Music playing devices and skiing ?

so i've had terrible luck taking my ipods skiing (ya i know terrible idea..... i've went through a 4g,20g,30g because of it probably ) but i heard the reason those have gotten ruined was because they all contain hard drives. I was thinking of getting a 2G because the use flashdrives or something ? i'm not very tech savy so i may be wrong there.... but is that true if i get a player that uses a flash drive versus a hard drive i should be alright ?

Yeah, hard dives have moving parts, so skiing + moving parts isn't too good. The (iPod) Nanos and Touch have whats called a "solid state drive", which is basically no moving parts, so you can do whatever and it wont skip a beat :)

Sansa clips are chronic as fuck, cheaper than Shuffles and they have a screen. Like $50 for a 2GB, I love mine.

If you like ipods/itunes, get a 1 gig shuffle or even one of the older models of the shuffles. You can probably get one on ebay for under 25$. I'm so accustom to itunes, i wouldn't want to use anything else, and like stated before, shuffles are cheap and replacable. Just set up a playlist the night before you hit the shred and you're all set.

just so u know if the 4 gig u broke was a nano than it did not have a hard drive. All nanos and touches run on flash....only the classic has a hard drive

No idea if they sync with iTunes, I use WinAmp, but I'd be willing to bet they do. And I can almost guarantee they're Mac compatible, they're designed to directly compete with Shuffles.

wait, your saying that touch's dont have hard drives?! wonderful news i always though that nanos and shuffles were the only ones..

I really want to say the iTouch and iPhone are solid state flash drives. I'm almost 100% sure on this. HOWEVER, the screens probably wouldn't stand up too well against hard landings.

how have you broken hard drive ones skiing? i keep mine in a chest pocket in my jacket ive never done anything to it. the only ipod ive ever broken i broke because a water bottle flooded my backpack, end of ipod

You've been mad lucky dude. iPods break fucking constantly. I took the most painstaking care with one of my old ones, brought it skiing twice, both times in my chest pocket with no park skiing and I fell very rarely. My friends gave me shit about how good care I took care of it. Broke in four months of use. My other one I was less careful with, took it skiing a bunch (still in the chest pocket though), brought it with me everywhere, it lasted eleven months, but still... The HD ones are so prone to breaking it's ridiculous, it's just a matter of time. Flash is the way to go.

^ huh i've had a 30 g for like 3 years, and i take it with me skiing almost every time. i keep it in my pants pockets, and leave it in there when i ride park. i've never had a problem with it breaking, it still works great

I donno, man. Mine have always sucked and I've heard similar horror stories from nearly everyone I know who has owned one.

get a shuffle, they are amazing for skiing, battery last about a day and a half of skiing, small so they are less likely to get broken and they are cheap even if you do break them

ya my friend takes like his 2nd gen 20g with all the time and he never has any problems with it, i don't know how but i've had sssshhhhhiiiittttt luck with taking mine skiing, and now that i have an 80g i'm not taking that chance again .

hard drives are pretty easy to break...because they have moving parts, even stepping off of a curb too hard could break them

yeah me too. i

i have had my shuffle for like 5 years and have had not one problem skiing with it, even droppiung it in the snow. just blew on it and kept riding.

hahaha wow. i have a 30 and honestly, i dont take care of it at all, yet it has survived wonderfully.

Shuffle is the best idea. Light. Cheap. Battery lasts for ever. Difficult to change songs so you wont be tempted to bust it out every 30 seconds to go to the next song. I broke one, but had the warranty so got a new one for free

i had 15 gig second generation (previous to the click wheel) that lasted until this fall when some crackhead stole it. i rode with it for a few seasons too, until it became useless in the cold. the biggest problem i had with it was when said crackhead broke my car window to get to it. lame.

shuffel sounds like the way to go... but i got an 80 gig ipod and never have any problems... except seems the click wheel dosnt work good in the cold idk if its just mine tho

how are the nano's? i dont like not being able to have a screen to switch between reggae and rap or classic rock pump up depending on my mood. any1 have experience with the nano's or know if they are flash or whatnot?

I don't even have time to explain the millions of reasons why the shuffle is the best ski music device. But it is so just buy it and don't ask questions.

A nano would actually be sick too since you could have some more control over what playlists you listen to, but with your track record the shuffle is probably the way to go.

yeah, i know exactly what you mean, i have a 40 and its been great so far

the only problem i had with a previous ipod was with my nano.. and thats because the screen broke, but i got a replacement, so no big problem there even.

I think the best device is a phone, I'm using my Nokia 6500 and it's perfect. When you use your phone you don't have multiple devices in your jacket, which makes moving easier.....or something along those lines...

yeah i got a shuffle, its real nice cuz thanks to the continuous or shuffle feature you can still choose your songs, and you dont have to have any worries of breakin the screen or something, they are tanks. also if you some how find a way to break it, its not as big of deal cuz its only 50 not like 250 or somethin for a video

Yep I 'm the same, dropped mine on concrete (the road) once and put a large dent in the side and it still works fine (have it in a solid clear plastic case now though). Only problem with it has been the headphone jack which has given out twice (just get it replaced by a friend).

shuffles are awsome ii sed to have a shuffle then i bought a touch broke it

went back to shuffle went wakeboarding with it in my pocket still works perfectly its sick

i have this little thing called a creative zen thing or something its pretty sick, really small little black shuffler, never had any problems, especially when my friends ipods are dying from the cold sucking their battery mine stays alive.

Pretty much any small mp3 player with a flash memory is gonna be best as it has no moving parts, if you don't want to go for the shuffle there are several brands (Sansa is the most common i think) that make players with this type of memory.

If you're looking for a good deal check out http://www.woot.com they post 1 deal on day on electronics and they have cheap mp3 players up all the time, check http://sellout.woot.com as well
