My boots have become deadly

So I've had my boots for four years now. I've consistently been good about removing and drying the liners after I ski, particularily because my feet often get wet. I've never been able to locate the source of the leak or anything, so I always have assumed, disgusting as it is, that the water is foot-sweat.

They've always, to some extent, had a 'funny' odor. Definitely not a good one. My socks always reeked a little as well. If I could describe the smell, it would be a mix between 'wet dog' and 'rotting milk'.

So now to the reason why I think this has become a thread worthy experience. I was at Whistler skiing last week, and instead of drying my boots, I tossed them into the rocket box with my skis and went off clubbing. When I got back to the condo we rented, I took off my shoes and people dived for the balcony while I took off and double bagged my socks. We drove back the next day, and I (stupidly) put them down in the basement with my skis. A day later (yesterday), I went night skiing. Boots were a little cold and damp, but whatever, dry socks. When I got back last night, I removed the liners and put them on the radiator downstairs in our living room. I left my socks in my room, which reeked worse than ever before, and went off for 'nightly activities'.

Wake up this morning. My room smells like death. Culprit - two 'crusty' socks. My plant next to them has turned a bit of a funny light green. My liners are definitely dry, but the ENTIRE downstairs smells powerfully of wet, milky dog.

So two things - for the short term, how the hell do I get this smell out before we have guests come over tonight, and 2) how can I get my boots to the level of odor that wont kill me when I drive up to the pass with them in my car?

open all the windows in your house and maybe have some fans blowing?

and try putting news paper in your boots after using them. my boots reeked last year, but i got new boots this year so i dont really know if newspaper cures the smell. but my new boots smell like newspaper.

get some fans and open the windows to air everything out? maybe some febreeze too. good luck, sounds pretty nasty.

Yeah, we have air passing through the downstairs from outside, its like a icebox down there. Fbreeze didnt work, I tried that last year when they got sorta bad. This is on a whole new level of reek however.

i used the newspaper thing and it made my boots smell worse. however if you were to get one of those boot drying dealies im sure that would help along with some of those shoe or boot deodorizing balls get some oust for the house. do not use axe it will set off fire alarms i know from experience. there are some good solid ideas in this post i think

large amounts of baking soda works for getting rid of foot smell, my old shoes reaked and I would leave them sit for a couple days with baking soda in them and it would get rid of some of the smell.

Baking soda eh? I let a friend borrow my boots and they've reeked ever since. Thank you dweezil. I usually pull my liners out and let them sit over night. Otherwise I put them in my furnace room and they dry pretty quick.

Sometimes, if nothing else works, you have to fight fire with fire. Hit them with an even nastier odor and maybe the two offending smells will cancel each other out. Try pissing in them.

heard it kills brain cells to, just light some scented candles or something and get the fan go with the windows open

close all the windows and smoke a fat blunt. Don't open any windows until anyone gets there, just bake the place out,it should help. Also, I think the newspaper helps a lot. Jam wads of it in the boots when you are done skiing and it absorbs a lot of the moisture in there.

Some boot dryers would go a long way towards helping. If you can, get the stick ones that just sit there, then they don't blow bad smell all over the place.

heres what i did last week, same situation, left them in my trunk for 4 days though.

i took the liners footbed and everthing soft and i put them in the wahsing machine on cold/cold and low spin speed, people say that this is bad for it but it was fine, ill get to it later.

next i washed the shells thoroughly with soapy water but they still smelled like ass

then i poured a box of baking soda in the boots and left them for 3 days which got rid of most of the smell.

then i stuck my liners in the dryer on the rack so they didnt get tumbled around, just for long enough that they warmed up, i just did this beacuse the washign machine kinda got rid of that worm in feeling of the liner so i heated them up and wore them around.

i swear to god im gonna do this every month because my boots smell brand new, but the nicest thing is they feel new too!
