MS Open

if by ms you mean mount snow then I will tell you what happend

The judging was done by ussa judges, spinning both ways did not count, and it was completely fucked

I dont remember who got first... Giray got third thats all I remember

I am sure many people will post and elloborate on all the people that got robbed

i forget who came in first but logan was second and giray was third, the park is soooo dope now though

THe setup was super sick,. ha scary for me but,..everyone was killing it. I hear they are leaving it up for the week but toned down.

website says it's open to the public tomorrow, and i talked to a park ranger and he said they are fixing the rainbow lip and thats about it. the're keepin it up, full throttle.

shea, martini, joss christenson, and max peters especially got robbed. although logan and giray killed it for sure.

To be honest, everyone was skiing sooo good today, I would have hated to have been a judge. Everyone killed it and by everyone I mean girls included. Keri Herman went bigger than some of the guys, landing steezy corked 5's at the bottom of the tranny. Look for the story tomorrow or Tuesday with some killer photos!

Again, to anyone that participated in the event today, jesus h. christ (it's easter) that was impressive. Great park too!

Course & Format & Event were sick but even though everyone skied rediculous and it must have been hard, the judging still blew dick. Shea Flynn = SOOOOO ROBBBED.

ok, course=good, judging=suck, we've gotten that far. can some one elaborate a little more, we've all read competition recaps before on this site i'm sure. thanks

sickest comp ever. Totally built for the riders.

As of judging, i guess for this comp they wanted to test the fis judges themselves, rather than mixing them in like at the other comps. Hibbert and some other guys agreed that the juding was a lil funky, some of it was def debatable, especially rail scoring........................but hey im happy. i had i right 9, left cork 9, and sw cork 10 in my run so i think rightside played a factor for some...

cam has a big cock.

i heard the jumps were HUGE and everyone went big. anyone know what happen with the kid that landed on his head in practice the other day?

really? i thought this sport was at the point where judging was getting pretty consistent. sad to see.

ussa is whack. hopefully this organization has no further involvement in this sport.

first of all if you were in the comp congrats even if you didn't podium because you put on a show for the tons of people watching the event...

stoked you all liked the park as we worked incredibly hard last week in crap to make it flow well as well as amp you guys up..

All of the competitors in the slopestyle yesterday killed it and I wouldn't have liked to be a judge. I did watch from atop the tower and that was the best view for sure

Just one note on the judging. The FIS judging was a bit different but the rational behind it is to push feestyle skiing towards an Olympic event in the future and FIS has to be involved with that push. It does seem to be a more technical style of judging as opposed to events we host already and have our own judges like the MMH. Judges were USSA apart of the Revolution tour.

Either way guys thanks for coming out if you were there. The park will remain the same through the rest of the season so enjoy.

Fisher

You guys killed it Greg!

Seriously, If anyone is interested, I might head over there on Tuesday to ride the park. It's by FAR the best jumps on the east right now. I'm writing my story right now (well I'm procrastinating on NS)!

I'm curious though, what do you guys want to hear about in the story? Tricks, parties, judging?

I'll write the majority of it and come back to this thread and see what you guys say and try to add accordingly!

i know one of the groomers and they said its all exactly the same except, the take-offs are a little flatter.  everyone hitting them knows that they were dope jumps with A-LOT of pop, so toned down should still be real sick.

mt. snow did a great job, course was great, the event was run very well, fun format free lunch, can't complain about the comp, however ussa continues to blow it huge their judges are embarrassing, and counterproductive to the sport. and they can't figure out why not kids want to participate in their comps. ussa needs to be put to sleep.

I tried to tell the kids what to go for. Chris Laker, props to you, you listened and your results proved it. Guys, pay attention, if you are competing to win, check out the judges and play their game, otherwise.....

sad but true. comps are a different kind of sport and there's many other factors other than your personal ability. However this doesn't mean we should accept this, unless you want to wear those pants with the knee caps, listen to coaches and do twisters all your life. Newschoolers is the loudest voice in this small community so if you speak up, the powers that be will listen, at some point... Good job everyone in this comp, it seemed to be really good for the skiers (sans judging) plus FREE LUNCH, mt snow still on top of the east coast comp scene, booyaa

Hell yea Giray, killing it!!!! I wouldn't be surprised if Joss and Max got ripped off because both of them slay so hard, but hey w/e, I wasn't there. i just can't wait to see pics and footy!!

that's a backwards mentality. To put it as nicely as possible, these judges just have no knowledge of or experience watching slopestyle. To play "their game" is an absolute crapshoot.

Sure, maybe USSA/FIS should judge pipe in an effort to move that towards the 2014 olympics... but slope is not headed for the olympics ANY time soon, so there is NO reason that those folks, who can't name many of the things they saw, should be judging slopestyle.

Most people in the top 10 deserved their spot 'cause they killed it -- respect. and yes, there will always be somebody complaining about judging... all I'm saying is that in something like VTO of the past, if you disagreed with scoring, then oh well, 'cause those judges know their shit. a matter of taste or opinion. this is a way different scenario.

and btw... everything else about the event was outstanding -- course, organizers, format, venue, maintenance, flow of event... impressive.

Lots of thanks and props to the crew at Mount Snow (Greg Fisher, Elia and the park crew, and anyone else from there involved in the event.) They stepped it up huge! The MASSIVE improvement to the park in a weeks time plus the amazing atmosphere made it so much fun. Thank god they could pick it up where both Stratton and Okemo lacked last year.

Pipe was cool. Slope was awesome. Girls are stepping it up and there was some amazing style from the guys. I'm looking at a shot of Parker's flip right now, it'll be in the article that should be posted later today.

such a good point. i'd hate to see the vibe of the event get overshadowed by some sketchy judging. i had so much fun competing all day and everything ran super smooth. it was probably the most fun event i've been to in my opinion.

i beg to differ, the us open course will be open at stratton next weekend and the jumps are rediculous,3rd hit is a sold 65-70ft step over, probably a good 80 to the sweet spot, its one of the nicest jumps i have ever seen on the east, but i havent seen mt snows yet, so i guess my opinion is pretty bad ha

You know that for a fact? That they have no experience with judging skiers in slopestyle?

It's not a crap shoot, I watched and I think I did pretty well with placing the runs, now why is that?

Most every kid I know that goes to these comps, goes to have fun, hang out with friends, maybe learn some new tricks, watch what the other kids are doing, cheer for their friends and try to throw down to impress their friends first, to place or win, second, correct?

If you are going to one of these events to try and place your best, doesn't it make sense to find out what the judges are looking for and what they are not? Otherwise why go?

Someone in the know correct me if I am wrong here. They judged on Amplitude, difficulty, overall impression, cleanliness of the trick. Go big and deep with a switched ,spinning, grabbed, landed clean and it scores well. Big Floaty stylish rodeo 5's don't score as well but are a crowd pleaser.

The ironic part of this is that those who were "robbed" are more than capable of doing the spinny things all one direction, but don't feel they are as "sick" as a trick. I wonder, if they had a better idea of what the judges were looking for, would they have still thrown the same run?

Don't get me wrong in all of this, I love the stylish tricks more so than 9's and 10's which are too fast for me to even see what they are doing in the air. I wouldn't have wanted to be a judge in that event. Everyone was looking so good.

My point is, In My Opinion - if you are going to a comp to win, then pay attention to what the judges want to see, don't complain later. For example: sort of jokingly.... Old guys in bibs= USSA regimented all tech, little style - Scruffy young guys with pants down low = style, xtra points for XXXL, double points if 6 or more inches of your boxers show :o)

peace

While the judging could have been better, I think everyone that participated can agree that it was one of the best events that the east coast has ever seen. I was proud as hell to be a part of it and can't wait to come back next year.

LOL good one! When was the last time a comp didn't have a thousand kids on here bitching about how so and so got robbed, and the judging sucked.

It doesn't matter if it is USSA, or FIS, or snowboarders, or Josh Loubek and the ex-pro skier crew, or the three judges from the American Dodgeball Association of America, there is NEVER a happy consensus on the judging.

So actually, I guess you're right, it is getting pretty consistent: because no matter what, we can consistently expect kids to cry about judging....

mrmarks is right on. i dont want my sport to degrade to the level of bowing down to wacked judging as mogul skiing has.

he grabbed behind his binding so i guess its a tail grab.

LAME. I hope USSA doesn't have anything to do with comps like this. Were the other two Freeski Opens judged by them also? I would have though a double flip was illegal in a USSA comp.

Relatively speaking? NO. No experience. I have stood by a judges' stand at a USSA comp this year and heard FIS level judges talk about the "360's on and off of rails" that kids were throwing.

The debate we're having is less about the MSO and more about USSA not being as up to speed as they'd like to think they are in the realm of judging slope.

Everyone in this forum, or on NS for that matter, watches probably 10-50 minutes of freeskiing video DAILY, nevermind the actual skiing they are doing and watching. To judge anything, you need incredible mileage of WATCHING to notice subtleties and have the cred to say that you know what you're doing.

I have actually been to a USSA judging clinic, where you learn to judge aerials, moguls, and pipe. I would never DREAM of trying to judge aerials bec. after watching a trick I'm like "wait, what the fuck was that?" Sure, these FIS guys have watched some video and maybe judged 8-10 comps before. But I think they're still at the "wait, what the fuck was that? that was cool..." stage.

So sure, they get it right sometimes, but I bet there's a better way out there. In the hopes of being constructive on NS, I would even be so bold as to say USSA's not hopeless in judging... they just need WAY more experience, WAYYY more video, and the respect for freeride to put in the TIME to learn subtleties in such a fast progressing sport, instead of just ASSuming that FIS=everything and that people should play THEIR criteria game.

Yes the USSA judging system needs help. One of the only ways to do it though is to get young adults like us who know what these kids are doping to become certified judges. It's a really easy certification, and you get to ski stay and eat free at wherever your judging. My advice if you want it to change, be proactive and get involved. Theres simply just not enough judges out there. It's not uncommon for someone to be pulled out of the crowd to judge.

mrmarks is correct eventhough your response is well written.... and by the way i believe there was a "stylish rodeo 5" in the winning run, hmm..... go read a book leave us alone

Here's some more from the comp.
