Mt Ruapehu

Heading up right now to nab some of the pre season snow. Hopefully grab enough to set up a ghetto PVC pipe down at the house in raetihi.

Next dump of snow and I'll be down there with two PVC pipes

Next dump anyone can come for a jam with us if you're willing to help shape a rail/jump/whatever we build. Could be sick if a bunch of people bring any kind of rail or jib feature to set up!

First skin up on Sunday was pretty awesome some pillow powder drops were had.

Could only skin up on the snow otherwise your foot would sink down up to your knee in powder.

I see the rails hiding up on the giant cafes top deck.

Should organize something around the Saturday of the 13th try and set up some rails if there is snow to be had on Turoa either in the park or near the giant, something with a decent run up onto it. Anyone keen just post up or hit me up

are all the features up there just lying around?

We store the rails on the decks for the summer so they are off the ground and don't get buried when the snow comes. If they are on the ground they end up getting frozen to it and are real bitch to get off. If you do end up moving them can you please put them back and they are fucking heavy so you would probably need a 5 or more people to move them also take a wire brush up with you, the rails get a bit of surface rust on them that needs taking off so they slide good.

I was going to say, don't they normally shift them with a groomer? They look pretty weighty for the most part.

I think I'm gonna skip opening weekend this year, maybe go riding in Rotorua instead... will be up most weekends after that though.

Hopefully this latest snowfall locks up into a nice solid chunk of ice and sets up a relatively even base for the rest to fall on. If we can get through to late June without a big rain event coming and f*cking it all up like last year then I think we will be sorted.

Hey guys, I'm studying abroad in Dunedin and am looking to get a day or two in after exams finish before I go home so I have two questions:

1) Which mountain(s) should I go to? (I'm thinking Cardrona right meow)

2) What's the best shop in wanaka/queenstown to rent some decent park skis and boots?

Cheers!

Went up for a ride around Nga wai heke and at the the top of the lift there is that 200mm rail just sitting in the snow, plenty of snow around it to build. Been an awesome weekend with everyone

The hitchin post one that says "turoa parks"?

Rusty, it isn't the Turoa parks one. It is just a pipe in the ground used it as a rail last year has a semi ledge to it quite close to the bull wheel on the nga wai heke 20 metres to the left of it

Word word i think I know what you're talking about.

Was gonna say you'd need a fuck ton of snow for the other one. That girl was all legs

chur bru anyone know when turoa's opening?

Claimed opening is 27th June. I haven't seen them bring it forward in a long, long time - I think this lines up with the first week of the school holidays?

Who can I expect to be cruising the baby slopes at turoa this weekend?

7.5 million school children and twice that number of irate parents complaining about things.

I think I'll wait until from the Giant Café down is skiiable

I'll probably just build some hikable features of to the side.

A couple rails in the meadow right now, setup looks pretty clean.
Flat bars smooth as. Kinda sticky today but it was hot. I can see the park crew building up at giant in the webcam now

any one know what the plan for the park is yet? its so good having a decent rail in the meadow early season instead of the usual small box

It looks like they've started pushing the "pads" (is that the right word for it?) for some features in the usual spot beside the Giant café.

There weren't any features on them at the weekend, though.

I can ask kris what the deetz are.

I think he's been busy in the shop getting some of the rails cleaned up. New small ish rainbow box in progress.

Probably will have something up as soon as tim can farm enough snow up there.

There's heaps of snow at that altitude by the looks of things. The gut where the jump line usually goes isn't as full as it could be but there's tons of snow for them to play with, I think the cats have all just been busy pushing the trails above the Giant. As of yesterday arvo they hadn't even pushed Big Bowl or the traverse cat track along the top although it looked like someone had got the berm at the bottom done and the exit traverse roughed out, and realistically with the school holidays on I can understand them not putting a huge priority on the park.

So wtf is going on here?

I'm sure I must be missing something.

Someone was saying they had built it too close the Giant offload and it was bottlenecking, ok fair enough move it over but since they closed it straight away and roped it all off... what's going on there? Anyone got the inside word?

Was that park open? Or is it closed for them working on it? I feel like if they closed it because there wasn't enough space going past the giant they would have moved the boo line over more to give the regular skiers more space.

Also is that luke just standing there?

Yes it was open, I heard it mentioned that ski patrol were more concerned about the idea of metal rails underneath the lift line, which is retarded.

Weird, idk then. Seems like they could have just moved the rope and signs down and started the park at features next to the giant. Like run the rope up against the sign and you start on that headwall where the first jump was last year(if there are features below)

That really is a horrible spot though. Even without the park it's a clusterfuck.

The unload of the giant, the cafe, the park, people sitting on their asses, plus people bombing down from snowbird and vertigo. The fact that it's this narrow cat pass wide or just over area for all of that traffic and the giant unload is nuts.

Jesus if it's actually about having a rail under the lift, wtf. There's plenty of other unpleasant stuff you could fall on from a chairlift. Like, say, the ground.

I have often wondered why they don't just push a bunch of snow alongside the Giant offload though, surely it wouldn't be super hard to make that another cat or so wider?

Yeah. It's kin of crazy with how narrow everything is, and how much shit goes on right there.

That spot is sketchy.

I remember snagging a board that came flying down the trail and all the oblivious people sitting facing down hill in the trail would have gotten smoked in another 30 feet.

As above, down rail on the left, flat box on the right, 2 jump line with medium-ish on the right and large-ish on the left.

On Saturday they were still getting the length dialled on the second set, on Friday they were way too short so they pushed them back a bunch overnight and then they were slightly too long unless you really went for it from the first...
