Mr Morale and the Big Steppers thread

What are people’s thoughts on Kendrick’s new album? I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed reviews. I personally thought half of it was bad after the first listen but the album started to grow on me.

I’m about 4 listens in and this shit slaps, hopefully people give it a chance because its waaaaay better than my initial thoughts were.

Thoughts? Favourite songs?

Will start by saying Kendrick is my favorite and topping Damn was going to be hard as hell. Even so, I was pretty disappointed on my first listen. I also didn’t like TPAB as much as Damn or GKMC so my buddies tell me it makes sense I don’t feel this one as much.

Im on the second run through now and N95 is actually hard AF. Picking Sampha for a feature was refreshing as hell too.

Pretty disappointed tbh. I gave it a few listens and some of the softer songs just sound boring to me, but i really only like the harder kendrick stuff and often listen to hard rock and metal.

United in grief, n95, and count me out are the best imo

That makes sense. I loved TPAB and GKMC so I’ve enjoyed Mr Morale more than Damn.

I’ve seen a lot of opinions like yours. I think GKMC is my favorite followed by a close tie between Damn and Section 80. Then TPAB and this latest one. Bottom line he’s the best rapper alive lol

I'm a production/musicality junkie so the songs with the more monotone sonic profiles don't work on me, but there were a couple songs I enjoyed. Will probably be one of those things where certain ones will grow on me over time.

Not bad, didn't blow me out of the water either

It won’t top damn or good kid but regardless it was still a pretty good album, worlds better than anything Drake dropped since Scorpion

I like it better than damn, but it still can't beat GKMC or TPAB. Tons of relisten value

Listened to it once so far from front to back. Tbf I might not have been fully paying attention but it didn’t really do much for me on first listen

Honestly same, I only got into it after the second and third listens.

rumor is this is a 2 part album. Father Time and Rich Spirit hit different tho man my goodness

Love both of those tracks. Pretty sure this album is a 2 part, as in the first and second halves

N95, Father Time, Rich Spirit, the track about his trans uncle, and the last track were all great. None of the other tracks really made an impression on me.

The therapy/mental health theme in the album wasn’t that interesting, heard it all ad nauseum in the last few years. Not so much in rap though, so I guess it’s at least somewhat fresh there?

Every time he drops an album I’m like oh I should try to get into this. It’s like I know it’s good I just can’t get into it. Props to him just not my jam- it just is irritating because I always loved weird hip hop, jazz etc he just doesn’t do it for me.

that sucks, not even to pimp a butterfly?

Don’t want to say it but I like Damn a lot better. You can put on that album on whenever and it’s great, and there’s still a lot of substance to it.

Steppers is good but it’s too much of an “in the mood” kind of listen barring a few standout tracks - mainly N95, Rich Spirit, and Count Me Out. Damn is 8/10, Steppers is 7/10.

Seems like people who love damn don’t like mr morale and people who preferred Kendricks older albums love mr morale. Probably something to do with the lack of catchy songs whereas Damn is more of a hiphop/pop thing

people need to listen to the album fully though at least five times to realize its communicating a story of Kendrick coming out of the closet cause every song is gay

You were totally right, I didn't pay attention to the track numbers until after you mentioned it. I wish there was more actual songs tho and none of the silly filler stuff with Kodak. Its kind of annoying haha
