Musicians in the last 15 years that will stand the test of time

Obviously you all know that classic rock evolved in the late 60's and early 70's. Many of the artists from back then will be cemented in time as the pioneers.

My question is what artists from the last 15-20 years will be remembered and referenced forever?
 
well, if you want to get technical no musician will stand the test of time.

soon enough someones gonna fuck something up or our galaxy will collide into another and there will be nothing left of our existence or any musician for that matter...
 
Man you have no idea what you are talking about. If anything, to answer my question you would have to know a lot more about popular music then unknown music.

The point of a hipster would be to listen to all the artists you have never heard of... so you are dumb

You think your kids will know Tool and qotsa? I don't...maybe because I like them and let them listen to it, but apart from that? No chance...

It's a really good question I must say...I have absolutely no clue...

Let's scroll through my iPod; possible candidates:

- Coldplay

- Gorillaz (probably not...)

- John Mayer, for sure

- Jack Johnson

Apart from that I can hardly imagine anyone'll know my songs in 15 years...

Not White Stripes. Not widespread enough to be known and listened to in 15 years.

RHCP for sure though, no doubt they're on this list
 
Honestly, the only band I would see truly being remembered is the Simon bolivar youth orchestra, and that's solely because of the plans that they have for the next fifteen years.
 
First, second post is a win. Second, a lot of people suck at time periods. David byrne? Like he is going to be remembered for anything solo over the talking head? Yeah right.

I would say radiohead and phish are good because the bulk of there good shit came in the earlier part of the 15 year range.

The problem is the majority of bands that will be remembered, aren't that good. There is a lot of bullshit that people will remember over quality music.

 
Other then coldplay and the red hot chilli peepers none of you have a clue what music will be remebered. Unfortantly I hate the music that will be remebered but the names are probaly

lil Wayne - who sucks btw, Gaga- not much better, Christiana Aguilera, Mariah Cary, Eminem- who is ok

The point is the band that will be remeberd are the ones that majority of the population listen to. Not What we think personaly. Most of these rock bands wont be remebered because its not what is popular now.
 
I've got a small list in my head of the musicians who I think will stand the test of time, i.e. the music that will define the past few decades for generations to come in the same way that the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin etc. have become representative of their own eras.

My short, but expanding list includes:

Dr. Dre/Snoop/Nas/Gangstarr/Biggie/Tribe Called Quest

David Byrne/Talking Heads

Red Hot Chili Peppers

they have a pretty hardcore following. but so do a lot of grounds so who knows

coldplay and u2 have the biggest chances if you ask me of without a doubt being the most influential bands.

^this list is not impossible. though not really rock music, but anyways

tool, queens of the stone age, the mars volta(for being weird as fuck), a perfect circle, pearl jam, radiohead, jack johnson, ben harper, the black keys, red hot chili peppers, dropkick murphys, flogging molly, gogol bordello.

ehh it depends on how much branching off you want to do. because there's a lot of punk bands that won't be forgotten,(afi, pennywise, bad religion, goldfinger, less than jake, etc) and a lot of metal bands(metallica, slayer, craddle of filth, unfortunately slipknot probably won't be forgotten, i can't think of others ) that won't be forgotten either. there's a shit ton of music that stays semi underground but are still on major labels, that make great music.

i gauge an artist's success to how many albums they release, versus how many are talked about. i.e. which bands have huge followings, how many singles do they have, how many albums will they and have they released? then you have to gauge how overly marketed these people were? did their followings die after the craze did? etc.
 
It's going to be all that shitty grunge and rap music.

And Radiohead/Red Hot Chili Peppers. They're cool.

Every genre has some artists that will always be recognized when it comes to that genre and will most certainly not be forgotten.
 
if you're looking for staying power of a lesser known artist, RJD2 has been killing it for well over 15 years, and releases constantly solid albums, tours nearly incessantly, has had multiple tracks used in ads, and composed the mad men theme song, and licenses tracks to many other mediums as well. he'll be around for a minute.

Radiohead. again, been around for more than a decade, produce thought provoking music, slay it.

Jay-Z. - huge cultural icon. other rappers are just not on that same level. just like the RJ example above, Jay has been killing it for well over a decade, and has staying power to come. no other hip-hop artist has the staying power of jay, except the two big deceased ones, but even then, nobody outside of you little white-kid hood rats can even name a single tupac song, and the biggie resurgence of the past few years is dying off. possibly Kanye if he keeps working hard like he has been for the past few months, instead of making headlines for being a pompous ass.

Green Day, as much as I hate them, are as close to a pop-punk cultural icon that we will have. fall out boy could have been there too, but they broke up right as they were on about to crest into the "icon" category in music.

Gaga, not so much. she is the flavor of the year, but chances are, 2 years down the road, nobody will care about her. she is going to run out of the shock and schlock she uses to gain the fame she has.

thats my 2 cents.

 
most of the classic rappers, like biggie, tupac, etc. have already lasted at least 10 years, so i don't see why not more
 
I like this list. I HOPE Black Keys will live up to this but I'm skeptical America cares enough about good blues any more. Rest of the list is bang on.
 
In the right circles Steven Wilson will be known for a long time. He's been incredibly successful and influential, but his music is lost on North Americans it seems.

If Lady Gaga puts out any more albums as successful as her first 2 she'll be remembered for a very long time. She's doing something different with pop music, and I don't just mean her music - the costumes, crazy interviews, activism, all of that will make people remember her. The same thing worked for the beatles, and it could very well work for her.

Thom Yorke/Radiohead for sure.

Dr. Dre will be remembered, as will Jay Z. Household names, nuff said.

Gorillaz will be well-known for a long time, Damon Albarn is a genius.

OP I'd like to hear your opinion, you sound like an asshole. I agree that the Chili Peppers will be remembered. White Stripes aren't big enough to outlast their immediate career I think, even though they're great.
