Movin West

I currently live in Michigan and I am sick of this shit. I have been eyeing up the big move to Breckenridge or Silverthorne and wanna get some input from the locals. I've looked around for apartments and jobs and have somewhat of a plan but I'm not totally sure yet. Anyone know of good places to live/work around the Breck area? I'm looking for some sort of construction job because it lines up with my degree but I just need something to pay the bills lol. Also open to roommates because 1 room apartments are fuckin expensive.

I put an add out for remodeling in trade for room for rent once and it worked out great, lived for free and fixed stuff whenever I felt like it. Just thought I'd throw this out there.

I've considered moving to michigan from out west. [tag=225125]@Lonely[/tag] has been trying to convince me and I've been eyeing the midwest for a minute.

Summit is a shitshow. It's expensive to live and it's fucking crowded. It has it's perks though. There are some great hikes around, dope places to ski, CO has some good skateparks. Breck, Frisco, and Silverthorne are right there. Leadville, and Edwards are a short drive.

The only way to get a 1 br without selling a kidney is getting into new low income housing or getting super fucking lucky. Personally I don't even entertain the thought of ever moving to summit, but everyone is different. One of my best friends has lived there for 6 years and I'll go stay with him and cause some trouble from time to time.

As far as work, check indeed etc. Probably not a bad idea to line up a job before you move. Then at least if you hate the job you can tough it out till you find something better and be able to pay rent and stuff.

Summit can be west denver on the weekends. It is what it is. Summit, tahoe, etc have their perks, but they aren't some uncharted land of possibilities hidden away in the mountains.

But yeah, housing is tough and roommates are generally a gamble. Good luck. I would say there's some nice shit out west and you can access places where you are way more remote in the mountains, you just gotta drive/hike a bit.

Devils advocate here but wouldn't it make sense to have a guaranteed job before moving to one of the most expensive places in Colorado? I'm not talking about a temporary or semi-permanent construction job, that is dependent on demand. I'm talking about a specified job for a company who is committed to keeping you for x amount of years with benefits. When you're a new employee, especially in times like these, you're the first to go when cuts happen.

Also imo, if you can't afford a 1br apt, you can't afford to live in the area. Afford doesn't mean you throw an entire paycheck into rent either. This is a problem everywhere though, and these landlords know they can charge bokoo bucks because young people will shell out 50% or more of their income (or have multiple people in a 1br) to live in a nice area or downtown location.

At the very least have a big chunk of savings for if shit goes south- at least 3 months of expenses. The drifter status of working oddball jobs can be very risky and a fast track to living out of your car.

That's the plan, I'm not going anywhere until I have a guaranteed source of income. I have a pretty large amount of savings so I could make a 1br apartment work, I'm just trying to see if there's anything better out there before I commit to one. I'm also not in the biggest rush in the world, I'd prefer to get out there within the next month or 2 but I'm also considering waiting until next fall so I have time to lay out a solid plan and build savings even more.

"The big move"

ahhh to be a stupid fucking teenager again.

Just trying to live life and do something cool with myself instead of sitting in a shitty dorm takin online classes in a state with not a flake of snow. Could this go bad and I end up not liking it? That's always a possibility and I'm prepared for it. Even if I do fuck it up and end up coming back to MI at least I can say I tried something new.

Most jobs in that area you can't really afford a 1br apartment. That's the way she goes these days. That's why even shitty jobs are paying like $15 an hour because you can't even live in a shack with 10 other people and buy groceries for much less than that.

Times is tough.

Only move here if you enjoy stupid direct ballot initiatives, wooks, stupid direct ballot initiatives involving wooks, and traffic. The i70 corridor is more beat than a back alley hooker. Aspen, Vail, and Breck are fuckin BLOWING IT. GET FUCKED.

I did the same thing when I was your age and moved to Breckenridge. The first thing I would do is lower your expectations and get ready be poor as fuck. Finding a job there is easy. Finding a place to live isn’t. I shared a 2 bedroom with 4 people (and my roommates had their coworkers that lived in their cars stay with them frequently) and went to local churches for free meals.

You know what I like about you? Nothing.

But it is nice knowing—as hateful and triggered and as deranged as I sometimes feel about the world, I see your posts and realize there’s somebody 10x more cynical out there in just about every aspect of life.

damn

Breckinridge and Silverthorne are solid choices. I have a couple buddies who have been doing construction under the table around Vail, I could ask if they’re expanding. Although by “under the table”, that also means you get paid more when they do so expect a check in a couple months, not bi-weekly

Fair warning, Scummit County is an easy place to spiral into a life of booze, drugs, debauchery, and homelessness.

You might have a better experience (and far better accommodations and roommates) staying in Avon, Minturn, Red Cliff, Leadville, Edwards, Eagle...

There's some pretty good job listings in the area right now on buildcolorado.com. Also, there's decent work to do at the Eagle airport.
