MSU film program

Is anybody currently in the program/been in it? I'm considering doing it next year but I want to hear some opinions first. I visited a couple months ago and it looked pretty sick.
 
Im starting my freshmen year there in the fall and im taking the film and photography major. Can't wait to see what its like. I also visited MSU in June and their film department looked really good.
 
the film program at MSU is actually quite good. i have a few friends who are film majors here and if you don't have your shit together and actually work hard you won't make the film gate. so yea, work hard and you'll do good
 
The MSU film program has great connections in the film industry, its not a bad place to be a film major. Tons of the film Alumni have jobs down in LA, some work in Bozeman (like the toy soldiers guys) but some of them are still loafing around working at restaurants.
 
Definitely a good program. Not super hands on at all in the first year. Very Hollywood based it seemed to me. I made the gate and then switched majors. Couldn't handle theater class and only making a couple short (15-30 second) films my first whole year.
 
How bad is the theater class? It's not something I think I would like but I didn't think taking it would be a big deal.

And if you don't make many videos, what do you do the first year?
 
You should be filming stuff on your own. Its the same for an engineering major, you don't get to design and build anything till basically your senior year except at a theoretical or basic level. You learn process and techniques first, then you apply what you learn. Your freshman year you aren't supposed to know anything about film.
 
Recent grad from the film program. I def enjoyed my experience. You are really rewarded for what you put in.. Theater, acting, pro design classes were never my bag but that's no reason to not go. The last 2 years I think I worked on 15 films. Film school is the place to make mistakes and surround yourself with likeminded people. I'd say you learn the most talking shit about movies with friends. I ABSOLUTELY would not be as passionate about film making without it. It's also pretty easy to find some commercial gigs around Bozeman. Best advice I could give is jump on as many senior/ junior film set as possible. Much more important than your grades. its sort of a joke. if you know whats up before you get here and are extremely self motivated you will probably be all right. if not well, in both the film and photo program you can go your entire college career with your thumb up your ass and putting out whack shit
 
Was going to make a thread about it but I saw this one. I just got accepted into the photography option for next fall, how is that program?
