My buddy's Wall strike in Moab 11/24/13

hard to watch. what happened exactly? what caused him to get turned around? and why didnt he get a running start?

That was crazy though, multiple strikes. Glad to see that he lived.

Sometimes parachutes deploy wrong and cause the jumper to do an instant 180. You can't do shit about it. Base jumping in Moab is very common and I think I remember reading a story about this on KSL... couldn't quite understand how he survived the way the article described the incident but I get it now.

Is there a chance he'll upload the raw footage of it? Setting the whole video to slo-mo to that horrid song kinda ruined the vibe and you get no sense of how fast he's plummeting. It was like watching an MSP film.
 
The last like 10 seconds is a regular speed jump.

To the guy asking how it happened you can see in the slow mo when hes looking at his chute deploy that the lines are twisted and when they gain tension everything straightens out and he spins, kinda like when you spin around on a swing.
 
scott stop trying to sound knowledgeable by putting people down. you pretty much restated, in non question form, what the kid asked. and if you watch the edit, you would notice the real time footage starts at the 3:00 mark...

I hope the guy is alright, that first hit was horrible.

Definitely kept expecting the canopy to fold and for him to start accelerating. That was so gnarly. I've ridden my road bike right past that spot. That just gives me the heebies.
 
That was just shy of a free fall off of that damn cliff. Insane. The real speed footage at the end really drove it home. It's hard to appreciate the true impact in slow motion.

He had a 180 opening, it happens. Usually it's caused by bad body position. Definitely want to get a running start to increase separation from the wall. That particular exit especially.

The worst thing was that he should have been able to turn it around. He accidentally pulled the WLO toggle which is supposed to release in case of a line over. Then when he did pull it, he kind of fluttered it instead of burying the toggle to make that thing turn ASAP. Lastly you could tell he was fixated on the one rock that sticks out in the whole wall.

Easy to sit here and play armchair quarterback but the two 180 openings I have had I was not fooling around in turning as fast as I could. He's doing alright though and will be jumping again soon.
 
Wow, that's cool because I stopped watching halfway through when it looked like it was just going to be him showing different angles all in slow-mo to a shitty song.

I cannot believe, on that huge wall, he hit the section that juts out like that. Fucking...crazy. Glad he was (relatively) ok.
 
Honestly it made me thinking he was eventually just trying to go for it so when he did make impact he would at least get caught up on the wall and not keep slamming. Like he did.

Looks like he needed to take more than 1 or 2 steps before jumping. The extra outward momentum surely couldve given him more time to react by putting him farther away from the cliff? I dont base jump so i dont know but it just seems logical.

I'm glad your buddy is okay. HOLY SHIT GOPROS ARE AMAZING. The clarity and detail from those is just impressive.
 
First watch through I was waiting for the chute to collapse, or get hung up on the wall. It's amazing he survived that shit.
 
Yeah, remember seein that on TV (blanked out before impact obviously) but Jeb Corliss was flying under the bridge and he was describing getting splatted with his uh... remains as he flew under and opened up. He also happens to be the only one to survive a collision during a flight.

skiierman knows everything and everyone else is stupid. he is frustrated by everyones lack of knowledge.that song is terrible though.
