Moving out west for college

Im a senior this year and plan on moving out to west for college. thinking westminster in SLC. Was already looking into and randomly started talking to this guy today about it who is a student and he said nothing but good things.

What's it like moving so far away from home by yourself?

Any thing I should consider before making the commitment?

How did you guys do on making friends when you dont know anyone?

Anyone currently a student there?

Same shit. Nothing changes

No

Fuck people. Who needs friends?

No

go to the best school you can afford. Not where you'll be able to ski the most over 4 years and be 150k in debt for the 30 years after that...

Liberating. How much it will cost and what kind of jobs are available.

I went to the bars by myself and made friends, or made friends with kids in my classes.

No.

well im either going for computer sciences or marketing so pretty much every school offers that so why not find a place close to skiing? i understand what you mean thou

Nah, play it right and you don't have to graduate with a dumb amount of debt. And to OP, keep your options, I wanted Boulder but ended up in upstate NY because the financial aid was much better & the name on the degree a bit better as well.

I can graduate w minimal debt and then either move out west after graduation or take epic trips because I can afford it..

Nothing changes

Know what you like

Easy to make friends just be yourself

No

Coming from a kid moving from Reno to Miami

Most of the USA live on the east coast. Most people who ski would rather be on the west coast.

To OP- college is a good chance to move somewhere new and make friends. But think it through going to college somewhere you plan to live after college is always a good idea. You will have friends around and your degree will look better with networking options.

Utah has great skiing but I wouldn't want to live there. However if I had went to college there and had a ton of friends my opinion on the place would clearly be different. If thats where you want to live do it.

you should probably go to the U then. Big things happening in the business school. And some of the best marketing professors in the game.

Cool! Another person moving out west to ski?! We definitely don't have enough of those already...

god forbid we move away from the hills of ice we ski on to enjoy our sport a little more, fuck off

Different for everyone, but it wouldn't be unusual to get a little homesick at first

probably

be nice to people? give them food, no matter where you go, people gotta eat

fuck no

Best post i've seen in a while.

Moving away is easy especially when you can ski.

Skiing will lead to friends

doesnt matter where you can, as long as its not the state school that half your class is going to. go someone new with people you dont know. be open and meet new people. I went to a school where i knew no one and it was such a good choice and it made me realize alot of the kids that i knew kind of sucked

That's what I was thinking. Right now I live in the middle of no where iowa. Not really a fun place to be a skier. None of my friends ride, I think I would fit in so much better out in a ski town

/startlecture Man you have the rest of your life to ski. College is a time you need to be thinking about getting into a career and a job that you enjoy and won't make you miserable for either the rest of your life or until you pay off your debt. Having fun in college is important, but your sport shouldn't be the number 1 factor in where you go to school unless you're seriously going into the NBA/NFL /endlecture

It all depends on your professional goals. If you are looking to be recruited into a fortune 500 company and eventually go into upper management and own a mountain condo at Vail you're probably going to want to end up in California or stay on the east coast and try to get into either a private school like Colgate or Tufts, an Ivy league school, or an "esteemed" school in a city like Boston, Miami, NYC etc. to get connections with rich kids and stellar internships.

If you're thinking about going more grassroots and working with/in a startup business i've heard wonderful things about Denver, California, SLC.

I know you're talking west coast but my undergrad college was *the* east coast destination for skiers/snowboarders. For Marketing/Computer Science I would absolutely advise against going to UVM in Vermont. There simply aren't the internships and support you need to start a great career, and jobs are scarce in the state.

There are obviously exceptions to what I just said, its not impossible to be successful somewhere that has a scarcity in internships but I think you maximize your chances of leaping strait out of the gate when you graduate college if you position yourself right.

This post is incredibly legitimate. And it figures this young man is so smart, he's from VT. Or a fan of virginia tech. Either way, hit the nail on the head.
