Movin to Oregon

So I thought I'd be a CO lifer given that I've spent my whole life here but I'm pretty over it and looking into a change of scenery.

I'm looking at Bend/working at Bachelor primarily, what is the scoop on living out there? How are the locs and what are some do's and dont's that may not be as obvious to ppl who didn't grow up there?

Dunno if ill ever get used to not pumping my own gas

you can pump your own gas now, no idea if gas stations are still keeping those employees or not anymore but last year in OR i pumped all of my own gas.

I got yelled at in Ashland for pumping my own. Might be a local decision.

The first time I went to Oregon in 2016, the way somebody explained it to me was that self-pumping was not allowed in towns of over a certain population level. I think I was told 30,000. Not sure about now though

they passed a law a few years ago that ended the mandatory pumping

Well first, the mayor [tag=189437]@DominatorJacques[/tag] must interview you and determine your fitness for duty if you wanna work at his palace.

I think both Oregon and Jerz are cooked on the gas thing. I get everyone is used to whatever but that's some garbage.

Oregon is sick though. Be carefull around portland and near the coast these days though. Getting sketchier. Had a few friends get their cars broken into and anothers car got stolen, only one actually in portland. Stolen truck was in sandy. Idk shit is dicey. I only go to bend once in a while but it seems more chill. Some good skateparks in the region too.

I didn't even know this was still a thing til I visited Oregon last year. I haven't seen a non self serve pump since 2001. I was so confused the first gas station I stopped at....so awkward.

It's funny because those are the 2 summer skiing spots. Jersey is easy enough though when visiting Big Snow, I just gas up last stop in PA before entering Jersey and it' s more than enough to last me until I'm headed back home

The gas station is closed now but about 5 years ago I stopped at one in Little Canada Minnesota with regular pumps but an attendant would come out and pump your gas.

I didn't know this happened at this station so as I was about to get out of the car I saw this guy that was sitting on a bench get up and quickly walked to my car. By the time he got to the pump I was out of the car and had my hand in my purse. I was freaked out and was ready to get back in and leave. He said he was pumping the gas and I said I got it. I don't need help. But he insisted. I told him he was not touching my card. So I did the card swipe, got back in, and awkwardly sat there watching the guy pump my gas. It felt so wierd just sitting there I didn't know what to do.

P sure it’s a decision that the individual station/ franchise owner makes. When I was kicking it around Portland I almost never saw employees pumping gas but when I was out by hood/ in the more rural parts of Oregon it was way more common.

Still find it so weird that having somebody fuel up your car for you is an option, if not mandatory, in America. It's either do it yourself or fuck off here in the UK.

Portland is a failed state. Stay tf away unless you like donating your belongings to the “less fortunate”. Hood River is pretty nice if you can afford it. Bend is California. Consider living on the Washington side of the gorge because you can dodge quite a bit of (((taxes))).

It rains for 11 months of the year and the one month it's sunny is a heat wave where the whole state catches on fire. Good to take vitamin d pills your first year

Thanks i actually am wondering how the weather there will affect my headspace, people have told me abt it. I live in a stupidly sunny state and am morbidly depressed but i actually really enjoy the part of winter where everything is cold and dead and grey so hopefully its all good

Is it humid in oregon? In the summer, like shitty north east humid where from like late May-Early September as soon as you walk outside your clothes stick to you? Or is it a dry heat in the summer and then foggy and gloomy and rainy in fall/winter/spring?

I'm moving to bend too. Live with us so our rent is cheaper

Do it! If you dont, you will always wonder what wouldve happened. Worst case, you go back to CO?

There are the super hardos and then there are some good people there. Go have fun, meet new people, experience new things. The gas pumping thing is weird at first but all they are doing is generating jobs. If you be polite they will let you pump your own gas and just remember to hide and lock your shit up.

Rentals in Bend are through the roof!

One must have a high paying job for sure.

I've been looking recently and tbh bend is about as expensive as any mid to large sized city anywhere else. Rent in general is just expensive.

Even places like Marquette, MI are in the ballpark of 900-1400 for a single bedroom.

Yea, it's frickin' sad. I remember when an average job could pay the rent. Times have changed.

I know some younger folks are probably doing okay..........but I do feel sorry for the youngers now.

Bend is a cool place. Lots to do. Just bring the $$$!

I live out of the city, and I love it here, 23 years now. I do miss having some serious curvy roads around where I live like I used to have back in the Santa Cruz costal mountains, but I'm dealing with it okay.

This road is close to where I live.

Yeah definitely sucks a bit. I work a good job that pays me well above minimum wage and includes bonuses, but the only way I can really swing this is by having a roommate lined up. Fortunately for now, I do. I could still afford not having a roommate, but then very little would be going into savings.

Sucks to have to choose between the two, but ya just gotta do what you can do. It's very annoying to see that every apartment or house for rent has gone up in price by 25-30% in the last year...when all that really changed is the apartment got a year more of wear and tear.

But if all things go well and I make it out there you and [tag=209753]@OregonDead[/tag] and I will have to rip bachelor this winter. Watching your vids has got me stoked

Hella yea man! As always, a quality home share person will make it all good!

I'm luck I have my Lovey to share with.

Since I’m front range but am currently in Oregon as I spend a lot of time there with family, my take:

They drive astonishingly too fucking slow.

Eat shit you lil weenie I've lived in CO my whole life watching ppl move in and blow my state out, trust me 1 homeless skier sleeping in a truck has a much more positive impact than 1 remote worker from california so just suck it up. I promise i'll leave a tip when i get a slice at whatever shitty pizza place u wash dishes at. AND I'll tip your mom when i c her at the strip club. Well maybe more than just the tip..

I'll be moving to Bend for a year...maybe two at most. Depends how the housing market looks in a year.

Any of you folks ski backcountry around Bend? It looks like Tumalo is the go to spot for shorter day trips. And the sisters/broken top for multi-day trips. Stoked to ski Bachelor this winter too. Looks like a fun mountain.

You got that right for skinning up. Ass wipe of CC trails, if that's a thing.

All good. Definitely looking to ski at least one of the sisters before I leave. Not used to the long approaches though. Most of the stuff around me is pretty much straight up and straight down. We don't have a ton of those long approaches that go for miles.
