so i want to get into the mountain biking scene since everyone says its like skiing on wheels and i need a summer hobby. so my question for you is what type of mountain bike should i get?

well i live in MN so theres no real mountains but there are a few trails through the woods with some gnarly rocks and such

If your looking at doing a little of everything but dont have big downhills and freeride stuff and are going to concentrate on urban riding you should look at the cannondale chase 2 or 3, giant stp, or the kona shred, I've ridden them all but the kona, and they are good bikes. If you plan to do more xc riding but still want a bike that can go anywhere i would look at the giant yukon or the trek 4900, If you have a little more money for a go anywhere bike and want to go with full suspension I would look at the giant reign, the giant trance, the trek remedy, or the kona dawg, I have ridden or know people who have ridden all of these bikes and say good things about them, the only realy difference will be with frame geometry, so look around and see what is the most comfortable for you, and look at what you are going to be doing wiht this bike.

for a hardtail id say a dirt jump/freeride bike.. still rock solid on the trails but can take whatever you throw at em freeride wise

hahaha, those things are fucking insane...check out one of the p series bikes. or hard rock comp or pro desc. solid shit. or just go to the shop and get a freeride hardtail bike.

dont get a fricken rock hopper , those things are practically usless. seriously, not very good for hard core xc and dont really have the geometry for a good dirt jump bike, so got with with a p2 or p3. those are pretty good. theres always road, go to road tinga, and youll enjoy it. or get a kona cowan

i've been askin around everywhere. you have to figure out what kinda bikin you want to do and stuff. i'm gonna start bikin this year to.

Def. Kona makes all different types of bikes, Diamondbacks make some sick bikes, k2s are usually good. To get a Decent bike w/ good components you should think around $1000 (w/ disc brakes, w/o would be less).

insteaad of everyone suggesting dif. bikes, ill help yah a bit more.

like said, you really have to know what you wanna do. if you dont, go borrow an XC bike, and go ask a friend to take you on an XC ride. then see bout riding some lite downhill, and maybe some urban or something. my guess, is if you are into newschool skiing, freeriding will be your focus. and that doesnt mean you cant still go ride a bit of XC, or street, etc.

i would highly reccomend buying a hardtail, as they teach you proper riding techniques, and really force you to be a better rider. plus, they can be very versitile. they are also cheap, and alot easier to maintain (suspension brings alot more headaches than just keeping pivots tight)

one of the most important factor in a bike is the head angle. this is the most important, but not the only factor deciding how it rides. the steeper the angle, the more maneuverable at slow speeds it will be. if your plannin on DH or real high speed riding, a slacker H.A. will make it more stable. if you can get something with an adjustable travel fork, from about 4-7 inches of travel, or something in that range, you will be able to ride just about everything fairly well. Check out MTBR.com, as there are shitloads of reviews, forums, etc. but remeber, plan on spending at LEAST 600 bucks for a fairly used bike, and min. 1000 for a new one. but if you can afford it, spend the money if you can.

dude those are real high end bikes, id say a p series if you wana spend a little more but a kona or norco would be good for a beginer
