moving out west

Me and my friends live near mount snow. we are graduating this year and we want

to move out west to like mammoth or mt hood or breck. the questions are-

Has anyone ever tried this straight out of high school, and not gone into serious debt?

if so how?, and

what mountains kick ass to live by?

i'm in the exact same position as you, after i graduate high school next year i'm moving west sometime in the fall. check some of the ski areas websites and look for employment, you can always get jobs at the resort (liftie)... but i was kind of wondering about the debt situation myself, i thought that maybe if you move out there before the season starts you could get a little money saved up, but then again you could probably just do that at home...

move out there in late summer and save up a lot of money? is it really expensive to stay there? or get a job wehre they give you a pass or something maybe

Just live and work at the mountain. Places like mammoth have like apartments for their employes to stay in. You get a pass if you work like 10 or 20 hours a week I think. If you live at the mountain you won't use to much gas plus most of your food can be purchased at a discounted rate.

my bro just got a job working to Mammoth. He's going to be apart of the Undbound park crew! i'm have temped to look for a job out there myself!

ya, i'm almost certine that I'll be out in Whistler next year. I'll be going out there for the summer (hey Will - we gotta orginize that shit), and if I can get a good job and a place to stay I'll be staying for the fall, and eventually get a job for the hill in the winter.

I think that the best way is to get a food job. It pays way better than working for the mountain - at least in Breckenridge. Be prepared for high rents, and living with a bunch of people. My friends all either pay 700 a month or live with 6-8 people. Don't try showing up in December or January either. Try to move in the summer - there are less jobs then, but you will end up saving time and money by meeting people to live with and getting into a good house. People will jack their rent up as it get to be about November or January. Good luck.

thats pretty steep, how much would you say you earn in a month there?

'This girl had the WHOLE PACKAGE dude!!'

'The chick had a cock???'

Ya, thats what I'm doing, but after I graduate I'm taking a year off to make tons of dough, then heading out for the winter to whistler.

Probably gonna rent something aroound the Pemberton/Whistler area, but there is no chance I'm working while I'm out there. I'm working the summers and taking the winters off.

Working while yer trying to ski a ton would suck. Oh ya, also if ya rent with someone else it helps with the money alot, say your renting for $500 a month, if ya split that up between a few people its relatively cheap.

Later.

I dont really know about gettin into debt cause I'm only 14...but like Breck is the shit...I'd come to CO, its awesome...all together the west is awesome but Co is especially phatt

Why do you guys say, 'I have to take a shit' when you just leave it there?' JF learning english

i totally agree with nma, get a job working in akitchen at night, tyou can ride all day every day unlike working for the hill, also anyone i know who worked for the hills got screwed one way or another, but that was in canada

i live in colrado and i ride whistler every summer and next year i am taking a year off and out of anywhere i rode i would wanna be just right here, i am gonna move up to breck and sink into meadrocracy it will rock

yeah, I am also taking a year off. i have seen deals like at alta where you work at night, and they give you a free pass and housing I am pretty sure, check out their website

if your gonna move to a mountain, go to one that you can ski all year round that has a glacier or something. cuase during the summer u'll be bored. go to a big one that has everything.

I guess I could save this bump, because I don't see why you bumped it.

I'm curious as to how many of the people in this thread actually moved out west after highschool, how many of them are still out west, and what they are doing now.

I was in grade 11 when this thread was made. I ended up spending a year in Ontario after high school, working at the local hill a bit in the winter and banking coin all summer. Moved out in early July '03 and haven't looked back.

This is my 10th year living in BC, something tells me I'll die here.

I had a pact with 2 highschool best friends that we'd move to Whistler after we graduated for the summer. It was coming to the end of December, and my friends were already telling me they weren't going to have enough money to do it. I called them bitches.

After New Years I got expelled from highschool for developing naughty photos of drugs, alcohol, and nudes in the photolab that started getting passed around class & seized.

I said fuck everyone I'm moving to Whistler, & I did. I was 18, 1 credit short of graduating school. Got a job in a deli without even a resume my 2nd day in town. Took 2 weeks to find my first place which mid-january is pretty good.

If you're working, and skiing you can get by. You're never going to put any really money in the bank working in a ski town, but I'd highly recommend if you don't have plans for college or Uni, to go party hard for a few years, then buckle down in school once you've tried all the bullshit, and it runs it's course. Just don't get hooked on the drugs, and enjoy it as long as you're enjoying it.
