So I figured instead of raining on their parade over in the Minnesota/Wisconsin forum, i'll just vent in here since it is highly likely that they won't check this thread out.
We just found out today that Jibulant Productions and FP32's new film Highlights isn't slated to be shown at MWSFF, even though Shaggy was told last year that they would be grandfathered in for this season's event. So needless to say we're pretty bummed about the whole deal and we likely won't be in attendance. It just is disappointing because we've spent a fair amount of time preparing for MWSFF and trying to get the movie finished in time, to find out a couple weeks before hand that we aren't even invited.
Oh well, i guess. But we will be showing Highlights and Eye Trip at Greendale Cinema on Nov. 4th so you should all check that out

yeah kind of pissed about it also tad but, since this thread is here billups and I are heading up and looking for a couple of people to make the trip a little cheaper

Sorry to hear you are upset, and I can sort of understand your disappointment. I was contacted once in May by someone from your crew, I was not contacted again with any update until this past week after the schedule had already been set. In order to enhance the experience of MWSFF for everyone involved we had to make sacrafices to fit a great schedule in within our time and budget constraints.

This year we had the opportunity to expose more athletes to the great scene of the Midwest. Nick Martini approached me about showing Network at this year's festival, as well as personally attending the festival to premier it, I jumped at the opportunity after seeing the movie at IF3 this year. The crew from Too Nice was in contact with me all summer, and they are excellent ambassadors of the festival. Their film was also filmed a lot closer to home for most people attending the festival.

My original plan was to host a two-day festival this year, and that was my plan up until this July when my budget was set. I had said Jibulant could be a part of the festival back in March when I was still under the assumption we were hosting a multi day festival with room for a plethora of ski movies from all over the Midwest.

I hope you still plan on attending the festival as we provide a unique chance to interact with the midwest skiing community, and showcase some of the best films in skiing and we keep it at a great value every year only $15 compared to other events which cost a lot more.

This is all well and good, and last year was certainly a good event, but if you want to provide a "unique chance to interact with the midwest skiing community," wouldn't it be in your best interest to show a movie based out of Indiana, a state that is about as Midwest as you can get?" The very little exposure our scene even gets was through your festival last year, and whenever Laker puts out an edit or places in a contest.
You can't deny that the Jibulant film got a strong reception last year. Kids were really stoked on it. Not having them this year sucks because they busted their asses to get the film done, and now they can't even show it up there because you ditched them when some pro came up to you and you "jumped on it." Honestly, I'd much rather see their film than Like a Lion. I know you're involved in it, but I have little desire to see it.
Just my thoughts though.
 
This is well said. I would rather see the Jibulant film at a Midwest based event. Maybe that is just me and my wanting to stick to my roots as a skier. But, I think skiing is a lot about where you're from and who you grew up looking up to and skiing with. That to me is not some skier on tv that I saw at the X-games, that is the FP32 guys tearing it up at PNS!
 
Hate to say but same thing happened to me. BP slotted my film in, and as the day the flyer came out I found out that it apparently was not going to be shown due to the fact that it wasent on the poster. I showed my film the first year of MWSFF, and supported it even since, and believe its a just cause. There needs to be a large event like in in the midwest, and BP hats off to you for making this happen.
I can see where he wants to Pro films to be able to have the pro athletes in attendance but it would also be nice to support locally made films. There is a gathering of children that like to go to shake the hand or get the autograph of Tom, Hornbeck, or Martini, and yes its great to have them witness to such a scene, but i think what he doesn't realize is that you/we would bring much more support and additional attendance to an event since there is a local push.
This will be my 5th film, and have been run through the gamete of good times and the bad. And again BP, hats off, I know what work it takes to make this event a success.
Obviously its nice to show some pro movies, but its nice to show some hard work done by the guys who get out with little to no budget, and work to highlight their region, athletes, and love for the lifestyle of skiing.
 
To add on to what bfilm said, Wallisch and Hornbeck were so stoked on the Jibulant flick last year. That's a testament to the scene we have at Perfect North and the level of riding that we have down here. Sucks we can't share it up there, but if you want to show all pro films and the Minnesota film that wasn't all that great last year, that's fine too, it's your festival and you make the decisions.
 
Well my intent obviously wasn't to complain outright to the staff of MWSFF or BP as it seems, so i apologize. I thank those of you who know what we at FP and Jibulant do, and support us.
I also understand wanting to get the most bang for your buck with a pro based film supported by Pros, i can't knock ya for that. But with that being said, I'm disappointed in the attitude toward and outlook for independent ski films in the future. When FP started doing this something like 10 years ago or something like 8 or 9 films ago there were 3 companies that you could see a film by, so we did something unique. Now the "market" is flooded with kids pouring their heart and souls into independent films with no backers and no financial support, which is great, but when you look at the films that were selected for the "amateur" category for IF3, one was filmed on a RED ONE, and there were no less than 3 pros in any one of the films. How is that amateur? I am in no way saying that our film should have been shown at IF3, but when you look at what was chosen for an amateur category, what chance do the rest of us have? And now with MWSFF it is looking like it is nearly an all pro line-up with one small exception. And again I can't knock them for their reasoning, but what makes small independent films great... that they inspire others to try. To try and make new films, which in filming themselves will make them better skiers. To try and do new tricks and find new places to ski. To try and inspire others.... that is why i'm sad that there won't be any independent ski films out this season in the big film festivals. Not only do they inspire, but they give amateur skiers a view of skiers that are on a level that they can someday ascertain as opposed to triple flips and crazy big mountains rarely seen by the laymen. I'm not bitter about us getting bumped, I get it, but one true independent film out of a whole handful of pro-films.

I appreciate all the input here.

Maybe I was slightly jaded planning the festival from out here in Utah, talking to people about what they would want to see, and thinking about what was going to provide the most value for the long run. Basically my goal this year was to provide a Ski Party like you'd see at a comp or at IF3, but way closer to home, and a fraction of the cause.

Everyone's opinion in here has showed me that there is room and demand for these small movies, something that I wanted to really expand this year but could not. If you look at my original festival info kit from early 2010 about this year's festival you can notice I was selling a sponsorship package for the "MWSFF Award". I was unable to gain any support for the award, so instead of half assing it with a gift certificate and free tix again I decided to hold off and invite films instead.

I have already began the process of holding larger venues for longer amounts of time. I hope to introduce a new format next year that allows me to show more movies, and allows to the time to showcase local talent in a way that's not going to be overshadowed by other movies. We will also be working to make the MWSFF award a reality in 2011.

I have extended my apologies to the Jibulant crew, and offered them some free tickets to come party this year. I feel bad about not being able to show the movie but at the same time I am trying to keep this event as tight and sustainable as possible. It's especially important this year as I am traveliing back from Utah on a really tight budget.
 
Awesome event, was really hoping to see Too Nice, and the Bfilm flick since I have never gotten the chance to see one and they always look sick. Its understandable whats happening, just unfortunate. Maybe next year.....?
 
While I am stoked on the line up for this years festival, I was looking forward to some of the local (midwest) flicks. Is there anyway they could still be incorporated into this years event? perhaps Jibulant and b-film could play during the after party?
