Alright I am looking for someone with some experience with obtaining music rights to movies...orrrr not getting rights and not getting sued. I am producing a movie and really don't need to get sued but I want to have some good songs, but I have no budget. Any info would be helpful, thanks.

i think as long as your not selling the videos it doesnt matter... and even if you are i dont think big companies will give a shit anyway or even find out for that matter..

But I am thinking about selling it, but I just dont wanna get sued. If I dont sell it then its not an issue.

you can use 10 or 30 seconds of the song w/o permission.

Try e-mailing some of the bands, not their record companies or their producers but the bands themselves, you might be suprised, go for little bands or less well known ones, they'd probably be stoked for ya to use their music.

technically, if you distribute under a certain amount of videos, you dont have to pay for the rights. or you could just poach all the songs like royalty

Mammoth, I won't by distributing too many, do you have any idea what that number is or where I could find it?

i say dont worry about rights. you wont get in any trouble unless your distibuting like 20,000 + videos

tim, you gotta talk to the record companies or the band's managers. the record labels are the one's that own the rights to music and those are the guys that will sue you!

Movie should be coming out late spring, early summer. Get ready for it. It's going to be for sale for really cheap. Probably no more than $10. Check out the video clips I have uploaded if your looking for a tastey morsel.

Music rights is one of the hardest parts of making a movie. If you are seriously considering making something that has a remote chance of getting distributed by a distributor, then you'll need to get rights from all the bands. No distributor will look at your stuff until all the legal crap is taken care of. I would look into getting some local talent or small time bands. Go through the bands themselves. You can check out www.bmi.com and find out some usefull info.

Check out Omen Productions

Local and small bands are key because they are cheap. I wouldn't worry to much about selling the video unless you're doing magazine advertisments and make it out to be a big deal. I dount anyone would wana sue you over a few cents a tape for 100 tapes or however many you make. Isn't cost effective till about the 20,000+ tapes that dave mentioned.

If you really wana be legit for some reason (experiance or practice) you need to write up contracts, pay lawers to look them over and correct them, then contact the band managers or labels and ask them if they are interested. Some just won't be and it sucks because you wana use the song and then you are nervious to just steal it because you asked and were denied. So either go all or nothing.

man local bands would be the ones asking you to be in it for promotion.
