Whenever we drive up to Boyne or Nubs Nob we pass through Mancelona and when going north you can see what is left of Mt. Mancelona. The trails are still visible and you can see some of the lifts.

Does anyone know when it closed? I know it was because there were so many other big places around.

I've been trying to Google it, but can't find much. I found this in a 1958 Sport Illustrated:

"Mt. Mancelona, Mancelona: 4 miles of trails. T bar 1,200/300/814; five

rope tows. New: 3 rope tows; lodge; locker rooms; bar; new trail;

lighting for Friday night skiing; hi-fi skiing music. Reservations: Mt.

Mancelona Ski Club, Mancelona. Snow conditions: HAROLD AXTMANN,

Mancelona, Justice 7-7491."

Let me know if anyone has any info or has been there.

I don't know if anyone else is even interested in this, but I found a bunch of other closed hills in Michigan:

Timberlee Hills - closed 1972

Walden Hills - closed 1974

Holiday - closed 2001 (reopened a few years later by the locals as ski area for underprivileged kids)

Sugar Loaf - closed 2001

ski jump in Munising - closed in the 60's

It would be cool to hike them and take a few runs.

i live in gaylord, 30 or so minutes away and i can't say i've ever heard of it

we do a little bit of kayaking down some of michawae's old hills though, wicked fun

I want to take a long distance scooter trip this summer. maybe i'll ride up there and take some pics.

holiday is aight, don't try poaching there though, not happenin.

sugar loaf was just recently bought by some rich dude (read it in the paper forgot the details) and should be opening back up in the near future.

i always look at mt mancelona when i drive by. one time i mistook it for schuss when i was lost.

briar hill is another. its located in mesick, heard it gets mad pow but haven't hiked it.

Here is an awesome documentary that was done in the spring of 2011. I'm the guy in the Wolf hat. Mt Mancelona has been a favorite hangout in my youth and continues to be one of my favorite places in the world, today. In the "Comments" section of the blog can be found a link to my YouTube channel which has a few videos of my Ski-Lift in action.

.....Enjoy.

I live near sugarloaf and that "rich dude" was a joke, he never bought it, it is still owned by some lady, but she has given some rights to a group of cross country skiers that have been clearing some trails, they are also planning on opening up a tow rope run, should be pretty sweet
