Mt. Bike Recommendations

I will be a freshman at the U of U next fall, I was wondering what Bike you guys would recommend for the canyons bike park and the I-Street Park. Is a Full Down Hill bike needed for the canyons?

Just some info on me. I would say I am a advanced rider if that changes any thing, and have ridden in Whistler and Colorado So i am not new to Mt. Biking I just don't know as much about the equipment as I do with skiing

Thank and hope to see you guys out there

If all you are going to be doing is riding Canyons and I Street, I would get something with 180 mm of travel.

If you are living in the dorms though, I would recommend something in the 160 mm range with a dual ring setup in the front. That way you can still pedal up to Bobsled and I Street and it can also handle the downhill.

I ride a full on DH rig at Canyons and it's definitely overkill, to the point that it actually hinders me in a few spots. Look into something along the lines of a Giant Faith... something single crown with 6-7 inches would be perfect. Even if you ride DH at Deer Valley there are only a couple trails that a true DH rig is nice for. Get something more freeride oriented that can pedal decently and endure the occasional uphill. Be sure to check out Road to Arcylon as well, possibly my favorite trail out here.

i'll sell you a 2010 scott voltage long frame with marzocchi roco RC WC coil 2011 and extras like headset for $400, got some sunline flat bars 760mm and an easton havoc 50mm stem I'd include cheap as well, also got some azonic outlaw wheels that i'd include with decent tires for another $150. i've got some other components kicking around too i'd sell real cheap, you'd be good to go with a fork, brakes and some other small stuff.

set up at 180mm travel. perfect for canyons, bobsled, i street, LCC, and even the crest trail if you don't mind a bit of a haul, i can ride the whole thing minus puke hill at a good pace.

Utah pretty much only has super mellow smooth stuff that is fine on a 160mm or 180mm bike, then a handful of gnarly dh trails that are hard to find and require a legit dh bike. So if you don't plan on getting into those I'd go for a smaller single crown for sure, a demo 7 would probably be the perfect do it all gravity bike for Utah. And like Kyle said, for the dorms get a granny gear up front for sure so you can fuck around in the foothills and ride up to bobsled easy.

If you do want a legit dh trails you can buy my demo 8 though :) It's definitely overkill at canyons, but at 38 lbs it's plenty light still and jumps awesome.

speaking of dh bikes, i have a friend selling a year old Canfield Jedi with a super awesome build on it for 3000. he is joining the air force, so if anyone is looking, let me know.

Get a slightly longer travel slopestyle-esque bike for utah. The most fun bike I've ever had here was my Transition BottleRocket. Anything over 150mm is overkill, unless you're a hack or like to purposely monster truck shit without finding the right line. That being said, I ride the same type bikes in Whistler and would generally rather ride those than a full DH.
