So i seem to be beating the shit out of my bike(and body), and i want to start upgrading some componenets so i dont have to hike out of anymore trails.

I ride a 2010 Stumpjumper FSR Comp, and while i dont ride DH, i do ride pretty aggressivly. I just folded my front rim and crashed super hard today, and then had to hike out 5 miles and 2000+ feet.

First, what wheel would you recommend(its a 2.3" Purgatory tire?) as a replacement?

Second, what other components Should i really think about upgrading, ie what tends to break often. I am much more concerned about durability, than light weight.

And lastly, how much will this be costing me?

Thanks!

looking like ima get this. how much sould a new spoke set cost go along with this wheel? or can i use the broken wheels spokes(specialized)?

If bent your rim like I think you did your gonna need new spokes. They really don't cost that much. You could problably find a good spoke set for like 30-50 bucks.

i have a maxis ardent on my front and for rim it really depends what price range you want to be in. i am a shimanno fan so most any thing shimano

Look in pink bike buy/sell for the wheel, or better yet buy mine.

And you can waste a ton of money upgrading bikes, my advice is keep riding, and if you notice you don't like the way something feels or performs start reading reviews on replacement stuff

If you want bomb proof rims, get some Mavic 823's. They are reasonably light for what they are and you will have trouble hurting them. I've seen them take some gnarley beatings and still be straight.

I need to be able to climb well with these though. how much does rim weight affect the bikes rolling and climbing ability?

also, how expensive are the?

823s are hefty tubeless DH rims, and there's no need for that on a trail bike. I use Stans ZTR flows on my AM bike (Ibis Mojo) and they are awesome. I've laid some beatings on them and they are still solid. Equally as important as the rim itself is the quality of the build of the entire wheel. Even the best rims will warp and hop if they are shittily laced/tensioned. Go to a good shop.

Hahahahaha.... yeah bro, if you taco your wheel, don't worry about getting a a new one, all you need is about 30 bucks worth of new spokes.

And if you're breaking stuff as much as you claim, you're not riding aggressively, you just suck at riding. Get the cheapest, heaviest and burliest components you can buy and you'll be fine. God knows anything else won't be worth it when you're learning how to use that stump jumper...

Sorry I didn't read what the OP said before this. Mackey, sorry about that.

But really that just reaffirmed that the OP is not an aggressive rider and instead needs cheap, heavy and durable components because he will most likely fall and break more shit down the road.

Haha, weight is not an issue at your level of riding. It will not make a difference that you will even notice. Also rim weight has nothing to do with rolling resistance as that is completely dependent on what tire you have on your rim.

Go onto pinkbike.com

Problem solved.

Could you go into a little more depth with this? I'm not saying I agree or disagree, just kind of a strange concept. Can't someone ride aggressively without being a great rider? I know skiers with no skill but way more balls than anyone else and I would say they ski very aggressively. And how would being a shitty rider destroy components more than a great rider besides crashes and casing jumps which both do.

do not use the old spokes and if you get somebody to build the wheel they should take care of the spokes for you. believe it or not there is actually quite a variety of spokes out there. should cost roughly a buck a spoke

Maybe go with something like a Mavic Crossmax SLR or Stans Flows as suggested.

Rotational weight is something you want to keep to a minimum if possible and it will have a decent impact on your climbing ability if it is a long sustained climb.

It doesn't take much skill to ride newer model bikes from top to bottom on runs due to the insane tech advances. To compare it to skiing is useless because its a shit ton easier to have balls to ski "aggressively".

Other skills that contribute to riding smoothly and aggressively such as weight transfer, picking out lines, when to compress the suspension, etc. all comes with experience whereas in skiing you kinda just rip er and go, especially since its way more forgiving and a completely different activity. Judging by the questions he's asking he's not experienced at riding and it takes quite the fuck up to taco a wheel either from doing something insane, by riding a section of trail way beyond your abilities (he said he doesn't do DH so that counts out anything really technical), or by doing something common like casing a jump, which this doesn't sound like such an event since it was his front wheel that he taco-ed... unless he really fucked up on a jump.

Its not a bad thing, its just that he's not being completely honest which could lead to him investing into something that isn't what he needs or more than what he needs... It doesn't really matter though because like I said, pinkbike.com is where he wants to go for the best answers as long as he's being honest.

OK. totally understand now and I do agree for the most part. Pinkbike is great, and honesty truly is the key to that site

when was i not honest??

Regardless, Its true i tend to have a skiing mindset when riding bikes, because the terrain and speed is so much mellower than what i normally ski.

But if you dont push yourself a little, how are you going to progress. Why arent you trying to hype me up on biking. Instead you speak down to me, and almost with disgust.

Could really shitty rims or loose spokes have anything to do with it?

Dude your a bitch. All you ever do on here is talk out of your ass & argue just for the sake of being right. Do you know OP? Do you know his riding style? Or are you just arrogant all knowing cunt face?

Whoa no need to take offense there bud. Not like you've ever been a total cunt to anyone before. I did say in my post, if you don't skim shit like a whimpie poodle, I said there was nothing wrong with being a n00b.
