Moving to Detroit Questions

Hey guys I'm 23 and moving to detroit by myself in september. I know nothing about the area and was wondering if anybody had suggestions on neighborhoods to look for apartments in. Looking for something in a nicer area, especially for young people (preferrably close to dearborn where ill be working).

Also more importantly, where should i ski?? Im from ohio so im not unfamiliar with midwest skiing but im just looking for a place thats relatively close with a good park where i can get some rail laps in after work days. thanks for any advice in advance!

Wanna smoke dope?

Try looking around like ferndale. It's a sweet area for young people. I know you can find some decently cheap places. But most places are pretty expensive

Ayo,

I personally would never recommend Ferndale to anyone, unless of course you were gay. It is like the gay capital of Michigan. Not kidding, it might be a lot of young people, but i would never live there. Its also know as "Fagdale."

Now for my #1 recommendation. The by far tightest place to live for 22-30 year olds is Royal Oak. It has a really awesome downtown with a lot of young people and a ton of bars/restaurants. The night life is pretty unreal. Lots of hot girls 22-30 as well. It may be 20 minutes from Dearborn, but its well worth the drive. Its also really close to the freeways, you could just hop right on and zip over to work. I would start looking into apartments there.

As far as skiing, aghh the closest place will probably be pine knob. They have the best park in Southeast Michigan, other than that you are gonna wana go up north.

If you have any questions about anything, I am local and would be more than happy to help out. Feel free to PM me or reply here.

Where are you working?

Ill be working as an engineer for Ford. And I will look into royal oak it sounds like what I am looking for. Thanks for the advice man, and maybe I will see you on the hill next winter, I will also be in need of some skiing buddies

Right on, yeah check out Royal Oak for sure. Always an upbeat, fun, and good vibe there, especially for your age.

And yeah skiing buddies no problem. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I went thru this exact situation 5 years ago when I moved up here. (Auto engineer too) I've been living in Northville since I got up here and went thru a lot of heartburn about where to move to. Royal Oak is definitely the hot spot for our age, 20s and early 30s, and there is usually a lot going on. Rent can be pretty steep, but there are places to be found at a reasonable rate. If you can come up and look around in person it's the best. There are much better rental properties that may not be listed online. The only real downside will be the drive to Dearborn. Not difficult, but traffic can be a bitch. Consider looking at Plymouth. It's much closer to work and there is younger crowd around there too. Its smaller than RO, but a better location. The lakes are appealing, but generally near nothing else and very little social life. There is also Ann Arbor. Lots going on and younger crowd with UM right in town. The drive to Dearborn would be easier than RO.

Ain't nothin wrong with "fagdale" it's 5 minutes from royal oak and a $15 cab ride. Only reason I mention it is bc rent is probably half of what it is in royal oak. And you don't have to spend a shit ton of money to get into clubs like 5th ave. even tho the girls there are sexy as fuck. But if you a big ballet just go to Birmingham. Them rich hoes crave the D, if you can flaunt some money

haha yeah i guess, but really....you pay to get into 5th ave? I dont think ive ever paid to get in, occationally i have to toss $5 to get upstairs, but it depends who im with.

Royal Oaakkkkkkk. I've lived downtown(ish) for the past 3 years and it's great. Lots of bars and restaurants, young, fun people, and rent isn't too bad depending on where you want to be. Not sure what the other dude has against Ferndale though. Yeah, it's known as a gay community, but there are a ton of fun bars down there and rent is probably cheaper. I have a few friends with houses there and it's always a good time. Other than the occasional "gay night" at a bar or the local gay bars in general, you'd never know there was a large gay population there, not that it should matter anyway. Birmingham is nice too, but will be significantly more expensive and seems to be populated by guidos, d-bags, and Chaldean bros these days. It's good for a night out every once in a while.

+1 for Pine Knob, live 4 mins away lil biased but it really is great. And ya ferndale is homo, RO if your a city boy.

Ski at Pine Knob, Mt. Holly (Pine Knob and Mt. Holly are affiliated, duel season pass, etc.), or Alpine Valley.

Ferndale, Royal Oak, or Berkley

Regarding the gays in Ferndale subject, what bars are you guys going to where it's honestly making you that uncomfortable? I've never noticed much more in ferndale than in royal oak...

Royal oak is the way to go. If are you looking for cheaper head to oak park. Next to royal oak but still pretty close. I am also an engineer at ford. I have been skiing Alpine valley but i have only been here 1 year and didnt have all my shit when it snowed the first time. If you want to be hipster i would head to detroit but specifically in midtown. I got friends there and they love it.

If you got any specific ford questions just let me know. And good luck with the move.
