Mt. Hood summer help

For a family vacation this summer my family wants to go to Oregon. It would be during July. We are staying near Mount Adams which is close to Mt. Hood. The original plan was to do some mountain biking and hiking but my parents are open to the idea of also doing some skiing. So, I was wondering if there is a way to do a one day skiing trip. I know Windells is big there but is that just camp where you register and then stay for multiple days? If anyone could give me some clarification on this that would be very helpful.

Additionally, does anyone know of some places in Oregon where my brother and I could learn surfing? I have never done it before but it is definitely something I would be interested in.

Windells is camp only, you won't be able to ride their lane. Mt. Hood has a public park though which was pretty fun when I was there two years ago.

I'm doing a similar trip with my family, actually in July too. I was thinking about going to the public park, which looks good.

Anyone know what/how many features they usually have setup?

I'm not a surfer but my coworker is doing a learn to surf thing at Oswald West park this summer which is near Cannon Beach. There is also a beach called Indian Beach just nort of Cannon Beach. Seems like the Cannon Beach area is the most popular for surfing and there are a lot of surf shops there. The other place that comes to mind for surfing is Pacific City. Pacific City is less busy than Cannon Beach but a bit further from Mt. Adams. There is good camping all along the coast if your family is in to that.

Cannon Beach is definealty the best place to learn how to surf in the summer. You might want to reserve a little early tho. Up on mama hood, she'll be thrivin all year with the nice snowpack we have this year. There will be more than enough features jumps, and the park crew does it good up there. They work there asses and its soon nice.

ANOTHER QUESTION

How is timberline in the summer? Since I would be riding a public park at either Timberline or Mount Hood Meadows how do they compare?

In July Timberline will have the only lift running in Oregon and the only public park on Mt. Hood. Conditions will really depend on the weather when you are out here.

If you want to hike for it other skiing options may be available at Mt. Adams or Mt. Hood but If you want to hike for turns use prudence because real alpine hazards exist.

It really depends on the weather from the start of spring and throughout the winter. Three years ago we had a great winter but the weather turned to be very hot and right after July fourth you were hiking all the way till Windells was over in mid August. Though guaranteed there will be a jump and a good amount of rails to hit. Timberline is the only publicly lift accessed ski terrain in the United States. What time around July are you planning on coming down?

I would recommend taking a lesson if you want to have a good experience, but I can also respect the attitude of just grabbing a board and getting out there, so I'll throw some advice your way.

1) Go to Cannon Beach and rent surfboards (and wetsuits if you dont have them) from Cleanline Surf Shop. Also make sure you get boots, gloves, and a hood if your head gets cold. They will also rent you some soft racks for your car.

Don't rent anything smaller than a 7'2 or you're gonna have a shitty first day.

2) Go south on 101 from Cannon Beach until you get to Oswald West State Park. You'll know you are there when you see a random, long parking lot that is absolutely packed on the side of the road. Pull in there.

3) Get all your shit and hike down the trail that heads towards the beach (the trailhead starts right by the bathrooms at the end of the parking lot). It's about a half mile hike, and don't carry your board like a kook. Welcome to Short Sands, or Shorties.

It is by far the best place to learn how to surf on the Oregon coast because of its super long and mellow sloping beach, but don't hold me to that. You might be there when it is breaking at 6ft and you're gonna have an awful day if you try to get up in the main swell.

4) When you get to the beach, turn right and walk along the top of the beach until you get to the big ass boulders that are right up against the hill opposite the water.

5) Keep all your stuff here, the nice big rocks provide some good shade for any packs, coolers of beer, etc. It will also keep things nice and hidden from anyone trying to snag some beach-goers belongings.

6) Get your wetsuits on, get in the water, stay out of peoples way, AND AVOID THE FAR ENDS OF THE BEACH RIGHT UP AGAINST THE HEADLANDS. Generally, not always, but generally there is a pretty substantial rip that goes along the edge of the rocks, so shoot right for the area that the rest of the people are in, just don't crowd them.

7) Don't leave any trash on the beach.

its honestly fun for a park, usually a handful of rails and rollers or a jump they move higher on Palmer as the snow melts it'll start in mile canyon and work its way up to midway.

if you have any worry about walking on rocks in your boots or dirt or ruining your bases hood isn't fun but if you truly just want to ride its a blast but you can only take so many Palmer bombers before you're lik ok fuck this. So your family might get a bit bored,

Hit public park in the morning, poach windells in the afternoon.
this seems to be the consensus but as of last summer they watch everyone closely and station people at the entrance to the park, shit I got called out cause I didn't have my bracelet when I was on my lunch break working the rope tows.
