I was running into this problem- either phone dying because of cold or dying because its a crappy phone. Worrisome especially in the backcountry. My solution to this was to get one of these covers to keep your phone warm and dry. the poor man's version is just to use a koozie.

For the battery pack, this one here is a winner. Super light weight, holds a charge well, same size as a phone only way thinner, wired or wireless charging, and best of all? just 15 bucks. I would recommend everyone get this.
