MSP is behind the times

not to mention unbelievably repetitive. i watched CLAIM, and its the exact same as The Hit List and every other ski movie theyv done, but with a new theme and one or two new tricks that werent in last years msp movie, but were in smaller productions like 2 or 3 years ago. talk about lethargic progression

Have you ever thought that all ski film production companies are not the same? Do you think everyone wants to watch ark segments the whole time? MSP is doing what they do and keeping it consistent and I believe that is why they are one of the best film companies. I'm not saying that other film companies are worse. Personally, MSP isn't one of my favorites, but I don't discredit them for what they do. In the past, all of their films have had such a good vibe...leading everybody to want the life that those skiers live. Don't hate and disrespect, they're good at what they're doing and that is why they do it. If you don't like it, buy a different film, but like mentioned don't hate, because they are good. Better yet, why don't YOU make a film that's "AHEAD OF THE TIMES"...

besides the whistler jump sessions and pep in the hit list, i really don't like how much they slow everything down it gets super boring to me.

So, you've got a problem with MSP doing their thing the same from year to year, and yet you probably don't have a problem (or haven't opened your eyes to it yet) with every other company out their trying to make the same movie--a skiing version of a Mack Dawg film. Which is worse?

There are so many guys editing the same way and so many dollies bumping into each other out there to get that Mack Dawg shot that it is the MSP movies that are now looking different from everything else (Nimbus excluded).

MSP does what it does and it obviously works for them and the thousands of others that buy their films.
Look at Warren Miller films... they do the same thing year after year and have the best numbers when it comes to sales.

that is really true....

and i mean at least there's some diversity inbetween production companys...

lastly it shouldnt matter that you dont like the movies, just keep it to your self and dont buy one..

Focused=Yearbook=SHit List=Push=Seven Sunny Days=Claim

Ski movie 3 was the end of the days of msp being really good. now they make the same movie every year. Im going to go watch sm3 now. its sick.

will wesson in turbo does some crazy shit. its amazing. and tom wallisch. level 1 makes the best movie every year in my opinion

y ai know, warren miller is way more annoying than msp, but i feel like theyv been hated on for it enough. and poorboyz has the same formula every year, etc, but at least they progress the sport a bit (or a lot). In MSP movies, its all skiers with super similar style, even PK, who i was super stokedon, expecting him to have a super rediculous part (which, it was, but just kind of boring), didnt do any of his crazy innovative tweaked out grabs and shit.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!

we are not calling them the collective! mountain biking already has a collective.

never say that again.

Well, some people seem to think creativity is lacking with the other companies, but I really don't see that. I see why MSP would keep their formula the same if it makes them money, but as someone who has bought every MSP movie since Focused, they just haven't entertained me at all the last couple years. Push was good though, maybe just because the vibes at the premiere in whis were amazing for me though.

Mainstream media isn't creative. It's boring to some, but acceptable to most. Hence Warren Miller movies making money still. Hence MSP making money and boring movies now. Again, why the Idea crew made a more entertaining movie than MSP with almost no budget. This is why Voleurz, who make a free movie not making any money off of it, make up for the lack of budget with creativity and compare to some professional movies.

I see major differences between all the film companies, so I really don't see how they are all doing the exact same thing trying to imitate mack dawg movies. I see creativity in the other companies, something that I haven't seen in MSP really at all.

Not hating on MSP, but I really don't see why they're worth defending. Claim kinda sucked. Cookie cutter movies are only interesting for a while, in my opinion. 5 identical movies is too much for me.

and mountain bikings collective has put out 3 of the best bike movies ever produced, and some of the most progressive in terms of filming, editing and story lines ever produced.

he's not, he's just saying that MSP isn't horrible, which is the opposite of the opinion that the majority of NSers seem to have...

Seven sunny days was amazing. Why feel the need to hate? and there not the same year after year skiing has progressed so much in the past few years. how may pretzels are in the hit list or better yet how many doubles?

Dude you think MSP is slow and repetitive, yet you claim to like what Nimbus do.....There is nothing slower than hunting yeti, puts you to sleep.

MSP i feel documents the various types of skiers out there, Mark Abma is a skier alot of us could aspire to have a ski career like. Then you have your park guys and big mountain guys......I believe they show skiing how we all see it.

I feel your are flat out wrong in asserting this claim.

Everyone sees skiing differently, and it means something different to everyone. Some people have similar views, but it's never exactly the same. This diversity is nice, as it allows things to be kept fresh instead of a large number of people all skiing and looking at skiing in the exact same way, which would get very boring indeed.

Watch trailers, read reviews, and use past experience to find what production companies fit best with how you identify with skiing. For some, MSP and Poorboyz make great movies. Some like Warren Miller. Some enjoy 4bi9. Are some of these flicks better than the others? Maybe. But why does it matter, except for you? If you don't like it, don't watch it, it's as simple as that.

Personally Nimbus and Level 1 are my consistent favorites. I love Nimbus for the relaxed vibe and the emphasis on slow, controlled spins on very strange axises. I really enjoy how Level 1 uses actual speed in their shooting, and the stoke and fun factors are way up there. Both companies portray the fun sides of skiing, and as that is what makes skiing worthwhile to me, I like their movies.

I respectfully ask you not to tell me how I see skiing, and ask that you not suggest that everyone has the same view of skiing. Thanks.

Id say MSPs movies are always pretty good, but as long as they just follow their forumula they will never be great. Ill probably go to the claim premier in seattle, but I definitely wont be buying it~

I don't think anyone is arguing that MSP doesn't have high production values, but all their movies are pretty much the same.

If this is true, I'll be pretty disappointed. Every ski film that premiered at IF3 brought something fresh to the table and took a step away from the same old formula.

In this months freeskier i think, mike wilson calls out MSP as representing him very shitty. I cannot agree more with him. everyone should try and get a read at that. He complains that MSP always showed him eating shit or bailing on a big one and they never show the next three shots of him stomping it, that this footage "was left on the cutting room floor". I think that its true and considering the insane shit he did on the jump D-Spong got wrecked on he should get alot better seggies than that. Now i haven't seen claim so i have nothing to say on that issue, i just feel that mike wilson has the right to call them out cause if i where him i'd feel more than cheated as well.

the collective = ROAM.

i would embed the whole movie but its not fun when there are like ten videos in one post.

you can't really call it shit my friend.

MSP consistantly sells more vids than anyone else on the market so to tell you the truth, they're fucking doing something right. if they were so "far behind" as everyone says they are, would their sponsors be coughing up hundreds of thousands of dollars so they can make a film? probably not.

you can criticize their style of filming all you want but that's what the people want, it's what they'll pay for and at the end of the day, it's all about the bottom line and they've got it down to a "T".

you all say snowboarding films are "ahead". again i will reiterate the question that's been played to death, "why do you need to be like snowboarders?" if you want to be the same as snowboarders, go pick up a snwoboard.

wow, sorry hating on the collective is actually not possible at all the way physics work in this current universe. thanks for trying

um, off topic to thread title? maybe, but guess what the discussion meandered over to the name collective and its collective awesomeness.

and besides, i know the good folks at MSP dig a sick mtb movie anyways.

That was in Powder. But don't believe everything you read just because someone says it. Mike's an amazing skier, but when he's in front of a camera, he goes for way too many things that just can't be stomped. Did you see his Push segment? It was ridiculous. But it wasn't "selective editing" as Wilson put it. What you see is what Wilson did. He's easily got the skills to put in a decent standard segment, Mike's not a standard individual. He ticks in a different way and he wants the holy shit shots. Don't fault MSP for showing Mike being himself. It's still insane footage, and if it between that and not being in the movie at all because you've only got 4 stomps, what do you choose?

not being in the movie...who the hell wants a segment full of crashes, even if it is all gnarly shit? it's still just eating shit.

I liked Push and Seven Sunny days.....i generally like MSP....tho i did not really like The Hit List....but overall i like MSP....but then again thats me, and i know not everyone does and thats ok too.....but why hate? there is enough hate in the world already....

If you think they are "behind the times" you are out of your mind. Nominated for 4 emmys in the past 2 years, name me some other movie companies that can boast about that. Which in turn puts ski movies in the eyes of a lot of other people who otherwise could give two shits about them. Personally i think thats a pretty progressive move

good point, kinda like when your mom tells you every one is "special", if everyone is special that all makes us the same

I will keep buying MSP movies just based on the fact that they make me happy and everyone they film with seem really awesome. Stoke Factor

The thing about just about every one of Wilson's shots in Push is that he took everything to his feet--but they were essentially beyond stompable. So it showed he had the ability to pull off ridiculous things and put him in the position of landing.

And tell me that if you did a double back off an 80' cliff and practically stomped (but rolled once) you wouldn't want to see it on a big screen in front of a thousand people. Or a perfect misty 5 mute off a 30' cliff right to his feet with just too flat a landing. Who does misty 5s of 30' cliffs? Nobody. Or a triple back that he takes to his feet and punch fronts and then skis away.

It was Wilson who wanted to get those shots, not MSP. Had it all hit the cutting room floor, he would have been pissed at that, too.

seven sunny days is such a sweet flick!! probably one of the best ski movies ever

and focus was the first ski movie I've seen and was totally mind blowing when I saw it

I like MSP. They are kind of the same but I will keep buying their movies. All of the skiing is sick and they know how to get the shot. I like their movies much more than rage and plehouse 4bi9 etc. They are professionals who know what they're doing. Seven Sunny Days: Mark Abma's segment killed. Schillers seg was a freakin sweet jib fest. I liked rubens and bushfields awesome music and they were throwing down like no tomorrow. Dougles' helmet cam was gnar and gets me pumped when I watch it. Eric Hjor, CR, Jon, and Bralorne where all solid segments and the editing for Jon's was A+. Whistler Jump session was mind blowing.

So yeah I don't see why people complain but whatever, I respect their opinion and not everyone likes the same stuff. If you don't like it buy Hunting Yeti or something else. They're not gonna change cause you bitched about it.

Im a fan of MSP. I only like rage better than them. I feel like both thoes companies mix it up more than just urban after urban after urban *cough* level 1 *cough*.

I don't know why this kind of topic always gets me fired up. Every thread like this could simply be ended with: People have different tastes. Period. That's why its good there is variety out there.
