MTB recommendations for a bmx'er

Anyone have advice for a "cheap" hard tail mountain bike? Bike will see tame- moderate single track use in the midwest... Very little mountain bike experience as far as sizing and trends go. I am far from a bike newbie as I raced bmx for ten years. Also, I am just shy of 6 0 and about 155.
Looking for advice on sizing, ,models, and maybe a bit on components... would also prefer to go the complete route as I don't feel like tracking down pieces parts.

Define "cheap"...

Also, what are mid-west trails like? Smooth and feature-less or are there rocks, roots and small drops?

The style of the trails are really going to make a big impact on how much bike to go with.
 
there are so many types of bikes out there. you said you were looking for a singletrack/xcountry bike kinda so like a 20" frame would be good. i have a 19" and im 5ft 10in tall. and 195lbs. for brands ive got a kona. specialized, santacruz, are good in my experience but its personal preferance. you should also look into biking cult. id say look into full suspension too cuz there are so many light bikes out there, and id only use a hardtail for like dirtjumping but you bmx so u know all bout that. look into demoing bikes as well if you are able to.
 
Single track from what I have seen around here is a mix of hard pack clay and a bit of mud. Very few rocks, drops, jumps.
I am looking to spend under $500
 
Yeah, midwest varies alot. I live in minnesota and there is fast single track, to single track with roots and drops

I use a KHS dj300 for everything though, I love hardtail feel its faster and more agile
 
Under $500 is ging to put you at entry-level respectable bikes, but based off what you are saying about the trails, it will be plenty enough for those types of trails.
 
p.2 cr-mo would fit the style.. but at a greater cost. However, the cr-mo would def be worth looking into.
 
ummm i got a Giant Rincon, great bike for around $400. Really light, has some nice forks, and disc breaks too
