Music Rights for selling DVDs?

Hey M&A. I'm working on selling a movie I'm making this summer. The only thing I have been concerned about is music rights. Has anyone ever had to work with this? Do I have to email the artist AND the label? Do i just need permission or does there have to be some printed agreement? Please let me know if you have any experience!

Here's a link to a very small preview of what it will contain (because i suck at embedding) http://vimeo.com/24549036

Thanks, Matt

fuck, my post got messed up, if you plan on selling less than 500 units (maybe even less than 1000) i wouldn't worry about it.

Okay, even if im distributing it through other sites? Like our sites that are sponsoring it?

the problem with it is that i can understand you wanting to get music rights, i did too when i made my movie, but if you want any music from legit artists, most labels are all about business. what i mean is that even for a small scale production, it could be waaaay more expensive than you can afford. music rights for a standard length action sports film could hit $10,000 easily.
