I am lookin for a mp3 player to use while i ski and what not. I don't wanna drop alot on an ipod when i am not going to need all of that memory. what should i get?

Yeah, I thought 5Gb would be more than I'd ever need. Now I have 14Gb of mp3s (and growing) plus a few Gb of photos and files on mine. Once you're able to carry around huge volumes of music you won't regret getting something with a lot of space on it.

As for which model to go for, anyone with an iPod will say go for that, anyone with something else will say go for that. The bottom line is they all do pretty much the same thing so go for whatever you can get a good deal on. I use a 40Gb Creative Nomad Zen Xtra and I have no complaints at all. The size is slightly bigger than an iPod but it was so much cheaper that it makes no difference at all. The computer interface is pretty shit, but it's still easy and usable. I've used iPods and iRivers too and those are awesome too. You'll be happy with any of those 3 I'm sure.

 
for skiing i got the rio cali 256. it doesn't have nearly as much storage as an ipod, but it is tough as hell and way lighter. you can get up to 512 mb of additional storage in a SD card.

get a nomad zen xtra. 20 gb and half the cost of a 40 gb i pod

and it is sooooooooooooooo nice

Rio just came out with the Carbon, or they just announced it rather. It will be selling for 250,, so you can probably find it for less, and its got 5GB compared to the Apple iPod Mini. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I ended up with a rio cali 256 works wonders. and alot smaller and less fragile than my sony palm pilot

get one of the creative zen extra, the 30g and 40g are under 300 and they hold up great, i beat the living shit out of the old 20g version and worked just fine.

i just got my 15 gig dell jukebox today...... it rocks.....

supposedly it's tough as nails too, but i'm going to try and not beat the $h!t out of it.

Try an Ipod. I know that apple sucks but the ipod isnt too bad. It works awesome when skiing and i have taken some pretty bad falls and nothing happened didn't even skip.

i have an i rock that can have up to 256 mb its cool because i got it for like $70 wicked light and durable also.

I've used both iPOD 10GB and Creative Muvo² 4GB.

Sure, the iPod has more storage room, but its 'a lot' bigger than Muvo. Half the size, half the capacity roughly.

Sound quality is better in MuVo than in the iPOD which I listened both with same headphones.

 
that's just stupid. how can you compare that? did you listen to the same song with the same compression on both players? why won't people stop hating on iPods???

i have a 15gb 3rd generation ipod. i got it off ebay for $200 so it was pretty cheap. get an ipod for sure.

you can actually find the 3rd generation ipods on ebay cheaper than the ipod mini's just becasue the ipod mini's are newer and theres a 4th generation ipod

i got a rio nitrus 1.5gb off ebay couple weeks ago 100bucks retails for 200 (300-350) songs i think it's more than worth it... low price to

I've got the Creative Nomad Zen NX 30GB and it works great! It sounds good and can take a beating. I got mine at CompUSA with their 'protection plan' for a little extra $$$ and I could throw the thing against a wall if I wanted to and they'd just hand me a brand new one! Gotta love abusing warranties!

 
yeah, just buy a 3rd gen ipod of ebay for like 150. you will not regret it. dont get an irvier either. those things have a little juystick, and they break so fast. whatever you do, dont buy a minidisk player, and get something with a hrd drive. you wont have a problem filling it up. trust me.

CNET.com has some really informative reviews on mp3 players. RIO Karma is my favorite player, but it is plagued by HD failures and pretty poor construction. And the Dell Jukebox looks like it could be really good, but I heard it also has HD problems and that *gasp* it can't play albums in order?!

you know... I was gonna get an mp3 player. but I won't. I don't need to keep it in my pocket. diskman with mp3 support are wicked. I got a new one for $90CDN and 2 burnt cd's carry 1.6GB of music. and you can scan by folder and it has a jog button so you can pick a song without changing it. good deal I say. so if you think that being able to keep it in yout pocket is worth $250, then go ahead, but I'm content.

Ugh, please no one get minidisc players. There is just no thought put into their construction at all, and they're just terrible. Getting a hard drive player is a much better deal.

isnt a rio cali have compact flash card expansion not SD? because i wanted one with SD because i have a 256 card and the cali wasnt compatible

get a cd player that can play mp3 cd's. YOu can stick a lot of songs on t3h cheap cd's
