Music of Our Generation

So, (with a few exceptions), the 80's were total crap, the 90's were pretty drab, and now every band sounds exactly like Nickelback, or worse. Not to mention, any band that has made it to the top has usually been one hit, and then dissappeared. So what went wrong? Why do we lack bands that are extremely talented with harmonies and melodies and sick guitar riffs or meaning and soul? Such as Allman Brothers Band, Eagles, Stevie Ray, Dire Straights etc.

I think the sound from the 70's on has been pretty dry, like Nirvana, Green Day, Nickelback, to name a few. Don't get me wrong, I like those bands, but I also like good music. So what are your thoughts? Other than 'Ur a loser' or 'RAP 4 LIFE JIGGA' or some stupid remark. Does anyone agree with me who actually knows a thing or two about music?

Also, list some one hit wonders from these decades, it's probably the only time you'll hear their names again.

I went to take a piss and the elastic in my pants snapped back and crushed my balls against my leg and now i can't have kids

idiot. you're not looking in the right places. it isn't the music thats changed its the record business. they have gotten extremely good marketing music. the term 'hook' is now common knowledge. if you want to know why nasty guitar style went out, you can thank the hair bands. what you're looking at now is bands that grew up with that being in style, thats their influences. learn to embrace other styles of music.

you want good music? stop watching mtv and listening to your corny ass syndicated radio channels. go to www.pitchformedia.com

i shall proceed and continue to rock the mic

P-JO: 'where do you come up with this shit? I mean its not shit, but is there some book I need to read?'

^ my typo, it should be: www.pitchforkmedia.com

thanks man...but dont diss me

Theres a lot of good music out in this generation, just not as much as compared to the oldies. I didn't really realize it until now but all I listen to is music from the 70s and 80s. Except Kanye West, thats a good cd.

the 60's and 70's were absolutely phenominal in terms of rock, the 80's and in terms of punk and 93 in terms of hip hop. Rock is really not being progressed very well because people aren't progressing it. I mean i dig jet but they're just recycling whats been done. I love all music and i'm the biggest classic rock fan ever, but the hip hop coming out of this generation is pure innovation. The madvillian disc is absolutely phenomenal and revolutionary, 36 chambers and illmatic are also albums i consider up there with highway 61 revisited, the white album and are you experienced.

well, back then, there were plenty of terrible bands as well, its jsut that we dont remember them cause most of us werent alive or old enough to really appreciate good music. we are exposed to all the shite music these days cause we all have radios and TVs, we are constantly being bombarded with teenie bopper style tunes and a huge lack of truly talented artists.

although we do have a ton of outstanding artists right now, its jsut that peoples tastes are so diverse that people may not reconize it. rappers, there are people like Masta Ace, who lyricaly speaking, is a genious, and he also knows how to make incredible beats to go along with those lyrics. same thing can be said about Mos Def

metal bands such as Dream Theater, i realize that they have been around since the late 80s, but they are still making incredible music today. there are still good bands out there, like The Darkness, Sam Roberts, Dave Matthews, and many other rock and roll groups.

one of the key problems with the music industry today is Pop music, with catchy lyrics and stimulating tunes, they will always get stuck in peoples heads, no matter how much we hate the songs.

i think the music industry is in better condition than you give credit for. its jsut the mainstream artists that are lacking in talent or diversity

rock IS progressing, just not mainstream stuff. i personally don't like jet very much but you can't say that its just recycling the music of the past. that is called influences. look at the stones early work - its very bluesy, their shit came from stuff that had been done before. and for all of you zepplin fans that don't know your shit, they were accused again and again for ripping off old blues compositions - they got a lot of flack from music critics. there are progressive bands out there, you just need to look in the right places.

I just don't like the sound of the new stuff. Also the 60's and 70's had just more amaziing bands, don't lie to me. As well as your mainstream shit theres som many fucking amazing bands, Little Feat, COuntry Joe and the Fish, Quicksilver Messanger Service, the Byrds, The Allman brotherrs, etc...

Like so many dope records man

Neil young alone was in like 4 or 5 sick bands

Oy yeah and what about the traveling willburies? Thats a rock stardom wet dream. There can never be a band that great again. whos going to do it now? CHad croager and raine from OLP and maybe j timberlake? NO

i thought the mid 90's were great for alternative rock

because the music industry is very similar to communism, record companys wont put out a single unless it sounds like a certain thing and thats why if you buy an album the single wont sound like ANY of the other tracks.

Hardcore drug abuse.....so hot right now. -west

haha the traveling willberries. the cover information on the band is seriously one of the funniest things to come out of music besides spinal tap. that being said, it was a cool idea, but their music just doesn't really do as much for me as i thought it would. that is just a personal preference however. a lot of really good music in the 'jack johnson genere' (for lack of a better term) has come out of the 90's and the first half of this decade. stuff like g. love, ben harper, postal service, and many others have made seriously awesome albums, and the fact that you half to look a little harder to find them just puts the icing on the cake. i wonder what 'the band' of our generation will be when we tell our kids. for my parents it was the beatles, who do you think is our top band?

Toothless, I completly agree with you. Ive probably only stuck by Aerosmith-their old shit, that is. My boyfriend does underground hip hop (Adept Collective...east coast has a better chance of knowing who they are, they arnt big though) and everything that he and his crew does is like inspirational and not like, 'Yo, imma fuck you ho, nigga!' cause thats not fucking music. thats people thinking that theyre good, but its not positive energy. Just because you can cuss, doesnt mean you have to. No one wants to hear that shit.

fuck the 80's ruled, what about Metallica, revolutionizing the industry, or Rush, or as for 90's what about symphony X or Dream Theatre?! these guys rock and are the best and most talented in the world

Yeah the 80's kicked ass, Butt rock kicks ass, and if you say it all sounds the same, its cause it all kicks ass

ah the shins... how i love them... radiohead... thats all that really needs be said... they are pretty great.

-you think you can take us on... you and your cronies-

When I think of Radiohead, I think of Eric Cartman making Scott Tenerman eat his parents at the chili con cook off.

alpine cowboy: You were naming bands that you can really tell that they have influences from other bands, Correct?

Those are all good bands that get a lot of flack for sounding similiar to preteseors. Before I knew of pitchforkmedia I felt so down on music, I was listening to a lot of hiphop for the reasons a bove, I thought they were progressing with more diverse sounnds, but there are a lot of great indie bands out there. Pitchforkmedia.com and undergroundhiphop.com are great sites to find very good music.

Definetly everyone should check out Madvillian.

^rephrase that question, i'm confused. yeah all you need is pitchfork and a good record shop. download a few songs first and then go out and buy the albums because those bands deserve to be supported. downloading should be for singles from mediocre albums or less. if a band can't make a tight album then they deserve to be eaten alive by illegal downloading. if an album is good and you only download a few songs then you lose sight of the musicians flow or theme.

how can so much stupid fit into one sentence: 'i have already attempted, but the cross wouldnt lite and the cops were coming so we left, but this summer im gonna burn a 15ft cross in this family's yard on 4th of july, dressed as britains to make it more fun.' - DENALI44

you were saying that interpol and the yeah yeah yeahs are good bands that have distinct characterists that can be found in bands that came before them?

If thats what you were saying I agree with you.

And on the downloading subject, that is exactly what I do, your thoughts are right in line with my ideas. Plus it is awsome having the cd and all the artwork that comes with it and you get the album in its best quality and in the way they wanted you to hear it straight from the album:no unwanted remixes or inconsitent sound.

60,70 awesome, 80s sucked ass, early 90s ok, mid and late 90s good, right now it all right

television and commercialism killed music. these days being a good musician is about looking good and being marketable to the 12-21 demographic.

i thought the 80's were tight. electronic music is heading back in that direction and i'm diggin that stuff. 80's fashion is making a huge comeback. i might have been a little kid but i had a pretty damn good time. besides, 80's hip hop, punk and some new wave were pretty cool.

ya i meant more mainstream stuff by the way..not allll music is shit..but most on the radio is..and anythign on much music can eat my shit

NO ONE IS POSTING ONE HIT WONDERS THO!!!

I went to take a piss and the elastic in my pants snapped back and crushed my balls against my leg and now i can't have kids

JET, they arn't a one hit wonder yet but they will be.

I think the Darkness also, they may try to make more music but only a select crowd will listen to it.

I do and don't agree with the following statment: I was in a record store and my and two of the employess were talking about Wu-Tang and one of the employees was not a big fan and he claimed Wu-Tang to be a one hit wonder!

Now I told him that, that was true in the sense that they only had one radion hit, but they are in no way just someone hit wonder. He agreed with me and the other employee after we laid an onslaught on him about how the Wu are one of the greatest Rap groups ever.

Rock one-hit wonders:

Devo, The guys that made 'eye of the Tiger', here are a whole bunch more

^no the darkness have musical talent, they are widely acclaimed by music critics. i hope jet never comes back, bad decision to let mtv whore their song. if they were good by now they would have produced a second single. wu tang is an empire, theres no way you can call them one hit wonders - the derogatory sense that is most commonly applied.

how can so much stupid fit into one sentence: 'i have already attempted, but the cross wouldnt lite and the cops were coming so we left, but this summer im gonna burn a 15ft cross in this family's yard on 4th of july, dressed as britains to make it more fun.' - DENALI44

The darkness, are a kick arse band. Jet are still allright but will be forgoten aobut sooner rather then later

-------------------

'If your not living on the edge youre taking up to much sapce'

jet did come out with a second single. and to me, theyre one of those bands that you really like for the first 10 times or so, then it gets ridiculously overplayed and gets boring

the 80's were key for the evolution of music. not only did it produce some great retro tunes, the hair bands paved the way for bands like soundgarden, nirvana, pear jam and others. i think the 90's were mostly all about the evolution of hip hop and punk but towards the end of the 90's someone dumbass thought it would be good to combine hip hop and rock which was god awful at the time but as it progressed it steadily improved itself. no we're into the age of pop-punk or pop-emo stuff with a liberal helping of garbage teenage girls singing. now that the youngins all like this new music it's popping up every where, tv, radio everywhere!!!!

Wu-Tang is most definetly an empire. The record guy is who said that wu-tang was the one hit wonder. They have one had one single to ever play on the radio, or at least one that I know of.
