My car caught on fire

yep. just like the title says.
I was driving back from class today and i started smelling what seemed like a campfire. except the smoke stayed with me for about two minutes. I pulled over to a side road and as i came to a stop, smoke started to come inside through the air vents. I opened my hood and smoke was pouring out so i kinda freaked out cause my car is my baby.
Luckily I had a fire extinguisher in my car so I sprayed the bottom of the manifold (that's where it looked like the fire was coming from). I got the fire out and eventually got it towed to my indy shop where they're hopefully gonna tell me what happened.
apparently early 2000 vw's are being recalled for heat shield issues. If thats what started the fire, then volkswagen will pay to repair it for free.

to be honest the second i read the title of this thread i started laughing....

but that said thats reallly sucky

heeey this happened to me about 2 months ago in my 94 accord.. except it was due to a short in the horn..

i almost shat myself too

dude i was so dumbfounded. i mean, i never thought that would happen to my car. ever. at first i just stared at the smoking hood going fml, i was totally in shock.

haha not to steal your thread, but when it happened to mine, i wasnt in it at the time, and i walked outside of the mall and saw some random dude rubbing snow on my bumper, and i was freaked out..

then i realized it was smoking and we opened the hood and threw a bunch of snow on it

hahaha sorry to laugh but if I saw some random dude rubbing snow on my bumber i'd throw out a serious wtf?
but what was the damage to your car?

yeah i literally just stared at him until i realized there was smoke coming from my grille.. haha

and no real damage, only 1 out of 2 horns work now (why there are 2, i have no idea..), and a lot of black ash

seriously... I stared at it for about a minute in shock, then i finally came to and remembered that i had the extinguisher with me. 40 dollar purchase to save a 6000 dollar car..hopefully

i saw this a while ago..

best decision i made. i would've been fucked otherwise.
at least its getting warm out side i can ride my ninja.

well on the topic of things on fire.... last week a girl in my school lit her pants on fire while trying to light a cig in lunch. it set off the fire alarms and the firemen had to come, we missed like an hour of school, it was sweet and hilarious

alright so I got news from the shop. It looks like my exhaust burned a hole through the heat shield which started the fire. so volkswagen is paying for the repairs.
hallelujah!

wow dude shit. I'm gonna go buy an extinguisher asap too. I mean.. a quick spray and it's no biggie versus watching my car in fucking flames. I literally just wrote myself a note to get one. glad to hear it all worked out in the end.

related: the other day in school someones batter caught on fire or something and we had to evacuate. when we were allowed back in it was time for me to go to that room. it was pretty funny walking in and seeing a bunch of firemen standing around and then realizing that's why we had left the school for a bit.

maybe i should get one...

my mom has a saab 900, and one of my parents knows a guy who was driving a similar model saab and put his hand down on the center console only to realize it was burning hot. he stopped the car and got out, and soon his car was engulfed in flames. kinda scary.

your moms a baller! is it an old style 900 or new? old=baller new=meh.
but ya on my 9-3 the console gets superrrr hot adn so do cd's, but its not a big deal casue so far nothing has lit on fire haha

Go faster so the air puts the flames out.

jk

Yeah cars catch on fire. Pretty scary shit.

Proceed to stop the car and walk the fuck away, grab stick, take said stick and poke marshmellow, and let the good times roll.

While this is occurring, if you didn't have full coverage on your car, now would be the time to get on the phone and get that.

all i could say to that was holy shit and kinda chuckle
but hopefully the people were alright?

haha, still, that's kind of sketchy...
my car is a '95 saab 900 SE turbo convertible (claim)
the retractable roof doesn't work (unclaim)
