A buddy and i are moving down to bend from spokane washington in november. Just lookin for some pros, cons, advice what ever ya got. If anyone knows of any cheap apartments that are closer to the mountain than in bend that would be great as well. Im pretty unfamiliar with the area.

+K to anything thats helpful.

pretty much your either in Town or Sun River... there really is nothing close to the mountain, its all forest service land I think and theres no on mountain lodging either

I can't believe no one has responded to this. tisk tisk. Westside Bestside. Basically, you want to live in Bend. Sun River...definitely not. Bend. The westside is dope, that's where I've lived while going to college the last three years at OSU Cascades on the COCC Campus. There are some pretty rad houses/townhouses right now since the market is down. Houses are stupidly cheap. Check craigslist, right now is a somewhat hard cause uni is starting and houses are filling up, but hurry up and check out craigslist. there are a lot of private owners in Bend that rent for a supplemental income. Also check http://www.austinpropertymanagement.net/, don't rent from Bend Prop Mgmt! Some of the sickest houses I've lived in were in Bend and they were cheap!
Make sure to tap into Skjersaa's and get to know the crew. Bachy is sick, should be a rad season!

Dunno my parents have a house by the hospital.. its pretty nice and even being on the east side, its not bad taking the bypass to get on to the highway to Bachelor

trust me, living on the east side of bend by the hospital was the worst six months of my life. Don't get fooled by cheap rent at newly remodeled apartments over there. the west side is definately the best side. i got a home with a backyard for $400 right close to the river. it's heaven.

I fail to see how this is true considering bend is like 3 miles wide... everything is close, and It's all about where your friends live

actually bend is over 7 miles wide. from my experience about 1% of my friends live on the Eastside. from my place on the Westside I can walk to to multiple grocery stores, bars, restaurants, downtown, Drake Park, the college, ski shops, friends houses, and more. out of my house i can hop on multiple mt. bike trails. from the Eastside, especially by the hospital, you can walk over a mile to Safeway and a few restaurants, one bar, and thats about it. trust me, the Eastside sucks for a new arrival to bend....you really can't do shit on foot and if you bike or drive, you'll be coming to the Westside. remember, Bend is almost 100,000 people, its not that small anymore, especially on the sprawling sub division Eastside. its like trying to sell the East Coast skiing to the people of the West Coast.

lol dude... I live in Portland and spend my weekends in bend during the winter so its not a big deal for me to be close to anything, I just ski by day and sleep by night. I cant believe we're arguing about what neighborhood to live in. Bend is sick regardless.
my advice is to move there get a month to month, spend the time to find a sick spot to move into with friends and then do it. Problem solved.
It was the same thing when I used to live in bozeman MT half of us lived on the south side of town and then others lived down town close to everything and then the rest lived out in th new developments north of town. Just depends on what you want/need/can afford.

hey guys, thanks for the posts. thought this thread kinda died a bit ago. but i guess its been gettin busy. so, what im takin from this... definitely live on the west side of town since commuting is much easier, and get in with the locs. As of right now, im just lookin for a low month to month rent. Townhouse or apartment would be ideal. Ive been all over cl, and called a few reality agencies down there with no cigar...

Doom, how the hell did you score a house for $400! damn...

Im also gonna be hunting for a part time job. Got any advice on local restaurants that would be good to work at? Or better yet and advice on night jobs that would leave the days open.

there are a ton of restaurants to work part time at. toomies, parilla, ten barrel, pizza mondo, cibellis, gregs, anthonys, the list runs deep on this topic. just get here and you'll figure it all out. i took a bus from portland and just started from scratch......

yepp. thats what ill be doin, startin from pretty much scratch. Thanks for the list of restaurants. Those will be the first places i go to. Looks like move in date is end of october.

gettin stoked! my buddy just left this weekend because he got a job down there. anyone wanna hook me up with one! haha. but yeaa, the west side of bend is the only place id wanna live down there. which might be hard because im not tryin to break the bank with rent...

I'd claim all over that. where's my map of breweries and my list of national champion beers from Bend when you need it... let's just have a mirror pond and talk about it? ha. and $400, man I guess sometimes you just get lucky. ps may potentially need roomate as of november. ill try and keep you posted if you are interested.

the brewery that has won the most medals in oregon.. is located in the quaint little town of BAKER oregon.. i bet you have never been there... barly browns is hands down the best beer in oregon.... the two main brewerys in bend. deschutes and cascadse lakes. are avarage beers. and jubale fuckin blows,, bland flat and not even good for hot dogs. 400$ what dat bout?

the only ones that make it out to Portland with any regularity. regardless the beer in bend is marked up as every god damn thing. i love to visit but i could never ever live there.maybe ill give ten barrel a go when im down there next. if what you say is true. if not i let you know.

i dunno... wheat ale double fermented and aged in white Chardonnay barrels for 6 months.? but i am a huge IPA Esb fan. and a good GOOD lager when its made right! yeah i guess in Oregon were all spoiled are weed is good and our beer is better and cheaper... like i just met some girls from Boston and every where i take them there like"this place is so cheap. and im like.. 375 for a pint.. thats spendy in my book.

ill pay it for sure.. the biggest rape is at the rose garden at blazer games. Whoah... 6 bucks for a plastic coors lite and 8 25 for a 20 oz micro... i always get thunder head which is at 6.9abv. but yeah funny thing.. at timberline a pint of the MHBC beer is 5 bucks you go down to charlies mtn veiw and its 3 50... Hmmmmm.

Dont get frustrated if you do not get a job. I applied to over 40 jobs and didnt get ONE. Shit was pretty lame. Also, when you do apply for jobs, dont go look for jobs that are available. Just go into every restaurant (assuming you still want to do that) and just drop off a resume if they are hiring or not. This town sucks for jobs. It had the second highest increase in unemployment in 2008 in the country! I believe its still up around 18%, so good luck, but Im sure you can find a part time job somewhere. I cant say I have tried lately. I just stick to my sketchy freelance jobs, hah.
Where did you end up getting a place at? You can find some decent rent on the east side. I found a 2 bedroom house for 600 a month with a HUGE garage (swear the thing was bigger then the house). It was kinda old but would have been worth it if i lived there. There are some over priced places, but there are also good places. Look near downtown too (near drake park). The houses are older, but that means you can get some deals. If you want help with it, let me know. I just moved back, so I just went through this process again.

Oh damn, thats a lot of applications! good thinking with droppin off resumes. ill def. have to do that.Currently have not found a place to live, my buddy is down in grants pass right now working. Will be moving in a month from now since i got a good job to stack up some money before i leave. But we were trying to stay away from the east side since everything is on the west, but i do realize that will be more denario. And by all means do we have heaps of money to throw down on a place. Downtown area would probably be the best, old places are good with me. just a place to sleep and eat. But yea, any help would be great since im way up here, and my buddy is stuck with cell service in one spot and cant leave the job for another month. But any help would be great man. im just not sure where to start and what to start asking from ya. I got no eyes or ears down there.

Damn, so I had a list of some good places to check out but my browser closed, hah.
Basically, it all depends on really what you are looking for and your price range. How much are you looking to spend a month? 400? 500? Your not going to get much lower then 400 with utilities. Also if you guys are looking not to party or something at your place or never really be loud I would look into apartments possibly. The only thing is the only decent apartments I know are strict on noise. I guess there are other apartments that dont care, but Ive only heard sketch things about them. For instance I live in a nice apartment for 500 (630 for two bedroom) a month that includes basic cable and internet (and a free hoodoo pass). Its good size and newly remodeled and I have a little deck, but I would get kicked out if I had a party in here. Well most likely would get in trouble, but Ive had 13 people here and somehow didnt get busted. If your someone like me and just wants quite and parties elsewhere, its nice and cheap, otherwise its not.
Here are some things I found that are houses near downtown, since I think thats what your looking for:http://bend.craigslist.org/apa/2005728852.html- Kinda pricey but a nicer home for that area.
http://bend.craigslist.org/apa/2004675884.html- Townhome but decent price. I have a friend that lives like 3 houses down from that and its in a legit area.

http://bend.craigslist.org/apa/2004504282.html- same area pretty much. Could be legit

http://bend.craigslist.org/apa/2003482871.html- would be legit if the other people in the duplex are chill

http://bend.craigslist.org/apa/2003495718.html

Basically, there is still a lot of good places out there. I just checked craigs list all the time and found some sick places (although i didnt move into any i found since I didnt have a roommate and only looked for like 2 days before i moved). I found craigslist nice because everyone posts on there and if its not posted on there, its most likely expensive as hell.
Just take a look around craigs list and if your not sure on where an address really is lemme know. Hit me up on email or FB something since im not on NS too often.Bentley@dosmedia.net
Peace.

prob look to spend anywhere from 350-400, looks like there might be three of us splitting rent in a 2br place since my buddys gal pal wants to move in as well. so a $800 2br would be very doable. In that case will be looking for a house since were the more rambunctious group. That first place looks damn nice, but $$$. The 2nd, 3rd, and 5th links you posted are exactly what were gonna be lookin for. Im def. gonna be following up with these people. Though it may be a bit early since were looking to make move in date roughly a month from now. Thanks for the help mate. ill add ya on fb, maybe we could kick it when i end up movin in. ill probably fly down in a week or two to check out the area while i can still use my sisters buddy passes. Again, thanks for the help. +k to you my kind sir.

That will make things even nicer. All of the houses down there I have been in have good size living rooms and kitchens too. They are pretty good sized two bedroom places for the most part, so three people wont be too bad. I would contact them whenever soon. I dont think too many people are looking to rent, but even if your moving in a month its nice to look at some places i guess. Hit me up on FB whenever. I should be the only one with the first name Bentley thats white, haha.

hahaha, alright i will man.My buddy is actually up in bend from grants pass lookin at places now. And ill be down next weekend.

Wordd... bring your skis. Got some snow up in the mountains with a lot more to come and it looks like it should stay pretty cool all week.
