I think one of the big problems with trying to find a current example of bands like Hendrix, The Doors, Pink Floyd, and such is that you cannot compare the two times. Back then, there was much less musical diversity. You basically listened to either doo-wop/pop, or you listened to rock. Often it was both.

The times are drastically different now with people listening to so many different genres of music. There is too much variety now to try to compare musicians to the popular musicians from 40-50 years ago.

The Talking Heads formed in the late 70's and their most important work is at least 25 years old....we're talking about current or recent bands. You could pretty much say the same about REM -5 years.
The Arcade Fire will only become more popular, similar to what happened with The Cure.

First off, to yell at me about how blues-rock is a ripoff of blues makes you look like a dumbass. Of course it is, you shithead. So is rock, jazz, and every other major American genre. Secondly, I said MODERN blues. How many other bands are producing good blues NOW? This is actually a fantastic point. Music is too accessible and specialized to create these timeless "super-bands" ala Led Zeppelin.
FM radio is dead. Technology and the availability to listen to whatever you want at any given time has made audiences much more fickle.

Secondly, defending Black Keys' music against a narrow-minded asshole does not mean I'm their biggest fucking fan, not even close, I just happen to like what they're doing. Every argument you make screams "I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about" - from using Muddy Waters to define "old school blues music" (when in fact 'old school' does not mean Chess records, which is electric blues), to confusing your definitions of 'hipster'. Mmhm. Obscurity was not the point of naming those artists. The point was to illustrate a definitive line that is drawn to categorize a certain genre of blues, which you still don't understand. The whole idea of being an "old school" blues enthusiast, which you claim to be an authority on, is to actually KNOW which artists lie where, and which ones are considered different categorically. You're not really arguing any of my points, just how I present them.
And, as I said above, my approach to your musical tastes comes not from a perceived mainstream or arrogance, but my opinion (which is quite valid on this site) that your taste is BAD. The reference to Zeppelin is another shot at your so called "wiping the floor" with me in terms of blues knowledge. Zeppelin has stolen more than 18 different songs from everyone from Willie Dixon, to Sleepy John and Robert Johnson and Lightnin Hopkins. No one who enjoys "old school" blues can honestly say they enjoy Zep stealing lyrics and melodies from real artists. Hooray for your lack of knowledge.
Instead of trying to cover up your ignorance by calling me hipster, try and actually refute me please. I'm still waiting to hear about how awesome you are at music that you think you can come at me with such mediocre knowledge.

As I said, I enjoy learning about new music from other people, so I'll be sure to look up some of these artists you mentioned. As someone who loves music, I'm sure you understand that when someone comes up and immediately classifies your entire musical taste as bad based on your very moderate opinion on one band, things are gonna get a little heated. Music is a very personal thing, and whether or not you think I have good taste is irrelevant to me -- I know for a fact I have a very well-rounded, diverse selection of music, and I play music myself and am therefore able to appreciate damn near anything that has some talent and energy behind it.
