed something like a 7 or a 9 to bring around your feet. you can't just stop rotating and put your feet back under you.

i know what your saying..and i agree with you..but i started bringing my skis down to the landing and was like landing on my tips basically and thats why i landed on my face..if i had more airtime i think i might could get it..we will see later in the season though

that feeling is sooo fucked up! ik exactly what your saying, like you trying a trick, your a little scared, and halfway through your like holy shit im actually doing this, then you realize the ground is right there so you tuck up and hope not to break your face. good stuff right there

find a wind lip into some pow or any kinda soft shit, pound a bit of a lip into it by riding up it a few times, and then huck yourself off that with some buddies. good fun, low risk, learn some new shit.

he lives in PA.... southern PA at that.

i did the same thing first time i tried them out at canyons last year. the jump and landing were fine, but as soon as i got off axis and saw the ground below me, i just got super freaked by it and stalled my rotation in the air cause i didnt know where i was in relation to anything, proceding to do the exact same thing you did. just give it a few more tries and it wont feel as awkward as the first time, and you'll start to bring them around. you might want something more than 10 feet long though...

Does sound like a lot of fun...but on the east coast we don't have much of a chance to do stuff like that...should be going on a trip out mid-west maybe to Mineral Basin, Jackson Hole, or some place else that I might be able to find a nice little wind lip

the more you do cork 5s, the better you'll land. i first had the same problem. i always landed on the tips of my skis, but after some time i learned to end the off-axis spin earlier and i could land normally.

i dont know how the size of the jump affects, but i guess the bigger the better. i've only done them from ~30ft jumps.

did you have any advice before trying or just huck it? nice corks arent hucked at all. When i do them, i set my spin then instead of looking over my shoulder i look down almost kind of like lookin between your legs(but not literally). But then again the only corks i do are with a simple grab. It throws your spin off axis but you still have alot of control and can spot landings. Try that next time and see if it helps. Does anyone else do this when doin nice floaty corks?

yeah i do it always. im so used to it that im having a hard time no to spin corked. trying to look at the tails of your skis helps alot. forgot to mention it.

IMO....

I think cork 3's are where you should start, because you can take them just a little off axis to fully inverted (yes). With a 540 or 720, you need to commit MUCH more.

The way I go about it is to throw my hips up and out... A good way to try is if you spin left... drop your left hand down to a safety grab and take your right hand and try to point it as high as you can to the sky. This will start to get you a bit off axis to practice. Once you get more use to it you can go more corked. gl man

i learned with a lot of practice on tramps. id suggest doing that. i was trying cork 5s last year and always landed on my side. theyre pretty hard

matt after seeing that jump...i would have to say that that was your only problem haha....try it on a bigger jump and im sure youll be golden.

i can cork on a tramp fine..i tramp a lot its not that i had no idea what i was doing..^ i think ben got it right though haah
