Mt. High or Bear?

I am new to Southern California and am looking to do a lot of skiing this winter. I know Bear has a great park, but the mt. high pass is cheap and I think it might be easier to get to from where I live, USC. Which mountain is better? Is Bears park good enough to justify the extra drive and higher cost?

i mostly ride mt high it is closer and more people are willing to drive me there. bears park is better but high has a good park too. it also depends when you plan on going i never go to mt high on weekends because it is horrible.

a big factor is the dive out there. if you like chilling for hours in traffic on the 10 and once again in the mountains, go to bear. the mountains alright, but its far as fuck and can take 3+ hours to get back on weekends/ with traffic.
high is a little cut straight out of Pasadena, so you can avoid traffic on the big freeways by driving straight though the mountain. judging on their forum on mthigh.com, they seem like a bunch of broke ass so cal snowboarders that congest the mountain.
i ditched the bear pass this year to give high a shot, mainly cuz the night riding 7 days a week.

I had a pass to both last year. They both are the same driving distance for me so that wasn't a factor. Looking back, I think I enjoyed riding Bear more. They seem to have more variety of terrain and the park just seems to flow better. Mt High I feel like somebody threw a jib grenade on the mountain and they're jibs everywhere, although they do have some sick features. As for the jumps, I did like Mt highs Triple Air line on Chisolm. It's super smooth and is the main reason I'd go back to High. But for me, Bear just is funner to ride, has the beach bar to drink at, and the terrain just seem more open and flowing when you ride. Plus there's hotter chicks at Bear.

Mt. High's community is probably some of the greatest people I have met. We have BBQ's, Rail Jams, parties... So much fun.
If I had seen this sooner I would have invited you out last night. It was our annual bowling and boobies event. We had around 45 people show. Ate at hooters, almost got kicked out, went bowling, sang karaoke. Too much fun. Bear is the better resort, but the people and drive and loyalty to Mt. High personally makes it more worth it to go to High.

I am liking all this positive feedback about mt. high. Is their park lit for night riding? I am happy to hear their jumps are good. How big is their biggest jump? Either way, I am from Minnesota so I am going to be fine with anything. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah the park at High is lit. The night skiing there is actually pretty sick. The biggest jump at bear is prolly 45....and thay may be stretching it. They had a triple line set up for the US Freeskiing Open last year and it was pretty sweet....but I still like the Triple Air line set up at High.

Word on the street is that in march/april.. Big Bear is going to be building some epic ridiculously huge jumps for late season film crews... (I hear 70's and 80 footers).

Haha. I'm from Minnesota too. Once you go to High/Bear, Buckhill and Hyland will feel like a bunny hill.
The jumps at high aren't huge. I know they get pretty decent towards spring though when they have spring fest and the Kawasaki triple air.
Mammoth is great though for a weekend drive. Last year there were 2 80 foot jumps and many more jumps that I would probably die on if I attempted.
Check out Mt. Baldy if you get a chance. $20 tickets (possibly cheaper) if you pick them up at ski dazzle. Just make sure you only buy like 2, cause there are probably only 5 great days there a year.

The one time I had a fantastic day skiing Baldy, I was about 17 or 18? years old.. and that place was absolutely SOCKED in worse than I had ever seen before... but holy shit.. the snow was fresh, and the terrain was absolutely awesome. I couldnt see 10 feet in front of me, but I had so much fun - especially in the steeeep and tight trees. So technical, and so fun. I'm glad I had my shortass pocket rockets on that day...

(I was so stoked when I finally broke those POS's later that year)
