My dream

Ever since I was a kid I had a dream to be able to compete in freestyle skiing. Once I turned 10 I found out about the X Games and was absolutely blown away by the things the competitors could do. I started watching the winter olympics after that as well. I was super motivated to go skiing about three times a week and I wanted to improve so I could compete some day, but now for the last 5 years I've been skiing actively hoping to improve and I even went to a "freestyle school" for one season. When I first started out I got the basics down pretty well, but after that I just did the same things for three seasons cause I was scared to try new tricks cause I felt like I didn't have what it takes. This season I got my first real "tricks" down which were a 360 and a front 270 out of a pvc pipe. I'm slowly starting to lose my motivation to try to improve cause my goals seem so unachievable since I can't get any new tricks down. I just don't feel like I could ever even compete in a local freestyle competition cause my improvement is so slow and minimal. I just don't want to give up though, since it's the only dream I've ever had. I need to work on my mindset, but I don't know how. I'd appreciate any and every tip you guys have to get me motivated to keep going. Thanks for reading this way too long story that probably had about 60% unnecessary text. Also sorry if this seems like I just want attention.

Perish the thought kid... you're in the right place.

First... dudes on X and Olympic are elites. A million wannabes to every champ.

Next, time, money, forget loved ones, passion baby. Your passion in your head doesn't match the passion necessary on slope.

Success is fucking haarrd dude.

So decide

Follow this dream knowing there's no guarantees you'll ever reach that level.

But guarantee, if you don't try, you'll not like yourself

Probably the best comment I could've hoped for. At the moment my goal is to even be able to compete, like at a local competition. But it's always been my dream to be able to compete in a bigger scene. I've wanted to work towards it although after about 4 years of skiing I started to realize how tough it'll be. There's always been a thought in the back of my head about not being able to make it to the bigger scenes, but I've just pushed that thought away cause freestyle skiing is the only thing that I've really been passionate about. For the last four months I've started feeling like maybe I should just give up my dream since I start more and more feeling like I'll never be able to achieve any of that. Man, just talking about stuff like this makes me feel so pathetic.

Taint pathetic, tis real.

Give it a year ( next) of just smashing it.

If not after that.... move on, homie

2 things

1. You can keep progressing as long as you keep skiing. Sont stress it, dont worry about xgames. Work on cleaning up a trick or learning a new one. Or even just ski.

2. Enter a local comp. You don't have to have a chance of winning to have fun. If you're comfortable hitting a few rails you could probably have a great time. Maybe see what said event usually builds so you know sizing. If its a rail jam or slopestyle jist having an idea if you can hit the features. If you can hit the features? Why not? Comps are fun.

Rail jams are kind of like a skatepark. The guy doing the huge frontside air gets a lot of attention, but the person that does their first rock finally gets a bunch of hype too. Sure there will probably be better skiers but who cares. Have fun.

Thanks for the pointers and I totally will focus on trying to improve for myself right now, but about the comps. We don't have a lot of local comps here, and when we do even though I'd like to join I cant rly enjoy it cause I feel like I'd just suck and and embarass myself there... So maybe I might try that like next year if I can get some new tricks down by then.

Ski with a crew, have fun, get on the trampoline. I grew up obsessed. Would study parks and work on spins and flips but I lived hours away from skiing. I would vibe myself out and put a chip on my shoulder because of how badly I wanted to succeed. Didn’t start really progressing in a way I wanted until I learned to enjoy it and push myself in a more organic way. At the end of the day, you may make it. You may not. But never forget that you fell in love with skiing because of how it made you feel. That, I believe, is the key.

Even Colby Stevenson said he skied better after his car crash because he focuses on what makes him happy at the start gate. Pressure is a double edged sword. Use it in spurts and it helps. Turn it on all the time and you’ll get burnt out.

Best of luck!
